One Tree Hill is<!-- NOTE: "Is," not "was," is correct. The show does not stop being a show because it goes off the air. See WP:TVLEAD.--> an American drama television series created by Mark Schwahn, which premiered on September 23, 2003, on the WB. After the series' third season, the WB merged with UPN to form the CW, and from September 27, 2006, the series was broadcast by the CW in the United States until the end of its run on April 4, 2012. The show is set in the fictional town of Tree Hill, North Carolina, and initially follows the lives of two half-brothers, played by Chad Michael Murray and James Lafferty, who compete for positions on their school's basketball team and the drama that ensues from the brothers' respective romantic relationships.
Premise
One Tree Hill stars Chad Michael Murray as Lucas Scott and James Lafferty as Nathan Scott, two estranged brothers growing up in a small North Carolina town called Tree Hill. Tree Hill High is the name of the high school which Lucas, Nathan, and their friends attend.

Most of the filming took place in and around Wilmington, North Carolina. Many of the scenes were shot near the battleship USS North Carolina and on the University of North Carolina Wilmington campus. The first four seasons of the show focus on the main characters' lives through their high school years. Within these seasons, we see the characters build unexpected relationships as they face the challenges of growing up in a small town. However, at the beginning of the fifth season, Schwahn advanced the timeline by four years to show their lives after college. This season featured a new storyline supported by flashbacks to their college years. Later, Schwahn made it jump a further fourteen months from the end of the sixth to the start of the seventh season. The opening credits were originally accompanied by the song "I Don't Want to Be" by Gavin DeGraw. The theme was removed from the opening in the fifth season; Schwahn said that this was to lower production costs, to add more time for the storyline, and because he felt that the song was more representative of the core characters' adolescent past than their present maturity. The opening then consisted only of the title against a black background. The theme was restored for season 8, in response to audience demand, and was sung by a different artist each episode.
The show's cast includes Hilarie Burton as Peyton Sawyer, Nathan's ex-girlfriend and a potential love interest (and thus object of rivalry) for Lucas, Sophia Bush as Peyton's somewhat promiscuous best friend (and Lucas's alternative love interest) Brooke Davis, and Bethany Joy Lenz as Lucas's best friend Haley (and needless to say another potential love interest for, and point of rivalry between, the two brothers). Paul Johansson, Barbara Alyn Woods, Barry Corbin, Craig Sheffer, and Moira Kelly are the adults in this teen drama.

The series premiered to 2.5nbspmillion viewers and rose to 3.3nbspmillion in its second week, becoming one of only three shows to rise in their second episode during the 2003–2004 television season. The series received numerous award nominations, winning two Teen Choice Awards.
The show is currently in its third season and the above information is relevant only to the first season. There is nothing going on between Peyton and Lucas anymore, and Nathan and Haley are married. Lucas and Nathan have improved their relationship.

On May 12, 2009, it was confirmed that Murray and Hilarie Burton had declined to return for the seventh season, although accounts of what transpired vary. Their characters, Lucas and Peyton, had been two of the five lead characters and had provided one of the series' central love stories throughout the show. On May 17, 2011, the CW renewed One Tree Hill for a ninth and final season, placing an order for 13 episodes. Bethany Joy Lenz and Sophia Bush were signed as full-time regulars for one final season, and Lafferty appeared as a part-time regular. Murray returned for a special appearance during the final season, which premiered on January 11, 2012. The show is the fourth-longest-running series on the CW network, or the networks that came together to make it up (the WB and UPN), after Supernatural, 7th Heaven and Smallville.

Series overview
One Tree Hill takes place in a seemingly quiet American town. However, despite the quiet, Tree Hill Town separates its inhabitants into two separate groups that occasinally interact with each other; the teenagers, otherwise known as "The Tree Hill Gang"; and the adults of Tree Hill. Although they are inhabiting one town, their "worlds", so to speak, are shown to be almost entirely different.
Set in the fictional North Carolina coastal town of Tree Hill, the main storyline in the early seasons is the relationship between two half-brothers, Lucas and Nathan Scott, who start out as enemies but bonded as the show progresses. The show starts out with Lucas becoming a member of the Tree Hill Ravens (the high school basketball team) with the help of his uncle Keith. Nathan, the team captain, is threatened by this and it becomes the basis of their rivalry, also fueled by Lucas's romantic interest in Nathan's girlfriend, Peyton Sawyer. Later on, Brooke Davis, Peyton's best friend, tries to date Lucas, while Nathan attempts to date Lucas's best friend Haley James. The character of Lucas and Nathan's father, Dan Scott, is occasionally explored throughout. There is a focus on his relationships with Karen Roe, Lucas's mother, and Deb Scott, Nathan's mother, and his decision to stay with Deb rather than Karen, thus abandoning Lucas. These experiences eventually bond the brothers as the series progresses and life unfolds for both of them.

