In Italia la striscia è stata pubblicata sul mensile [[Linus (rivista)|''Linus'']] dal numero di maggio [[2008]].
Nel 2045, su un [[Terra|pianeta Terra]] terribilmente inquinato e sovrappopolato, le fonti energetiche sono quasi del tutto esaurite e imperversa una crisi economica e sociale apparentemente inarrestabile: la stragrande maggioranza degli individui vive tra povertà cronica, guerre e violenza.
Da settembre [[2012]] Thompson ha interrotto il lavoro alla striscia per via del [[Malattia di Parkinson|morbo di Parkinson]], diagnosticatagli anni addietro.
Unica distrazione dallo squallore della vita è OASIS ("Ontologicamente Antropocentrica Simulazione di Immersione Sensoriale"), la più immensa e immersiva [[realtà virtuale]] della storia dell'umanità. Nato come [[Massively multiplayer online|gioco on-line di massa]], col tempo ha unito al proprio interno ogni [[videogioco]] mai creato, diventando una simulazione attiva di migliaia di mondi ispirati alla [[cultura pop]] e accessibile gratuitamente e in totale anonimato attraverso visori e [[Interfaccia aptica|attrezzatura "aptica"]] (che trasmette il senso del tatto).

con un video postumo il mondo viene a conoscenza di un ''"[[Easter Egg]]"'': un oggetto virtuale nascosto nell'immensità di mondi digitali di OASIS, che avrebbe garantito alla prima persona in grado di trovarlo l'intera eredità del plurimilliardario creatore di videogiochi. Da allora gli utenti di OASIS più agguerriti nella "Caccia" si definiscono ''"Gunters"'' (contratto da ''"Egg hunters"'', "cacciatori dell'Uovo"). I ''Gunters'' si dedicano allo studio sistematico delle passioni [[nerd]] di Halliday, cresciuto negli [[Anni 1980|anni '80]] del [[XX secolo]] tra [[sala giochi|sale giochi]], [[cinema di fantascienza|film di fantascienza]] e [[Gioco di ruolo|giochi di ruolo]] nella convinzione che più ne sapranno più saranno in grado di tradurne gli indizi e vincere la sfida: trovare una dopo l'altra le tre "chiavi" e le tre "porte", accedendo alla serie di prove e indovinelli alla fine delle quali si trova la vittoria. Ma non solo i comuni utenti si dedicano alla Caccia: anche il più grande [[provider internet]] del mondo, la IOI ("Innovative Online Industries"), pur di ottenere l'eredità di Halliday e mettere le mani su OASIS è disposta letteralmente a tutto. L'azienda ingaggia giocatori ed esperti che, sotto contratto vincolante, esplorano OASIS con [[Avatar (realtà virtuale)|''avatar'']] tutti uguali contrassegnati ognuno da un codice di matricola di sei cifre, per cui sono chiamati "Sixer" da parte dei Gunter, che nutrono per questi "prezzolati".
Bambino di otto anni estremamente schizzinoso col cibo e assolutamente refrattario a un qualunque sforzo fisico. Adora realizzare diorami in scatole da scarpe, considerandoli vere e proprie opere d'arte. È un lettore di fumetti e fan di '''"Little Neuro"''', un fumetto in cui non succede pressappoco nulla.
Ma dopo cinque anni di infruttuose ricerche, stupendo tutti, il diciottenne Wade è il primo ad ottenere la prima chiave, facendo la sua comparsa in cima al "Segnapunti", che registra pubblicamente i progressi nella Caccia, con il suo [[nickname]] da Gunter: Parzival. Squattrinato orfano che vive in un fatiscente quartiere di case mobili impilate l'una sull'altra (le cosiddette "cataste"), Wade è cresciuto nel mito di Halliday e col sogno di trovare l'Easter Egg. La sua cronica mancanza di denaro gli impedisca di esplorare i mondi di OASIS e di far crescere di livello il suo avatar, limitando i suoi spostamenti a rarissimi passaggi concessi da altri giocatori e al "pianeta" dedicato alla scuola virtuale che frequenta, Ludus.

