By the middle of [[2003]] a different version of "Why Not" was included on Hilary's debut album ''[[Metamorphosis (Hilary Duff album)|Metamorphosis]]''. In the UK, the song was released as the second single from ''Metamorphosis'' as part of a [[double A-side]] release with "[[Come Clean (song)|Come Clean]]".

[[Walt Disney Records|Disney International]] released the single internationally on June 23, 2003. The CD single release included a remix of "Why Not," a remix of "[[I Can't Wait (Brooke McClymont song)#Hilary Duff version|I Can't Wait]]" and the music video. Later in 2003, a different version of "Why Not" was released on Hilary Duff's first album, ''[[Metamorphosis (Hilary Duff album)|Metamorphosis]]''. According to Duff, the song is also included as a single for the album ''Metamorphosis.''<ref>This was from "At Home with Hilary Duff," a featurette on ''[[Dignity (album)|Dignity]]'' deluxe edition DVD, released on the [[Hollywood Records]] label in 2007.</ref>

"Why Not" has three versions. The main version is the one which Duff originally recorded for the [[The Lizzie McGuire Movie (soundtrack)|soundtrack]] of ''[[The Lizzie McGuire Movie]]''. The second version features different lyrics in the first verse and was included on Duff's 2003 album ''Metamorphosis.'' A third version was released on Duff's 2005 compilation album ''[[Most Wanted (Hilary Duff album)|Most Wanted]]'' and is a slightly remixed version of the recording released on ''Metamorphosis''. The ''Metamorphosis'' album version is included on Duff's 2008 compilation album ''[[Best of Hilary Duff]]''.

The video first premiered on Disney Channel in June, [[2003]]. Its premiere drew 3.2 Million viewers and it was heavily promoted by Disney. The song first broke into MTV when a viewer requested it on the popular show ''[[Total Request Live]]''. The catchy beat and the video immediately became a massive success and it debuted on the show the next day at #6. It soon hit the 50-day mark and retired, becoming the first ever Disney video to do so.

==Music video==

The video shows Hilary singing from a rooftop with scenes from ''[[The Lizzie McGuire Movie]]'' accompanying it.

The music video was directed by [[Elliott Lester]] and shot in downtown Los Angeles. The video shows Duff singing from a rooftop; this is inter-cut with scenes of street scenes of skipping, break dancing and crowds running, as well as waist shots of extras mouthing the words. Two distinct versions of the video exist; the one includes scenes from ''The Lizzie McGuire Movie'' while the other does not.

==Commercial performance==

The video did not do well in terms of sales and managed to grasp a sale of only 760,235 which many call impressive for a video debut.

The single debuted on the Australian [[ARIA Charts|ARIA Singles Chart]] at number forty in week twenty-six of 2003, and it peaked at number fourteen in its twelfth week, remaining on the chart for sixteen weeks. It was a number one hit on all children Airplay Charts. It was popular on The ABC Chart where it stayed at number one for 11 weeks and also hit number one in charts such as TRL and Much!. It peaked at number 14 in Australia, 20 in the Netherlands and 15 in New Zealand and made it into the World Singles Top 100 at an impressive #21 and peaked at #7 there.
