[[1888年]]、ドイツ・[[ヴェストファーレン]]地方の[[プレッテンベルク]]でカトリックの家に生まれた。[[フンボルト大学ベルリン|ベルリン大学]]、[[ルートヴィヒ・マクシミリアン大学ミュンヘン|ミュンヘン大学]]、[[ストラスブール大学]]などで学び、[[1916年]]、''Der Wert des Staates und die Bedeutung des Einzelnen''（『国家の価値と個人の意義』）で教授資格取得。同年、兵役につき、またセルビア人女性と結婚。
[[ライン・フリードリヒ・ヴィルヘルム大学ボン|ボン大学]]、[[ベルリン商科大学]]、[[ケルン大学]]で教授を歴任した後、[[国家社会主義ドイツ労働者党|ナチス]]政権が成立した[[1933年]]から[[1945年]]まで、ベルリン大学教授。