Episodes
The Tree Hill gang, throughout the series, struggle to maintain their balance in their small world, and work out their inner turmoils - their relationships with each other, whether friendly or romantic, their relationships with the adults of Tree Hill. Their relationships are more free than the adults'; with constant, wild swings in situiations concerning friends and couples alike. This may be due to the fact that the gang lacks an antagonist - the situations, events or emotions they encounter are the main antagonist of their lives - rather than a single person (and if not the adults).
List of One Tree Hill episodes
The adults of Tree Hill, on the other hand, generally struggle with their past mistakes and/or pasts in general interfering with their present lives; old loves, old fights and struggles. Their relationships with each other are quite fixated; though they do waver at times, more or less, they remain the same - save for a few major occassions. This may be due to the position of the antagonist being fixated at Dan Scott, who, despite his insecurities, is mainly the source of all that is going bad in Tree Hill.

Cast and characters
Throughout the series, however, it is often shown that the adults of Tree Hill have, at one point or another, willingly or not, neglected the Tree Hill gang. In general, the adults' relations with the Tree Hill gang are represented to be either based on hatred, love, mutual disdain, or general carelessness. Since the adults of Tree Hill are lost in their own struggles with themselves or each other, the Tree Hill gang formed a world of their own, not very different from the adults.

Also, the overall show has a focus on what Coach Whitey refers to as "the game" in almost every episode; basketball.

Conception
There are many cast regulars as well:
Schwahn originally planned to make One Tree Hill a feature length film with the title Ravens, the name of the show's high school basketball team. ===Episode format===
In its 3rd season, The WB moved the show from Tuesday to Wednesday. After it was moved, the show suffered a ratings decline which many thought was due to the timeslot change. Speculation on whether the separation of series co-stars Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush in September of 2005 had anything to do with the ratings slump arose.
Episodes follow a regular structure. An episode normally begins with a recap of events relevant to the upcoming narrative, although this is sometimes dropped to satisfy time constraints. During the first four seasons, the theme tune is played either immediately after the recap or after the first few scenes. Whenever an episode features sensitive or violent subjects, or when an episode's running length is close to the total allotted time, there is no opening montage, but only One Tree Hill written on a black background. From the beginning of season 5, the theme song, "I Don't Want to Be" by Gavin DeGraw, was abandoned, and only the single white-on-black title was used. The theme was restored for season 8, sung by different artists each week. Schwahn's reasons for removing the theme were various:

With the announcement that The WB and UPN would be merging to combine one network, the CW Network, rumors of cancellation soon surfaced. This was brought on by the CW Network executives stating that only the best shows from both networks would be back in the fall. The WB network issued statements that they were 100% behind the show and that no cancellation was in the works.

One Tree Hill is known for its numerous voice-overs featuring either literary quotes or characters reflecting on events of the episode. Most of them have been made by Chad Michael Murray's character Lucas. However, other characters have done so several times. Guest stars Bryan Greenberg, Sheryl Lee, Torrey DeVitto, and Ashley Rickards have also done voice-overs for single episodes. Characters who interact with the main cast, such as Bevin, Chase, Shelly and Glenda, helped to narrate the joint episodes, being portrayed by Bevin Prince, Stephen Colletti, Elisabeth Harnois and Amber Wallace. As the show progresses, songs continue to replace voiceovers occasionally. At the beginning of season 7, Paul Johansson's character, Dan Scott, has taken over the narrator's role.
A landmark episode in the third season, "With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept", which aired on March 1, 2006, racked in a 2.5/4 rating, which was the highest rating for Season 3.

In 2008, a black and white episode on a film noir theme was planned, to be written by Chad Michael Murray. Schwahn said, "I think that noir-themed is very risky, because I think that can be very dark and very guy-ish in its approach. I'd say this is more Casablanca infused."
The May 3, 2006 season finale pulled in a 2.3/4 rating with a 1.4 rating for adults 18-49, the show's biggest audience this season with the exception of the episode on March 1.

Series timeline
On May 17th, 2006, two sources
One Tree Hill starts in 2003 and has a complicated timeline, which varies between contrasting with and corresponding to the real world. In the first season, the main teenage characters are aged sixteen. The first and second seasons cover one year, and the third and fourth seasons another, so the main teenage characters are nearly eighteen at the end of the fourth season. The timeline was further complicated in the fifth season when the show was "dramatically retooled and set four years into the future – after the characters [had] already graduated from college". The fifth season began shooting on July 30, 2007, and premiered January 8, 2008. In it, the characters were stated to be aged twenty-two. In 2009, Schwahn altered the timeline again, setting the seventh season fourteen months after the sixth, thus giving a better explanation for the somewhat abrupt departures of series leads Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton.
and unofficially announced that One Tree Hill was set to return for a fourth season on the CW Network, as part of their 2006-2007 television season.