La mamma di Alice e Petey. Guida un furgone dal colore definito da Alice "talmente neutro da non esistere in natura".
Ma è proprio sul noioso e graficamente ripetitivo Ludus che un'intuizione gli permette di trovare il nascondiglio della Chiave di Rame, riuscendo prima di chiunque altro ad ottenerla, e ritrovando il proprio nickname catapultato in cima al Segnapunti, la pagina web che monitora la classifica della Caccia. Proprio alla sfida per la prima chiave che Parzival incontra per la prima volta la Gunter d'alto livello e [[blogger]] Art3mis, che di lì a poco diventa la seconda in classifica. Anche il miglior amico di Parzival, Aech, appena vista la novità sul Segnapunti, intuisce la posizione del nascondiglio, ottenendo per terzo il prezioso oggetto e, come chiunque abbia l'abbia trovato, l'indovinello che conduce alla Prima Porta.

Ormai tutto il mondo si è accorto della novità e su tutti i media e i [[Forum (Internet)|forum di discussione]] si sprecano le teorie su chi siano i tre utenti e dove si trovi la Chiave e altri due Gunter, Shoto e Daito, riescono a guadagnarsi un posto in classifica.

Nel frattempo alla [[casella di posta elettronica]] di Parzival viene contattato dal leader dei Sixer, il capo delle operazioni della IOI, Nolan Sorrento, il quale però, di fronte al rifiuto del Gunter, fa esplodere la "catasta" dove vive. Salvatosi per un colpo di fortuna dall'attentato alla sua vita, avverte gli altri quattro utenti in corsa nella gara dei mezzi a cui la IOI è disposta a ricorrere pur di vincere. Intanto però i Sixer invadono in forze il pianeta Ludus, riempiendo il Segnapunti dei codici a sei cifre dei loro avatar, seguiti poi da centinaia di Gunter che, alleatisi tra loro, riescono a recuperare le ultime posizioni.
Vive in un'altra zona della città e ogni tanto la famiglia la va a trovare. Ha l'abitudine di tirare uova alle auto che passano di fronte a casa sua. Ha un enorme e pacatissimo cane nero, '''Shirley''', di cui Alice ha molta paura.

