The '''Department of Fun''' is dedicated to providing the [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia is a community|community]] of [[Wikipedia:Wikipedians|Wikipedians]], both [[Wikipedia:Guidance for younger editors|young]] and [[Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by number of edits|old]] editors, with things to make them stay at Wikipedia, indirectly improving the encyclopedia. Below, you can find a fun and simple game to play.
= Introduction =
This is a fun and simple game. It's in the [[Wikipedia:Sandbox|Sandbox]] - feel free to join in! It's a good place to practice making links to articles, and to start looking for [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random interesting articles] on [[Wikipedia]].

Please, if you have ideas for activities or competitions, do not hesitate to post them to the discussion page or join the Department of Fun. And above all, [[Wikipedia:Enjoy yourself|enjoy yourself]]!
== How to Play ==
By way of example, a game might start off with:
cat
. Then, the next person might add
cat, dog
. And after a few more rounds, we might get
cat, dog, pet, animal, forest, tree, ...

For those who are curious, the first game began on July 6, 2005. The beginning word was "free".
Simply, the game involves adding ''a single word'' to the list that is related to the previous one. Avoid repeating words, and keep the links tasteful! Clearly, as the game develops, one gets a pretty long list! If you're stuck for ideas, link to the last word in the list and add the first link that appears on that page as the next link. Thus [[Sebastian Junger]] would be followed by [[1962]], and [[Latin]] by [[ancient]].

==Introduction==
Try to update the word count each time you add a word. The official limit for the main game is 400 words.
This is a fun and simple game. It was originally a [[Wikipedia:Sandbox|Sandbox]] subpage and is part of the [[Wikipedia:Department of Fun|Department of Fun]] nowadays — feel free to join in! Why not? It's a good place to practice making links to articles and find interesting pages to edit on [[Wikipedia]]. We also welcome more players to join! You can help promote by adding the userbox below. At the bottom of the page is a template with links to other Word Association variations.

'''Userbox'''
Occasionally, it's good to have some ''branches'' that diverge the main game into several sections. The official limit for said branches is 80 words. Try not to make a branch when the main game is about to close down; that will only store your branch away in the archives. Please only branch when the word exists in the word list.

==How to play==
'''In spirit of the game, please only type one word consecutively.''' Then, another person can respond to your word, and the game continues!
Simply, the game involves adding ''a '''single''' word'' to the list that is related to the previous one. Edit the main game or branch section, add a word, enclose it in brackets, update the word count, and save the page. Also, try to avoid miscounting if possible - make sure there are 10 words in at each 10th word!

===An example===
= The game =
By way of example, a game might start off with:
cat
. Then, the next person might add
cat, dog
. And after a few more rounds, we might get
cat, dog, pet, animal, forest, tree, house, boat,
a [[Serbia|random country in Europe]], an [[Galaxy (British TV channel)|obscure British TV channel]], or even a [[Mel's Diner|fictional restaurant]]!

==Repeated words==
We are now on Game #8!
'''Avoid repeating words''', and '''keep the links tasteful!''' ''Please use only [[Help:Link#Wikilinks|blue links]] when associating.'' [[Wikipedia:Piped link|Piped links]] are acceptable in certain circumstances, such as when a word may have many ambiguities, like
<nowiki>[[Queen (band)|Queen]]</nowiki>
. Clearly, as the game develops, one gets a pretty long list! If you're stuck for ideas, link to the last word in the list and add the first link that appears on that page as the next link. Thus "[[Sebastian Junger]]" would be followed by "[[The Perfect Storm (book)|''The Perfect Storm'' (book)]]", and "[[Latin]]" by "[[Classical language]]".

''This is Game #37. The starting word, [[Herbert S. Duffy]], was selected by [[Special:Random]]''.
This is a fun derivative of word association that involves a bit more creativity. It is also a good way to start seeing how you make Tables on Wikipedia. And speaking of creativity, there are five variations to the game!

==Main game==
==How to Play==
Simply add your word to the grid, either going sideways or downwards. One word at a time please!

===#37: "Herbert S. Duffy" (main branch)===
* If you go sideways, your new word needs to associate with the word to the LEFT of it.
====Main branch:====
* If you go downwards, your word need to associate with the word ABOVE it.