Explaining the decision to start the series with the teenagers as juniors, Schwahn said, "Lucas and Nathan were important players on the [basketball] team, the most important, and I just couldn't see that happening to freshmen." He also wanted to keep the characters in high school longer, saying, "I know a lot of the shows that we started with, the kids are out of high school now and into college and what have you, and I always thought that there was a loss of energy when that happened. It's hard to have everyone go to the same college and everyone stay together for whatever reason, or you lose some of your principles." Schwahn wanted to reinvigorate the show. "The show in many ways has been refaced and reinvigorated. It's very much a twenty-something show now with some relevant adult characters, and I really like that energy for the show," he said, and elaborated:
The CW Network schedule was officially released on Thursday, May 18, 2006, confirming One Tree Hill's place in the programme line-up. It will still air on Wednesdays, but at the later time of 9/8C. Filming is due to start in July, with the Season 4 premiere airing in the fall (either September or October) of 2006.

Season 1
Set in the fictional suburban town of Tree Hill, North Carolina, One Tree Hill began during the beginning of the varsity basketball season for the Tree Hill High School Ravens. The three main characters who were introduced in the pilot were: Lucas Scott: the boy from the wrong side of the tracks who adored the game of basketball. Nathan Scott: Lucas' paternal half-brother who grew up with everything that Lucas didn't, and Peyton Sawyer: Nathan's troubled but talented girlfriend who shared a unique bond with Lucas. By the third episode two more characters had joined the ensemble including; Haley James: Lucas' quirky best friend and Brooke Davis; Peyton's wild counterpart and fellow cheerleader.

Schwahn felt that altering the series in this way allowed the storylines to be a little more complex, and said the actors welcomed the change. By the end of the seventh season, Schwahn and the production team assumed that the network had given the show its last season and decided to create a "mini" series finale in case the show was not renewed. For the season eight finale, the episode spanned an entire year, showing the progression of Brooke's pregnancy over the course of the episode. It was announced by the network a day after the finale that the show was to be renewed for a ninth and final season. The show features a further time jump of one year in the season opener and a further flash forward in the series finale, showing Jamie playing a high school basketball game on the Tree Hill Ravens, his jersey hanging on the wall with a plaque that reads "All Time Leading Scorer".
Lucas, a literate young teenager who loved playing hoops at "The River Court" with his friends, was suddenly thrust into the world of high school basketball, which was also the world of his estranged father, Dan Scott and his half-brother, Nathan Scott. Lucas joined the basketball team, much to the dismay of his mother, Karen Roe, and the support of his paternal uncle Keith Scott. Lucas was ridiculed out of fear by Nathan and Dan, however he didn't stop when he realized that he had the talent to make it in high school basketball.

Departures of Murray and Burton
Nathan Scott, Lucas' half-brother was the polar opposite of Lucas. He lived in a mansion; his parents owned a beach house. He was popular and was privileged enough to call Peyton Sawyer his girlfriend. Nathan's abrasive personality was also something that he and Lucas did not share. However, the two did share the same father, which would cause conflict with the two as Lucas joined the high school basketball team. Suddenly, Nathan was forced to battle with Lucas over the lead spot on the basketball team. This feud was influenced by his father, Dan and his mother; Deb Scott did not support the two brothers who were constantly bickering. Nathan found a way to get under Lucas' skin by expressing interest in his best friend, Haley James. Rather sooner than later, Nathan truly admired Haley sparking a romance that would lead to more than just revenge.
In 2009, Murray and Burton were confirmed as having declined to return to the series. For months, it was speculated that they would not be returning for the seventh season. In February, The CW announced a series renewal without specifying which cast members had renewed their contracts. A video of Murray, seemingly unaware he was being filmed, saying the show was not bringing him back because they wanted to save money, and encouraging fans to rally behind him, intensified speculation. A video of Burton saying she would stay if she had creative control also surfaced, fueling speculation that The CW did not want to keep Burton on the show without Murray. To some fans, who considered the heart of the show to be the dynamic between Lucas and Peyton, One Tree Hill without the two characters would not work. A TVGuide.com poll found that nearly half of respondents were, however, willing to take a "wait and see" approach to a revamped version of the series. In April, Schwann told a crowd in Paris that all of the actors had signed on for season 7, except for Murray and Burton. She said that since Murray and Burton were moving on, Tree Hill now had to reinvent itself a bit – as it did in 2007, with the four-year flash-forward. "A show going into its seventh year is very open to reinventing itself," said Ostroff. "And one thing I have to give Mark Schwahn a lot of credit for is that he has kept the show so fresh all these years."