Thompson has said that Petey, Andre and Loris together are like an atom, with Andre as the proton, Petey as the neutron, and Loris as the electron. :Along with Dill, Beni is Alice's other best friend, the dark-haired and dark-skinned one. He appears to be technically minded and is skilled with tools; his grandmother "tells filthy jokes in Spanish" and he himself once used the interjection "Hijole!" implying he might be [[Hispanic]]. He is good at [[soccer]].
;Ernesto Lacuna
:Ernesto is a crossing guard that Petey met and initially thought existed only in his imagination. He wears glasses and is always well-groomed in a tie and vest. When he was fired from his crossing guard position, he blamed Petey. He declared his affection for Viola and claimed a super-power (putting people's feet to sleep). Petey just wishes he would go away. Andre has told Petey definitively that Ernesto is imaginary, though he has yet to prove it; Mrs. Otterloop and Viola have both interacted with Ernesto, implying that he in fact exists.
;Viola D'More
:Viola, a girl in Petey's school band, plays the [[marimba]]. She wears glasses and has curly hair. She calls Petey "Petey Potterpoop" (a nickname which had, in fact, been given to Mr. Otterloop when he was Petey's age) and seems to enjoy embarrassing him, although she is always friendly and has never been deliberately cruel. Their relationship remains ambiguous, Petey sometimes seems to like her and at other times is almost indifferent. Alice calls her Petey's "almost girlfriend". Viola has an over-sized backpack with many adornments, one of which (a purple unicorn) she gave Petey as a charm against Ernesto. It apparently worked since Petey did not see Ernesto for several days after. For a long time, her last name was uncertain; Ernesto called her 'Viola D'More' when he was claiming her as 'his love' (see [[Viola d'amore]]). The D'More surname was confirmed in a June 2010 strip.
;Marcus
:A classmate of Alice. Bespectacled and nerdy, Marcus is scared of his mother, who is always documenting him for scrapbooks.
;Ms. Bliss
:The only teacher at Blisshaven Academy, a pre-school attended by Alice, Beni, Dill and Marcus. She loves education and is usually cheerful. She often becomes irritated with the children's constant antics. She has been engaged multiple times to Timmy Fretwork, the Banjo Man, although they have yet to wed. Thompson has admitted on several occasions that Bliss is her first name, not her surname.
;Mr. Danders
:Blisshaven's pet [[guinea pig]]. Mr. Danders claims to be well read and has many literary opinions. He often speaks using eloquent, long words. A prominent character in the strip's early days, he last appeared in March 2012 when the strip featured guest cartoonists.
;Andre Chang
:A heavyset boy Petey met at cartoon camp. He has bushy hair with thick bangs, coke-bottle glasses, and wears shirts with sound effects printed on the front. He likes reading comics with lots of action and noise. He gets along very well with Alice.
;Loris Slothrop
:A short girl who goes to cartoon camp with Petey. She has big eyes, although her right eye is usually covered by her hair. She has from two to three ponytails sticking from her hair. When asked what type of comics she prefers, she said she likes "little cute animal cartoons with big eyes who're also magic robot vampire ninjas, but sensitive," an example being "Squirrelly Shirley, the pink robot alien girl crime-fighter who’s a werewolf squirrel." Loris's self-made comic book, "Lulu Lightspeed," "deals realistically with issues facing blue, big-eyed robots with pointed ears." She has been shown to be very fast, being the first one to run out the door when a bee invaded the cartoon camp. The surname "Slothrop" is shared with Tyrone Slothrop, the protagonist of [[Gravity's Rainbow]] by [[Thomas Pynchon]].
;Nara
:An African-American preschooler about whom few details have surfaced. She frequently brings duck-shaped potatoes for show and tell, much to Alice's chagrin.
;Sofie
:A girl who came to Blisshaven more recently. At first she seemed very timid, sitting silently in the corner. After Alice dubbed her "Weird New Kid", Sofie revealed her aggressive nature. Alice is also seemingly incapable of remembering Sofie's name, frequently calling her "Soapie" and/or "Sofa."
;Kevin
:A preschooler with blond hair, prominent ears, and a "bucket head", according to Alice. He seems to have many anxieties and is a natural target for Alice's teasing.

:The car is tiny and [[TARDIS|bigger on the inside than on the outside]], and a recurring visual and verbal gag is how impossibly small the car is. Alice says it is "half [[cuisinart]]".

:Big Shirley is a large, friendly dog that belongs to Alice's grandmother. Alice is completely terrified of Big Shirley, once even abandoning her precious toy bunny Polyfil to save herself from the dog's slobbering clutches.

:A strip-within-the-strip, a parody of ''[[Little Nemo]]''. Petey's favorite reading, a strip about a little boy who hardly ever stirs from his bed.

:On several occasions, Petey has reluctantly played soccer on his mother's insistence. His lack of athletic skill and social awkwardness has resulted in multiple out-of-body experiences.

A second collection, ''Children at Play: A Cul de Sac Collection'', was published in 2009 by Andrews McMeel. It features a foreword by writer-artist [[Mo Willems]]. A treasury book, ''Cul de Sac Golden Treasury: A Keepsake Garland of Classics'', was published July 6, 2010 by Andrews McMeel. It features strips from the previous two book collections along with the early strips from the original run in the ''Washington Post''. In 2012, Thompson took time away from the strip in order to receive treatment for [[Parkinson's disease]].
