== Carriera nel wrestling ==
Dopo aver lasciato i [[Calgary Stampeders]] iniziò a praticare lo sport di famiglia sotto i duri allenamenti del padre [[Rocky Johnson]]. [[Pat Patterson]], dirigente della [[WWE|World Wrestling Federation]], notò il talento del ragazzo e decise di portarlo nella sua palestra, dove fece due incontri di prova contro [[Steve Lombardi]] e [[Chris Candido]]. Questo bastò al dirigente, che decise di portarlo in WWF, dove firmò un contratto, ma la federazione non lo ritenne ancora pronto e quindi lo mandarono alla [[United States Wrestling Association]] ad allenarsi.
Nell'estate del 1996, sotto il nome di Flex Cavana, assieme a Bart Saywer, riuscì a conquistare due volte l'[[USWA World Tag Team Championship]]. Questo bastò per convincere la WWF, che decise di puntare su di lui.

Per [[Vince McMahon]] e la WWF le cose stavano volgendo al peggio, con l'infortunio di [[Triple H]] che aveva segnato la fine della sua fazione con [[Steve Austin (wrestler)|Steve Austin]] e la guerra con l'[[The Alliance|Alliance]], l'unione di wrestler provenienti dalla [[Extreme Championship Wrestling]] e dalla [[World Championship Wrestling]].