Burton told Entertainment Weekly that there was a possibility that she would return for guest appearances if asked, and clarified what happened behind the scenes regarding her contract, stating, "[W]hen I hear that there's turmoil or negotiations based on money, it kind of hurts my feelings, because it's not what's been going on at all." She said, "I think my fan base in particular knows that money isn't necessarily a big motivator for me, that's why I work in the world of independent film." Burton had known for some time that she was leaving, adding, "For me, it was definitely an emotional decision. And a professional decision as well. I got really, really lucky. One Tree Hill was my very first television audition; it was a fairytale. I feel really lucky to have that level of success right out of the gate." Referring to a video she had sent to her fans, she said:
Peyton Sawyer was the damsel in distress of One Tree Hill. Her mother had died when Peyton was in elementary school and her father; Larry Sawyer was never around due to work. Peyton's emotional outlet was art. Many of her drawings and paintings displayed tragedy and angst. Peyton also shared a choppy relationship with boyfriend, Nathan. The two often disagreed and soon broke up as Peyton began to see something more in Nathan's half brother; Lucas.

{{blockquote|The purpose of that video was to dispel the rumors that were being circulated. I was on your end of it for a very long time when I worked at MTV, and I understand how the rumor mill works. Everybody wants a sensational story. People even back then were blaming it on money, and [on me] being high maintenance.... Those rumors were really hurtful. Of anybody on the show, I was the one who was very excited about doing all the extracurricular stuff – the mall tours, the radio tours, going to the upfronts... I loved my involvement with this show, and I really just wanted my fan base to know that I wasn't turning my nose up at this wonderful opportunity I've had for the last six years. There's an ugly trend where actors think they've surpassed the show that made them or the film that made them and badmouth it. I will never say a bad word about One Tree Hill. Haley was the sidekick to Lucas. She was a straight-A student who never got in trouble, and never knew what being popular was like. That all changed when she began dating Lucas' half-brother Nathan. Lucas disapproved of this relationship, even when Haley told Lucas that she was only tutoring Nathan so he would leave Lucas alone. Eventually, their relationship turned into more and as the months progressed and Haley found herself falling in love with Nathan. Finally, Haley was doing something for herself, and not for anyone else.

Criticism of how their characters, Lucas and Peyton, were written out of the series focused mainly on a lack of explanation about where they went, and the exit not having been morbid enough for a star-crossed couple. Although the episode featuring their departure is initially grim, the episode's tone is drastically different by the end. Brooke burst onto the scene as the vixen of Tree Hill. She had no inhibitions, and didn't regret that fact. Peyton and Brooke had been best friends ever since Peyton's mother's death. Brooke served, as comic relief early in the basketball season, however there was a person with feelings underneath Brooke's crazy exterior. Lucas brought the deepness in Brooke out, and soon the two had fallen for each other. Brooke admitted that she was in love with Lucas, just as their relationship was coming to end; and Brooke would have lost both her true love and her best friend.

Schwahn said that he knew that many people would tune in to see how the show would explain Lucas and Peyton's absence, and that the explanation was that they were traveling. He was aware that people might not accept the new version of the show, but said that it needed to move on. To fill the void of Murray and Burton's departures, Robert Buckley and Shantel VanSanten were cast as Nathan's agent Clay and Haley's sister Quinn respectively. Austin Nichols, who plays Julian Baker, was also upgraded to series regular status. Plans for Murray and Burton to return to the series in Season 8 were confirmed. Schwahn said that the actors' busy schedules could possibly prevent a return in time for Brooke's wedding, but he hoped they could return later in the season. Some instances include Sunkist products visible at concerts, in the characters' fridges, and on the school's vending machines. In 2007, One Tree Hill filmed their prom episode in Honey Grove, Texas, as the result of a Sunkist-sponsored competition where fans could submit videos inviting the cast and crew to their town. In 2008, the CW, Warner Bros. and Macy's partnered to offer eight "passionate" fans the chance for a walk-on role on the show and a weekend with the cast, billed as the "Ultimate Fan Weekend in Wilmington". Beginning with the One Tree Hill episode "Nobody Taught Us to Quit", and continuing in the Life Unexpected episode "Music Faced", Haley James Scott and Mia Catalano travel to Portland to perform at a music festival hosted by K-100, the radio station where Life Unexpecteds Cate Cassidy works. The characters meet and bond as a result.
As spring began in Tree Hill, changes began to take place. Lucas turned over a new leaf (and a new haircut), promising to return to the person who he had been previous to becoming a part of the basketball team. Karen had aspirations to return to college and enrolled at the local junior college (where she met professor/boyfriend Andy Hargrove). Brooke's family had lost all their money, causing Brooke to see another side of life, while the absence of Jake left Peyton stunned and depressed. Keith took over Scott Motors, while Dan was recovering from his heart attack, and Dan expressed interest to get to know Lucas better. There were also two new students who arrived for their spring semester at Tree Hill High, siblings Felix (Michael Copon) and Anna Tagarro (Daniela Alonso). They had relocated to Tree Hill after rumors about Anna's sexuality began to surface at their ultra-conservative boarding school. Felix was an outgoing, humorous, "player" (once referred as "Brooke in pants") who didn't click well with the other students of Tree Hill High. He did form a friendship with resident-geek Mouth, but that friendship was tainted after they both expressed feelings for Brooke. At first, Brooke merely thought of Felix has just another boy toy that she could use and lose. For, she was not about to give up her heart, and then have it be smashed. The two, however did become more than "friends with benefits" for a short time. Brooke ended their relationship after discovering that Felix had tagged the word "DYKE" on Peyton's locker because he was angry and jealous. Lucas met Anna on "Dare Night" and the two began to date, much to Felix's objection, their relationship never did spawn into anymore more than minor puppy love, because Lucas still had strong feelings for Brooke, while Anna couldn't figure out her sexuality.

