is a Japanese street racing manga series written and illustrated by Shuichi Shigeno. It was serialized in Kodansha's ja manga magazine Weekly Young Magazine from 1995 to 2013, with the chapters collected into 48 ja volumes. The story focuses on the world of illegal Japanese street racing, where all the action is concentrated in the mountain passes and rarely in cities or urban areas, and with the drifting racing style emphasized in particular. Professional race car driver and pioneer of drifting Keiichi Tsuchiya helped with editorial supervision. The story is centered on the prefecture of Gunma, more specifically on several mountains in the Kantō region and in their surrounding cities and towns. Although some of the names of the locations the characters race in have been fictionalized, all of the locations in the series are based on actual locations in Japan.

Initial D has been adapted into several anime television and original video animations series by OB Studio Comet, Studio Gallop, Pastel, A.C.G.T and SynergySP. A live action film by Avex and Media Asia was released in 2005. Both the manga and anime series were initially licensed for English-language distribution in North America by Tokyopop (2002–2009). However, the anime license has since been picked up by Funimation (now Crunchyroll), while the manga was relicensed by Kodansha USA in 2019.
Avex has released the anime in several parts called Stages. One noticeable feature is that it uses Eurobeat music as background music in race scenes.

By April 2021, Initial D had over 55 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling manga series in history.

<!--The AE86 was in production between 1983 and 1987. As the manga mentions that the AE86 being a "10-year-old" car. According to the anime, the first episode takes places in the summer of 1996-->
Takumi Fujiwara is a high school student working part-time at a gas station in Gunma Prefecture alongside his friend Itsuki Takeuchi and their supervisor, Koichiro Iketani, leader of the local Akina Speed Stars racing team. Unbeknownst to them, Takumi has spent years honing his driving skills while making early morning tofu deliveries for his father Bunta in their aging Toyota Sprinter Trueno (AE86).

The racing scene in Gunma is disrupted when the Red Suns, a formidable team from Mount Akagi led by Ryosuke Takahashi, challenge the Speed Stars to a downhill race on Mount Akina. After witnessing the Red Suns' superior performance, the Speed Stars grow demoralized. Later that night, Keisuke Takahashi, the team's second-in-command driving a high-powered Mazda RX-7, is unexpectedly defeated by a mysterious Sprinter Trueno. Investigations point to Bunta as the driver, but when Iketani crashes during practice and begs for his help, Bunta declines before secretly arranging for Takumi to race in his place. Utilizing an unorthodox "gutter run" technique—placing the car's wheels in the road's drainage channels to maintain speed through hairpin corners—Takumi soundly defeats Keisuke.
Background
<!--The AE86 was in production between 1983-87. As the manga mentions that the AE86 being a "10-year-old" car. According to the anime, the first episode takes places in the summer of 1996-->

The victory establishes Takumi as the "Legendary Eight-Six of Akina", attracting challengers from across the region. Though initially indifferent, Takumi gradually develops a passion for racing. His skills are tested when he faces the Emperors, a team specializing in Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions. Outmatched by their superior machinery, Takumi loses to their leader, Kyoichi Sudo, and blows his engine in the process. The Red Suns intervene, defeating the Emperors and preserving Gunma's racing reputation. Bunta replaces the AE86's engine, and with guidance from friends, Takumi refines his technique. He later graduates from high school but continues racing, defeating rivals such as Wataru Akiyama in a Toyota Levin and avenging his loss against Kyoichi on the latter's home course, the Nikko Irohazaka. He also overcomes the son of Bunta's old rival, who drives a Toyota MR2 (SW20). A personal crisis arises when his girlfriend Natsuki Mogi is kidnapped, leading to a dramatic rescue at Lake Akina during winter, though their relationship eventually ends amicably.
Set in the late 1990s, it follows the adventures of Takumi Fujiwara (Who has the nickname "Tak" in the English adaptations), an eighteen year old teenager who helps his father run a tofu shop by delivering every morning to a hotel over Mount Akina in Gunma Prefecture with his father's Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-APEX. Having driven the mountain pass every morning for five years before his first race, Takumi's racing skill is highly developed.

