== Biografia ==

Reed nacque a [[Londra]] nel sobborgo di [[Wimbledon (Londra)|Wimbledon]], figlio secondogenito del giornalista sportivo Peter Reed e di Marcia Beryl Andrews. Aveva un fratello maggiore, David (1936) e un fratellastro Peter (1947). Era nipote del noto regista Sir [[Carol Reed]]<ref name="Treccani" /> e dell'attore e impresario teatrale Herbert Beerbohm Tree e cugino dell'attore [[David Tree]]. Amante della vita, delle donne e dei pub<ref name="Garz" />, dal 1959 al 1969 fu sposato con Kate Byrne, dalla quale ebbe un figlio, Mark. Dalla sua lunga relazione con la ballerina Jacqueline Daryl ebbe una figlia, Sarah. Nel settembre del 1985 si sposò con Josephine Burge, con cui visse fino alla morte.

Oliver Reed nacque a [[Wimbledon (Londra)|Wimbledon]] il [[13 febbraio]] [[1938]], figlio secondogenito del giornalista sportivo [[Peter Reed (giornalista)|Peter Reed]] e di [[Marcia Beryl Andrews]]. Aveva un fratello maggiore [[David Anthony Reed]] ([[7 febbraio]] [[1936]]) ed un fratellastro [[Peter Simon Reed]] ([[Surrey]], [[Inghilterra]], [[5 agosto]] [[1947]]) nato dall'unione tra Peter Reed e [[Kathleen Mary Cannon]].

Reed diventò un attore di fama nel periodo della [[Swinging London]] degli [[anni sessanta]], grazie ai ruoli nei film di [[Michael Winner]] quali ''[[Il complesso del sesso]]'' (1967), con [[Orson Welles]], e ''[[I ribelli di Carnaby Street]]'' (1967). Diretto da suo zio [[Carol Reed]], partecipò nel ruolo di [[Bill Sikes]] al [[musical]] di grande successo ''[[Oliver!]]'' (1968), candidato a 11 [[Premio Oscar|Premi Oscar]] e vincitore di miglior film e miglior regia [[Premi Oscar 1969|nell'edizione degli Oscar 1969]].

Oliver era [[dislessia|dislessico]] e fu espulso da molte diverse scuole private. Una volta prese parte al Ewell Castle School's Sports Day e vinse diverse coppe. Dopodiché andò diretto dal campo di gioco a una festa. Nelle prime ore del mattino seguente, mentre tornava a piedi dalla festa diretto verso casa, fu fermato dalla polizia che lo scambiò per un ladro con un bottino di coppe rubate.

When the UK government raised taxes on personal income, Reed initially declined to join the exodus of major British film stars to [[Hollywood]] and other more tax-friendly locales. During this time he began proclaiming himself as "Mr England", and turned down major roles in two hugely successful Hollywood movies: ''[[The Sting]]'' (1973) (although he did appear in the less than stellar sequel) and ''[[Jaws (film)|Jaws]]'' (1975). His ''Daily Telegraph'' obituary noted that in the late 1970s Reed was finally obliged to relocate to the Channel Islands as a tax exile.