Themes
Felix's mistake of vandalizing a student's locker caused him to be expelled from Tree Hill High School, and his parents made the decision to send him to military school after Anna told school authorities of Felix's actions. Not long after, Anna made the decision to return to her boarding school and own up to her sexuality. This decision came after a visit from ex-girlfriend Darby and after Anna came out to her parents. Both of the Tagarro children experienced a lot in their short time in Tree Hill, however by the time they left it was clear who had grown from her experiences.
One Tree Hill consists of various themes, such as love, friendship, rivalries and betrayal, and explores the reasons behind them. Neal Solon of DVD Verdict stated, "Much of the show is based on the mistakes the teens' parents have made and the way these mistakes manifest themselves in the students' lives." Two of the show's most prominent themes have been basketball and romance.

Basketball
Brooke had always been the "partaay-girl" with the bad-grades and reputation. With her father's business gone under, Brooke ended her Junior year in high school more independent than the shallow cheerleader that appeared at the beginning of Season 1. After her first job, Brooke realized that she had more to offer than just mere comic relief and moronic cheers. She decided to run for Student Body President against some of the most scholarly students at Tree Hill High. One stuck out more than the others, Erica Marsh (Katherine Bailess), tried to discourage Brooke for running for such an ambitious position. Brooke did not back down. She stood strong, even when Erica turned to dirty politics, and was triumphant after Mouth gave a moving Peer-speech to the entire student body. Brooke was far too busy to worry about boys, and had no problem discarding her relationship with Felix. By the end of the second semester, feelings started arising for Lucas once again. Brooke's parents decided to relocate to California after Brooke's father received an amazing job opportunity, however it was Lucas who found a new home for Brooke; at Karen's house, in Lucas' room while Lucas tried living with Dan. As soon as feelings resurfaced for Lucas, Brooke found remnants of his relationship with Peyton, which led her to believe he still had feelings for her. On the second day of summer vacation, when Brooke was set to leave Tree Hill to spend her summer in California with her parents, Lucas declared his love for her. However, Brooke was taken aback by this declaration and left without ever stating her feelings to Lucas. Nonetheless, Brooke turned into a responsible, loyal and loving friend to Karen, Peyton, Nathan and Lucas. "The girl behind the red door" had grown up during her junior year.

Schwahn stated of the basketball element, "A lot of times, the basketball games for us are like the crimes, or it's the courtroom, the police precinct, or the medical operating arena – it was like our home turf." He said the other shows rarely focus on the court case or medical problem being dealt with, but are more about the people. "For us, that's what basketball was. It was never about playing basketball, but it was about what was happening to the people when this game or tournament was approaching."
Nathan had also gone through a metamorphosis in the first and second seasons. His relationship with Haley had turned Nathan into a noble, loving young man who wasn't afraid to take chances. As their marriage began (circa late-February 2005; Tree Hill time) Haley and Nathan had never loved each-other more. Then arrogant musician Chris Keller showed up in town, and led Haley to realize that her aspirations of being a famous singer could become far more than a daydream. Nathan was, understandably, threatened by Chris, and surprised of Haley's persistence to see him. After all, Nathan had turned down High Flyers, a prestigious basketball camp for Haley. He also made the brave decision to get himself tested for Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) the genetic condition that caused Dan's heart attack. The results turned up negative, while Haley and Nathan's marriage took a turn for the worse. Haley began lying to Nathan about seeing Chris, while Nathan continued to display his commitment to Haley. Haley's older sister Taylor James (Lindsay McKeon) showed up in Tree Hill after dropping out of college and took up residence with Haley and Nathan. It was revealed that Taylor was the girl whom Nathan had lost his virginity to during the fall of his Freshman year in high school. Nathan came clean with Haley, thinking that this revelation and Nathan's honesty would only strengthen their marriage. One week later, Nathan discovered that Haley had e-mailed Chris once (Taylor pretended to e-mail him numerous other times) and had even kissed him when he left town. That same night of the discovery, Chris Keller appeared in Tree Hill once again as the opening act for the Wrec Room Tour (the televised version of the One Tree Hill tour). Haley ended up leaving Tree Hill to pursue her musical career, leaving Nathan all alone. Nathan reverted to form, and got suspended from school for calling his teacher a slut and drinking in class. Subsequently, he was arrested (along with Lucas) for drinking and driving, and he even punched his father, Dan, after he made an insulting remark about Haley. After a failed attempt to bring Haley home, he and Lucas ventured off with Nathan's Uncle Cooper to experience professional car-racing. Nathan, after experiencing flashbacks of Haley, Nathan swerved and hit the wall of the racetrack. While in a coma, Nathan dreamt of what life would be like if Dan had married Karen instead of his mother, Deb. Once he awoke, Lucas asked him if he hit the wall on purpose, in an attempt to commit suicide. The question remained unanswered; however Nathan did mend his relationship with his mother. Nathan decided that he would attend the summer basketball camp at High Flyers, even though his mother had just been released from drug rehab. Deb and Nathan also wanted to completely rid themselves from Dan, forever. But Nathan's demons would soon catch up to him. The night he moved out of his apartment and back into the Scott home, there was a surprise waiting outside of his front door. The bad boy of Tree Hill had made a complete 180 from the person he had once been.

