This is a fun and simple game. It's in the [[Wikipedia:Sandbox|Sandbox]] - feel free to join in! It's a good place to practice making links to articles, and to start looking for [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random interesting articles] on [[Wikipedia]].

Simply, the game involves adding ''a single word'' to the list that is related to the previous one. Avoid repeating words, and keep the links tasteful! Please use only [[Help:Link#Wikilinks|blue links]] when associating. [[WP:PIPE|Piped links]] are acceptable in certain circumstances, such as <code><nowiki>[[Queen (band)|Queen]]</nowiki></code>. Clearly, as the game develops, one gets a pretty long list! If you're stuck for ideas, link to the last word in the list and add the first link that appears on that page as the next link. Thus [[Sebastian Junger]] would be followed by [[1962]], and [[Latin]] by [[ancient]].

For those who are curious, the first game began on July 6, 2005. The beginning word was "free".

Try to update the word count each time you add a word. The official limit for the main game is 400 words.

Occasionally, it's good to have some ''branches'' that diverge the main game into several sections. The official limit for said branches is 80 words. Try not to make a branch when the main game is about to close down; that will only store your branch away in the archives. Please only branch when the word exists in the word list.

In addition to connecting words across and down, you can also connect words up or down a layer. This means that once you get beyond the first row, each word will have to relate to ''three'' others.

Because three-dimensional computer screens are not yet commonplace, some concessions must be made to display a three-dimensional game on a two-dimensional screen. The image at right is a representation of the big cube, with little cubes marked off. In the 4×4×4 game illustrated, each layer (marked by Greek letters) is shown by a separate grid, with each grid having coordinates a-d and 1-4.

== Skein Association ==

Welcome to Skein Association. This game plays like a normal ultra word association, except your associations have ''purpose'', they have ''meaning'', and they are useful for something.

For your first task, I'm just going to experiment with the Skein concept. Your goal is to "flip" the switch, by associating a line to it. This will clear out the blue spaces that you could not pass over before. Then, you must associate a line to the keeper of the gate, and "fight" it, by mirroring his association, with the same initial and final word, and the same amount of words in between, but different words in between. When you've defeated the keeper, turn the background color of the table red (#FFAAAA), and I will come by to archive it and present the next challenge.

You may not associate over a gray space. When you have flipped the switch, please remove all #5555FF's. They're easy to find, as they're all in a row.

When associating, you must associate with at least one word in any of the four adjacent directions.

You begin at the "nova" space, and can never associate with the other bolded spaces until you have touched them.

And don't forget that keeper, gate, nova, and switch must be associated to, as they are words too. Plan wisely. Good luck to all of you.
