Per my previous posting, I've taken the latest Wikizine and put it on Wikinews [http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Wikizine_-_Year:_2009_Week:_7-22_Number:_106]. You noted previously that it can still be "Wikizine" as long as I don't muck with the content. All I did was make the formatting more wiki friendly. I'd appreciate if you could take a quick look at let me know if that is ok with you. :Hi, yes it is good for me. The point of making a wikizine is to get people to read it. Putting it on Wikinews can help.

Hi== Talk:Wikizine and Talk:Walter, :) ==
thanks for publishing Wikizine and giving us regulary information about the "Wikimedia World". There is one thing I would like to propse: Please do not publish the content only under the GNU Free Documentation License. <br>
<u>Reason:</u> The license [[:en:GNU Free Documentation License|GFDL]] is rather impractical for print media, because it requires the full text of the GFDL to be printed along with the text. Dual licensing with a license which allows the text to be used more easily, like a [[:en:Creative Commons licenses|Creative Commons license]] (please see licenses at http://creativecommons.org/licenses/) proposal: [http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5/ cc-by-sa-2.5] and the GNU Free Documentation License or direct [[:en:Public Domain|Public Domain]] is much better and we reader can use your information on other places. -- [[User:Gildemax|gildemax]] 16:03, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
Has the topic of licensing come up again recently? I'd like to see wikizine available under a totally unencumbered license - PD or CC-zero. [[User:Sj|-- sj]] <small><nowiki>|</nowiki> [[Meta:Babylon|''help translate'']] |</small>[[User Talk:Sj|<font color="#ff6996">+</font>]] 08:48, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
:I used to use this wiki here for the construction of wikizine. So it was automaticly under the GNU/FDL. I use now my own wiki for it. Almost all of the text is written by me, some re-written by the correctors. But so long it is under the GNU/FDL I can take fragments of text from one of the wikis and use it in wikizine. I do not do that a lot but it happens.
:Is this really a problem? People read wikizine by email, RSS, website, sometimes the copy a fragment and translate it. Wikimedia projects is GNU/FDL, wikizine is for and about the WMF projects. In what situations would the current license be a problem? Greetings, --[[user:Walter|Walter]] <small>''Do you have news? [http://report.wikizine.org Report it to Wikizine]''</small> 01:03, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
:To keep it at the same place, see [[Wikizine/feedback]] --[[User:Walter|Walter]] 19:53, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
:: As per the terms of the GFDL if I use parts of your Wikizine or if I translate it, I have to publish the full text of the GFDL with this work. The [[:en:GNU Free Documentation License|GFDL]] is in my eyes, as I have written, not pratical for print media and imagems. The WIKINEWS e.g. are all under the [http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5/ Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License]. The foundations has learned that now exists other more appropriate licenses. This is only a request to think about a '''dual licensing'''. == GLAM -Challenge ==
:::There's no benefit to using cc-by-sa since it's not compatible with the GFDL. cc-by is a much easier to use license and compatible with all Wikimedia projects (including Wikinews which is not GFDL). [[User:Angela|Angela]] 12:19, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
Wikimedia Australia is hosting [http://wikimedia.org.au/wiki/GLAM Glam-Wiki] as part of this WM-au has organised the [[Wikimedia Australia/GLAM challenge]] with real prizes. We think both the event and the challenge would be of interest to readers of Wikizine [[User:Gnangarra|Gnangarra]] 12:34, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
::::That problem I think there is that I want to be able to copy text fragments form one of the wikis, that is mostly meta, EN wikipedia or foundation and use that text like it is. Those wikis are all GNU/FDL. I do not think it is allowed to re-release text under a different licences if it contains text from a GNU/FDL-only license source. --[[user:Walter|Walter]] <small>''Do you have news? [http://report.wikizine.org Report it to Wikizine]''</small> 12:51, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
:::::I think thats a pretty good argument for keeping gfdl. As for wikinews compatibility, If there is news that affects us, I'm proablly not going to directly copy it out of wikizine, I'm proablly going to condense/re-write it as [[n:template:wn news]] is more suited to one liners (although I don't know what other lang do). In the end it doesn't matter very much for a wikizine type of publication, as really its not redistributed and re-edited that much. [[user:Bawolff]] (not looged in) 01:08, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
:Thanks --[[User:Walter|Walter]] 19:35, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
I have no plans to republish Wikizine, but since you asked for reader feedback:
* I definitely agree with Gildemax that the GNU FDL is impractical. Indeed, the world would be a better place if Wikimeda had been CC-by-sa from the start! (Unfortunately, there was no such thing in 2001.)
* Generally, you should be able to dual licence Wikizine. Your contributors would be willing to go along, right? This allows Wikizine to be copied directly into Wikimedia wikis.
* When you copy from Wikimedia wikis into Wikizine, isn't this usually to talk ''about'' that writing? If so, then this falls under fair use and commentary. You could do that even if Wikizine were proprietary!
* The recent extra edition that repeated a request from Anthere would be an exception. That edition could be released under GNU FDL only, even if the regular editions are dual licensed. (If you had time to ask, I'm sure that Anthere would give permission for CC-by-sa dual licencing, since she wants her message spread widely. But when there is not enough time, exceptions are possible.)