In season 2, the basketball drama was completely removed from the series, as executives felt that the show was geared more toward a male audience. David Janollari, then entertainment president at The WB, attributed the show's sophomore success partly to its shift in focus from a male-driven sports plot to expanding the stories of its girls. He felt they had time to "step back and learn from audience response" and that Schwahn tailored the show toward the "core audience". Schwahn said, "Girls watch the show in large numbers. [In the first season], the girls were sort of appendages to the boys." Show producer Joe Davola and Schwahn agreed with "sex sells" and "skin to win" sentiments for storyline directions. Less time on the basketball court could afford One Tree Hill more time for plots fueled by sex and drugs. Lack of basketball drama, however, meant a decrease in male viewership. In a 2006 interview, Schwahn said, "In the second TV season, we didn't play any basketball, which was the rest of their junior year, and I felt that the show suffered a little bit."
Haley James (Scott), ever the tragic hero of season 2, once virtuous and dependable changed during Season 2. Before, Haley had never made any impulsive decisions, however once she realized that impulsive didn't mean bad, she married Nathan and later sought out her dreams of being famous. This however meant that she had to leave Nathan and ruin their marriage. She conquered her stage fright after the opening night at TRIC, when Peyton's performer (Chris Keller) decided that he didn't want to play to a crowd of tasteless teenagers. Haley's performance was well-received by her peers and sparked Chris Keller's interest in her. He asked Haley be the female vocal in a song he was working on. The song was a cover of Ryan Adams' "When the Stars Go Blue." Haley and Chris bonded during their recording session, causing Haley to lie to Nathan about her whereabouts while he was out of town. Haley did her best to stay honest and faithful to Nathan, but Chris didn't stop at trying to pursue the married woman. Haley drifted further and further from Lucas during her Junior year, so she had no constant council. After singer, Michelle Branch expressed interest in her voice; Haley made the decision to accompany Chris and Branch on their tour. When Nathan confronted Haley in the midst of the successful tour, Haley told him that she had rushed into everything too fast. This attitude soon changed, after Nathan had been in a near-fatal car accident. Haley decided to rush home, even if it meant being cut from the tour. However, Nathan advised Haley not to come home because it was time that they both pursue their dreams. Then, Dan presented Haley with annulment papers, already signed by Nathan. After Lucas and Brooke visited Haley in New York; Haley made the final decision to stay on the tour and never look back. However, that wasn't the case when she showed up at the Scotts' front doorstep.

