Durant stood unsuccessfully for [[Rother Valley (UK Parliament constituency)|Rother Valley]] in the [[1970 United Kingdom general election|1970 general election]]; the seat was retained by [[Labour Party (UK)|Labour]]'s [[Peter Hardy, Baron Hardy of Wath|Peter Hardy]]. After Reading's constituencies underwent boundary changes, he was the Member of Parliament for [[Reading West (UK Parliament constituency)|Reading West]] from 1983 to 1997.