You have helped us in previous years with translations and for that we are most grateful. Now we turn towards the 2011/12 fundraiser. It may seem forever away, but work has already begun getting everything ready to go. This year we want to have landing pages covering as many countries in as many languages as possible.

* [[:ca:|Catalan Wikipedia]] has reached 50,000 in January 4th, 2006
* [[:ro:|Romanian Wikipedia]] has reached 50,000 in January 5th, 2006
Right now, we want to figure out who is interested in translating for the fundraiser. This year we're hoping to have more of a solidified "core" group of translators that we can count on to have work done by a few key dates, but we'd also welcome help from people who are willing to just help out when they can.

Sorry, should have said, I use Feedburner. To quote their explanation: "FeedBurner’s subscriber count is based on an approximation of how many times your feed has been requested in a 24-hour period. Subscribers is inferred from an analysis of the many different feed readers and aggregators that retrieve this feed daily. Subscribers is not computed for browsers and bots that access your feed.
== "try this gadget" publicity? ==
Subscribers is calculated by matching IP address and feed reader combinations, and then using our detailed understanding of the multitude of readers and aggregators and bots on the market to make additional inferences."
I have an idea: in a future WikiZine, could you suggest to people, "log into (specific wiki) and go to your user preferences and look at the gadgets available, and try (gadget)"? A lot of people don't know about the useful gadgets that could make their experiences of reading & editing easier, like HotCat. It could be a regular feature. As new jobs become available, I'd love to be able to post them to announce-l.
== Naughty comments ==
May I do that?
Walter, this is the second time you make a naughty comment regardin Romanian Wikipedia. Please bring proofs on the numbers of articles in January 7. A tip: use purge when checking!!! --[[User:Romihaitza|Romihaitza]] 12:43, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
Warm regards,
:When I visited the wiki the counter was well below 50,000. I agree that is must be that it was the cache and not deletion of articles. It have been that. But I wrongly assumed it was that. I have added a correction to the online version and will put a correction in the next edition. The end result was the same. A visitor would have seen a lower counter the announced. The advice is to flush the cache when your wiki hits a mile stone.

:Hi Gayle. Well, Announce-l is the list for Wikizine since 2005. At least after it existed for a few years as a stillborn mailing list. Wikizine, as "An independent internal news bulletin for the members of the Wikimedia community" was never a success in the best of times. Currently it is like a coma-patient. Technically speaking alive. I am still not ready to pull the plug myself even knowing that (trying) to continue with Wikizine is fairly pointless. The support, interest and certainly the reader feedback is nearly zero since years. The list membership of Announce-l is currently 704 (and I am subscribed several times). That is the number of subscribers I had in 2008. It was never more then about 750. So it is a very small list in list number members, the subscribers are old hands. I have no indication that anyone actually reads what is send to that list. So it is not a very interesting list to send stuff to in its current state.
:About "Naughty comments"; some of the items are not very interesting by nature. I try to find a way to fraze it in a way it is not boring. It is not naughty. If I wanted to write something negative about RO wikipedia then I could have reported that the RO wikipedia is not helping with the fundraiser. I see no donation notice. --[[user:Walter|Walter]] <small>''Do you have news? [http://report.wikizine.org Report it to Wikizine]''</small> 23:54, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
:To answer your question; so long that Wikizine is not formally dead I would like to keep this list reserved exclusively for Wikizine. So I would not like that this list is used to send jobs opening notifications to.
:But ... Announce-l is a WMF-list. I am a guest at this list. So you do not need my permission. Objectively speaking I can understand that the Wikimedia Foundation would wish to reclaim a list with the nice name "Announce-l".
:Greetings, --[[User:Walter|Walter]] 21:52, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
::But ...now I think about it... maybe this can be an opportunity for Wikizine. I am against using Announce-l for postings that are not under the Wikizine-flag because the current list members, how few the may be, have not subscribed for that. The have subscribed to Wikizine. Would I / we could do is - I send an notification to Announce-l as Wikizine about that this mailing list will from now on also will be used for job openings notifications and possibly other WMF notifications, besides of Wikizine. And offer the option & instructions to migrate to an other mailing list exclusively for Wikizine for those who wishes to do so. (I do not expect many if any will actually do that)
Walt, the official press release said the campaign runs througout January 6, the notice was only removed then. I can't see anywhere on any official site in any official note any notice about some more days. -[[User:Romihaitza|Romihaitza]] 16:24, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
::New subscribers to Wikizine are presented the option to subscribe to the jointed list or the Wikizine only list. The benefit is Announce-l can be used to send the job openings to and, because that will hopefully draw some new attention and list members, increases the exposure to Wikizine. And maybe, just maybe, can that lead to once more a resurrection of Wikizine.