Romance
Peyton, who had also changed from the abrasive stand-offish girl that used to be the girlfriend of Nathan Scott, was now strong and wise. Her friends turned to her for advice and counsel, but that didn't mean she had all the answers. Peyton had an idea to start an all-ages club night at one of Tree Hill's local clubs. She met with a notorious band manager, who at first brushed her off for being so young, but then softened and told her that she had what it took to be a smart business-woman. Minutes later, he presented her with a hit of cocaine. Peyton took part in drug consumption, and kept it secret from her friends. Why was she so upset? Karen had just found a great place for a business expansion, which meant Peyton would get her all-ages club night. However, something was missing. More than one thing was missing. Her father had left to begin his dredging business, her mother; Anna Sawyer had died, and Jake and Jenny had left town to escape the clutches of Nikki; Jenny's bitter mother. Peyton longed for Jake, and in the midst of all of her friend's dramas she found herself being overlooked. Peyton's depression continued after realizing how alone she was at the Tree Hill formal. The day after, she discovered the word "DYKE" painted on her school-locker. In response to the hate crime (even though Peyton was not a lesbian) she was suspended from school after wearing a shirt that was deemed offensive to the student body. Peyton was now more isolated than ever, and thought she only had one thing to turn to; cocaine. Peyton was very close to participating in a drug-deal with Rick, but Jake magically showed up to rescue Peyton from her ultimate downfall. Jake and Peyton retrieved Jenny and made a home at Peyton's house. Jake and Peyton didn't know what to make of their strange relationship, however sooner rather than later they did begin dating. Peyton opted to take it slow; she had only had sex with one person, and didn't want to rush anything with a boy who was much more experienced than her. After it was clear that the two had fallen in love, they did have sex with each-other. Then Nikki returned from Seattle explaining that a judge had granted her sole custody of Jenny. Jake couldn't let Nikki have Jenny and sent her with Whitey to relatives in Florida. He then turned himself in for the kidnapping of Jenny Jagielski. Peyton and Jake's relationship did not fizzle, even though he was in jail. Jake's love had made Peyton a better person and an optimist. She reconciled with Lucas, and regained her position as the moral center of the Tree Hill gang. Peyton's persistence with Jake's lawyers did help his case and he was to be released from prison. However, Nikki had found Jenny and kidnapped her. Jake had to leave Peyton, once again. Peyton was torn up, but realized she had gotten what she had wished for: everlasting love. A mysterious woman turned up the day after Jake left, informing Peyton that she was a reporter from the Alternative Press magazine who was assigned a story on "the girl who got the Wreckers and Jimmy Eat World to play her club night", that girl was Peyton. However, this woman was not who she seemed.
Schwahn made Lucas and Peyton's love story a central theme of the show, saying he "designed a world where Peyton and Lucas were meant to be together" and that "the seeds were planted for [Lucas] to pick Peyton in the pilot – in [that] first episode ... Lucas began the second season longing to return to his roots, rather than the unsatisfying young man he had become. He settled down and began dating Anna, but that relationship ended after Lucas realized he was in love with Brooke. Lucas also learned that he had Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a genetic disease he got from his father, Dan. However, he couldn't tell his mother, or anyone, this because it would ruin his life. To protect Keith from the devious clutches of his brother and to get his medication, Lucas made the decision to move in with Dan. Lucas and Dan did actually bond for some time. They shared the same appreciation for classic American Literature and Dan expressed genuine interest in his son's life. However, Lucas had another interest on his mind. He wanted to bring down Dan for hurting his mother, Deb, Nathan, Keith, Jules, Whitey and all the other people who Dan had ruined. Lucas believed that he could complete decimate Dan's life as revenge for Dan's years of pure evil. Lucas did discover suspicious activity at the car dealership, however he needed expert opinion. He sought the help of his mother's boyfriend, Andy and the two teamed up against Dan. Lucas also had to be there for his brother, Nathan who had been emotionally damaged after his wife, Haley had left him. Lucas could relate to Nathan because Haley had been his best friend who left without even saying goodbye. Lucas also was there for Brooke, who needed help in her presidential campaign. Anna even wanted Lucas to stand by her, as secrets were revealed about her sexuality. Lucas showed allusions to his father after he lied to his brother about going after Dan, but Lucas believed he was doing the right thing. Andy left Tree Hill, but he also left important clues to Dan's scam. Lucas could finally take down his father. Dan found out about his son's plan and rearranged everything to make it look like the whole scam was just to test Lucas' loyalty. Obviously, Lucas had failed and declared that he could finally let Dan go. Nathan also discovered that Lucas had been lying, and told him that once he returned from High Flyers, they would no longer be brothers. Lucas was then semi-rejected from Brooke, as she left for California. Lucas began the season wanting to become a better version of the person he had become, however as the school year closed he had lost all he had worked for.

Making Lucas and Peyton the central love story created a rivalry between their fans and those who would prefer him to be with or end up with Brooke. "[These] are two very passionate camps. And don't think I don't know it," stated Schwahn. "I think sometimes one camp thinks they're being ignored." Schwahn said that although he designed Lucas and Peyton to be together from the start, this did not preclude Brooke and Lucas ending up together, and that he was aware of the "great chemistry" between their portrayers, real-life ex-spouses Murray and Bush. He was not stubbornly holding on to the idea of [Lucas and Peyton]. He also denied some speculation according to which Murray and Bush's divorce affected the writing in regard to the love triangle's resolution, confirming that every decision concerning Brooke and Lucas' relationship (and thus also their definitive break-up) was made independently and regardless of the actors' private issues. Schwahn said the Peyton-Lucas-Brooke love triangle is also by design and became a staple of the show. "There is a huge fanbase dedicated to Brooke and Lucas, and sometimes [those people] feel a bit betrayed, just as the fanbase dedicated to Peyton and Lucas felt betrayed [in season 2 and parts of season 3]", said Schwahn. "That tells me that we've done things correctly – that's the strength of a love triangle."
The adults of Tree Hill also had eventful lives during the second season. Karen went back to school to study business and found true love in her professor, Andy Hargrove. Dan spent the season attempting to get back at Keith for sleeping with Deb by hiring Jules to get Keith to fall in love with her. Keith did fall in love with Jules, however Jules fell in love with him too, and they got engaged. Jules, filled with guilt left Keith before reaching the altar, which prompted Keith's exit of Tree Hill. Deb had started a pain-killer addiction due to her tumultuous marriage to the town villain. She checked herself into rehab after realizing she had to get better for her son.