== How to start a new series ==

Also, do not:
The Ultra Word Association has spawned a number of deviants. If you have an idea and are so bold you'd like to try to make it a series, use the following steps:
– Repeat words or links (but don't be a jerk if someone else does; delete it, but be polite about it! This is supposed to be fun!). If the duplicated word has remained long enough that 10 words have been added to it, leave it (deleting large sections of the game becomes disruptive).
– Post red links – use Show Preview before Save Page
– Create sub-branches – see below.
– Use naughty words

Branches may be started. However, only ONE branch is allowed for EVERY 100 WORDS, and NO MORE than 5 in total in the game. Therefore, branches are sparse. The 18th game went out of control with branches.
1. Use [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia_talk:Sandbox/Word_Association&section=29#Blank_Ultra_Template|This]
to make your table, making or deleting new rows and columns, and changing the background color to suit your series.

See the talk page for more discussion or to ask about these rules. -->
2. Come up with a name for it. Four of the deviants have an adjective followed by "word association" or "ultra word association": Fixed, Radial, Psychedelic, and Enigmatic; so following this trend might be a good idea.

====Branch four: Iran (Branch open)====
3. Provide a good description of how to play in the space above your table, emphasizing those aspects that might get confused easily.

==Radial ultra game: 'True Lover's Knot'==
{{User:Xhin/six}}
The rules are identical to the ultra game, except that the starting point begins in the centre of the box, and words expand out from the centre, associating to all the adjacent cells. Unless your word is in a straight line to the start word (i.e. it is in column D or row H) then it ''must'' be adjacent to two existing words.

==Reverse Radial Ultra game 'Airport'==
{{notelist}}
As the name sugguests this is the Radial Ultra game in reverse - you start from the four corners and work towards the centre. New words must associate with all existing adjacent ones, and be next to either two existing words or one existing word and the edge of the table. The gold square in the centre of the table must be left to last and assocciate with all four surrounding words.

== Psychadelic Word Association: Alignment ==

This is your run of the mill radial word association, with one exception. Every word in a column must relate to the bolded word at the top of the column. And yes, you still have to associate with the words at the top. So for example, the word placed to the right of chicken will have to relate to both chicken and firefly.

Carry on.

==Enigmatic Word Association==

In this one, based off of PWA2, you don't have an active part in word associating; rather, it is your job to guess which words could fill in the blanks. There are four words put down in a flower-shape, and five mystery words around them that are related to the words that they touch
horizontally or vertically. It is your job to guess which words could fit in the five blanks.

So that this game can become self-sufficient, beneath each guess vote whether you think it works or not. If a guess gets five votes or more for it, it works. If a vote gets three or more no's, cross it off! When all five spaces are working, you can archive this and start a new one. Cheers!

=Word Disassociation=

==Introduction==
This is a take-off of the original word association, and hasn't been seen since [[/Archive 3|Game #3]].

As with the ultra word association and the ultra branch, leave this here to archive itself separate from the main game. Also, feel free to make a branch occasionally.

==How to play==

This is much like the regular word association,except instead of trying to put a word that is related to the previous one, you put one that has no relation whatsoever!

Sometimes, the game degenerates back into the normal version of word association, but it really doesn't matter because it's fun either way! (See if you can pick out when these switchovers occur)

==Ultra Fixed Word Disassociation: 'River Ystwyth' - Connection amid this chaotic world==
This is a spinoff of the Ultra Fixed Word Association. In this one, not only do you not have control over what the initial words are, the "fixed" words are based on the Word Disassociation game, below. In the interests of keeping this game readable on one screen, please keep the words reasonably short :-)

The main word for this second game was chosen as it was not associated with the first or last words of game 1 or with the random article ([[Fireman's Fund Insurance Company]]).

== Ultra Disassociative Vortex ==

This is similar to the ultra fixed word disassociation, except the difficulty is compounded by there being a spiral of disassociative words, instead of a mere two rows.

Oh, and you have to associate, not disassociate. Have fun :)

==Radial Ultra Disassociate-then Associate==

Starting form the center, disassociate all the blank spaces in the grid except those marked "associate".Do not touch the marked spaces until the rest of the grid is filled in. Then associate the reserved spaces with ALL of the 4 neighboring words.For the disassociation portion, a new entry does not have to border 2 words- it can be legal bordering only one.

==Dealer's Choice==
For this game the ___location of the next move is pre-selected and marked with either an "A" or a "D". If the letter is A, the word must associate, if it is a "D" the word must disassociate. After entering a word, the player then chooses the ___location and type of the next move by placig either an "A" or a "D" anywhere in the grid that touches at least one word