:I understand the opening for confusion about it. The orignal end date of the fundraiser was the 6th but it was extended to the 15th, Wikipedia-day. Sorry, i mean to getting the latest file from http://svn.wikimedia.org and then editing it and uploading into the bugzilla to be imported as default file for MZN wiki --[[User:Ali1986|Ali]] 10:37, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
:Is it possible, since i saw the notice: END USERS: DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE DIRECTLY! But translation from Allmessages section is very very hard, and waisting my time --[[User:Ali1986|Ali]] 11:28, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
I wanted to ask for your help. As you may be aware we have been running banners on many language wikis. We have a lot of new content this year and I really want to conduct a thorough review of our translations. This is a combination of feedback from the community, readers, donors as well as those with professional translator experience. This will help us ensure the highest quality of translations used in our messaging.
== quantitative analysis ==
To help us out with this I wonder if you would be willing to give us feedback for Dutch using '''[[Fundraising_2012/Translation/Community_review_-_nl|This Link]]'''
A quantitative analysis by [[User:GlimmerPhoenix]] : [[Wikipedia:WikiXRay]]
Simply follow the simple instructions on that page and if you have any questions feel free to contact me on my talk page.

== Hungarian Wikipedia hitting 50 000 ==
On February the 7th the Hungarian language Wikipedia hit the 50 000 mark. To celebrate the event, the logo ([[:hu:Image:Wiki.png]]) was changed to a celebratory one, featuring the Hungarian Tricolor (the logo was a winner of a vote [http://www.fw.hu/totya/wiki/pics.html][http://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip%C3%A9dia:Kocsmafal_%28javaslatok%29#Eddigi_.C3.A1ll.C3.A1s_.282007._febru.C3.A1r_7..2C_13:37_.28CET.29.29] (#3), where the three runner ups had a similar design (1 through 1bb), and together had more votes than the winner, but lost due to the [[en:Spoiler effect). There was a bit of controversy over deciding which was the 50 000th article, as there were three candidates, all being created or moved into article namespace in a 1 minute period, later one of the 3 articles was deleted, and thus made it quite impossible to determine which was the "first" 50 000th article, and which two are "celebratory articles for achieving 50 000" (at last count the deleted article is considered the 50 000th, but there are pages on Wikipedia which mention one of the other two...).
On this occasion a press release was issued, generating mild publicity[http://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip%C3%A9dia_vita:Megsz%C3%BCletett_a_magyar_Wikip%C3%A9dia_50_000._sz%C3%B3cikke#Feedback] for Wikipedia, on pages with comment turned on, the feedback was all positive.
I wrote this to you, so the fact that we reached 50 000 on Huwiki would be mentioned, and the rest to make the event less "boring". Please don't mention my name in Wikizine, but please do contact me if you have any questions to ask. Best regards, and keep up the good work, --[[User:Bdamokos|Dami]] 15:50, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
The article has been eventually determined to be [[hu:Kettős kockázat (Csillagkapu)|Kettős kockázat]], a page about a Stargate episode. --[[User:Tgr|Tgr]] 17:35, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
== Welcoming templates ==
Would it be possible to take over the account wikizine? That way we could make sure that the new Wikzine Post will be published on every wikimedia version on its homepage. That way we can distribute it by mail and on the Wikimedia projects self.
Recently there was some talk on the mailing lists (I don't know if you followed) about welcoming templates, and as a result [[Cross-project comparisons/MediaWiki:Welcomecreation and Template:Welcome comparisons]] page was created here on Meta. Maybe the readers will have some useful input (apart from collecting actual data, experiences could be shared). Regards--[[User:Bdamokos|Dami]] 21:26, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