One debate concerned the season 2 episode "Don't Take Me For Granted", in which Lucas says that a girl is "slipping away" and he needs to confess his love for her, but shows up at Brooke's house instead of Peyton's. Most viewers (including Lucas–Peyton and Brooke–Lucas fans) had trouble interpreting the "slipping away" line as a reference to Brooke, since Peyton had been the girl Lucas had been in love with in season 1 and the two had since become estranged. Sources cited fans as pondering four questions: When was Brooke slipping away? Did Lucas simply mean he did not want to lose her? Was it a plot device to make it seem like Peyton? Or was it Peyton? Speculation that Murray and Bush's marriage affected Lucas's sudden and forced change of heart was also discussed. Schwahn stated:
The season finale brought returns, exits and scheming to Tree Hill. Karen left Tree Hill to go to New Zealand with Andy, however Andy went mysteriously AWOL. Jake left Tree Hill to find Jenny. A mysterious woman came into Peyton's life, and Deb and Nathan conspired to leave Dan forever. The last ten minutes of the season finale were perhaps the most exciting of the season. After being dismissed from his father and brother, Lucas returned home to confess his feelings for Brooke with a "goodbye" kiss. They both knew the kiss meant more than that, however a tearful Brooke didn't know how to react, and she left Lucas without any clue as to what she felt. After receiving chilling IMs from a ghostly screen name, Peyton was convinced that the so-called "reporter" called Ellie was up to no good. Ellie showed up at Peyton's door ready to reveal the truth behind her entry into Tree Hill. She was Peyton's biological mother. Upon returning to the Scott home, Nathan and Deb reunited. As Nathan was retrieving luggage from the front porch Haley stood there hoping to reunite with her husband. After manipulating everyone around him once again, Dan returned to the dealership thinking he was triumphant. He had received a gift of alcohol with a note with the words "For everything you've done." inscribed on it. Thinking this was a gift for his services at the dealership, Dan drank celebrating his many evil winnings. A white substance was found in Dan's alcohol, causing him to pass out. But not before getting a glimpse at the person who was going to ultimately rid Tree Hill of Dan's evil by starting fire to the dealership leaving an unconscious Dan trapped inside.

"Of all the episodes in the first three seasons, there are two mentions of condoms. One happens when Deb catches Brooke and Lucas at the drug store buying condoms and whipped cream", said Anzicek. "The second happens in season two when Brooke throws a wedding reception for Nathan and Haley and decorates the room with condoms blown up like balloons." Anzicek said the teenagers, who are only supposed to be sixteen and seventeen at this time, are presented as very sexually experienced, especially Brooke, and that the one exception is Haley. Ian Arbuckle of CHUD.com complimented the series on its musical aspects and flexibility, feeling that "One Tree Hill is firmly couched in both the pop television and pop music traditions" and that the show "doesn't focus exclusively on the teenagers, but also stretches out to include dedicated subplots for their parents and other adults." Chris Carle of IGN said, "Like the series itself, the offering is a little more adult (read: adult contemporary) and a little less fresh than other similar soundtracks. It's not without its standouts, but overall the selection is plucked from the lighter fare on alt rock radio." Arbuckle stated that the show adds division between the teenagers and adults by having the teenagers focus on love and the adults focus on revenge. One of the audience's main concerns had been which girl Lucas would end up with. Writing for DVD Verdict, Neal Solon commended the series' first season for being about more than betrayal and questionable morals, and instead highlighting the impact of the parents' mistakes on the teenagers' lives, which was something he identified as lacking in other teen shows. He felt that the season 1 finale was strong partly because its creators did not know if the WB would renew the show. "The last few episodes bring some form of closure to the major story arcs, while leaving the door wide open for further development should the show continue. It is an artfully employed strategy that paid off", he said.

U.S. television ratings
The series premiere was watched by 2.5nbspmillion viewers and achieved a 1.9 Adults 18–49 rating on September 23, 2003. The following week, it rose to 3.3nbspmillion and a 2.4 demographic, becoming one of the three shows to rise in its second episode in the 2003–2004 TV season.

The CW only attracts a fraction of the audience its competitors do. "So the strategy is super-serving a young coveted demographic. "Of all the shows that they've launched in the last two years, this one has the most traction", said Stacey Lynn Koerner, at the time an executive vice president at Initiative, a media planning agency. "It does have an audience it's connecting with – a loyal audience that comes back week in and week out." The show was particularly popular among the young viewership. It became the first choice of prime-time television for teenage girls and was reported in January 2005 to be the program in Tuesday's 9 pm time slot most viewed by women aged 12 to 34.

The series finale was the highest rated among women 18–34 (1.4/4) for The CW in more than a year. It was The CW's best Wednesday night in adults 18–34 since premiere week which took place on September 14, 2011, and best adults 18–49 and women 18–49 ratings since December 7, 2011.
