Nome di scarsissima diffusione in [[Italia]], è l'adattamento fonetico italiano del nome arabo محمّد (''Muḥammad'')<ref name=lastella/>, dalla [[radice (linguistica)|radice]] حمد (''ḥamida''), che vuol dire "lodare", "pregare"<ref name=behind/>, e il significato è quindi "degno di lode"<ref name=behind/><ref name=llewellyn/><ref name=etimo/><ref name=ahmed/>, "lodevole"<ref name=albaiges/>, "[il molto] lodato"<ref name=lastella/><ref name=llewellyn/><ref name=ahmed/>. Condivide etimologia e significato con il nome [[Mahmud]]. Per [[semantica]], inoltre, è affine al nome italiano [[Enea (nome)|Enea]].

In [[lingua araba|arabo]] ''Muḥammad'' significa "il grandemente lodato". È infatti il participio passivo della II forma ("forma intensiva") della radice <ḥ-m-d>, che significa "lodare". Essendo il nome del [[Maometto|Profeta dell'Islam]], è di gran lunga il più diffuso nel mondo [[islam]]ico.