Seeking greater challenges, Takumi joins Project D, an expeditionary racing team founded by Ryosuke and Keisuke Takahashi, aiming to prove himself as the fastest driver in Japan. The team faces numerous opponents, including skilled racers from Todo Racing School, the Northern Saitama Alliance, and the underhanded Tsuchisaka Lancer Evolution team. During this time, Takumi is humbled when his father, driving a Subaru Impreza WRX STI, defeats him, forcing him to adapt to four-wheel-drive dynamics. He also develops a relationship with Mika Uehara, while Ryosuke confronts a bitter rival tied to a past tragedy.
In mountian pass racing, power is not the key to winning. Balance, skill, techinques are what is need to win. Mountian pass racing, is divided into two concepts, either Downhill or Hillclimb (Uphill). NA (Non aspiration) cars have the advantage on the Downhill but Turbo equipped cars have more power going Uphill.
The story begins with a racer named Keisuke Takahashi from a neighboring area (the Akagi Redsuns) practices on Akina early morning. As he is practicing on the Downhill, a mysterious Trueno comes racing down fast from the top of the mountian and soon catches up to Keisuke. Determined to uphold his pride as a racer, Keisuke will not let the Trueno pass. But with an amazing display of drifting skills, the Trueno overtakes Keisuke, in his highly tuned Mazda RX-7, and disappears. Shakened by this experience, Keisuke is bent on revenge.

Project D's campaign culminates in a climactic race against Shinji Inui of Team Sidewinder. Despite blowing his engine mid-race, Takumi coasts backward across the finish line to secure victory. He retires the AE86 from competition, opting to restore it gradually. Ryosuke disbands Project D, revealing the meaning behind its name and shifting focus to mentoring new drivers. Keisuke pursues professional racing, while Takumi resumes tofu deliveries in his father's Subaru.

18 years old, Takumi Fujiwara is the son of Bunta Fujiwara, the owner of a tofu shop in his hometown Akina. He hardly shows much emotion on his face. His Best friend is Itsuki Takeuchi, who is a racing fan.

Manga
Takumi works part-time at a gas station with Itsuki, along with Iketani, who is a member of the local racing team, the Akina Speed Stars. In the first few episodes, both Itsuki and Iketani think that Takumi is totally ignorant about cars and racing, judging by Takumi's statements on his lack of interest on the subject.

The only one who suspects that Takumi has a great deal of knowledge on cars and racing techniques is the owner of the gas station, Yuuichi, as seen in the episode where Takumi discusses the drifting technique with Iketani and Itsuki. In fact, Takumi has far more experience with downhill racing than Iketani and Itsuki, as Takumi has been driving his father's AE86 Trueno since 5 years ago (in his first year of junior high school), delivering tofu to a hotel at 4 a.m. every day.

Anime
Takumi's father, Bunta Fujiwara, is in fact the original legendary driver of an AE86 who holds the record of the fastest time of downhill racing at Akina. Bunta has a unique way of training his son to drive; every morning when Takumi has to go on his tofu delivery route, Bunta will give Takumi a cup of water. The cup of water is placed in the drink holder; Takumi must not spill even a drop of it while he is driving.

Avex has released the anime in several parts called Stages. A recurrent feature of the anime is its extensive usage of Eurobeat as background music in race scenes, especially by Italian singers.
Takumi's driving technique is regarded among the best in Akina; the very fact that he has managed to win races against more powerful cars with his AE86 Trueno is testament to his driving skills.

Following Second Stage in 2000, Initial D Extra Stage was aired as a spinoff to the original series. This story focused on the all-female Impact Blue team of Usui Pass and their point of view of the recent events of Second Stage and the upcoming Third Stage movie. This was followed by Extra Stage 2 in 2008, which look at the relationship between Impact Blue's Mako Sato and Iketani of the SpeedStars (following on from the original side-story in the manga).
One of Takumi's friends, Iketani works at a local gas station with both Takumi and Itsuki. Itsuki admires him, as Iketani is leader of the local racing team, the Akina Speed Stars. Iketani drives a Nissan S13 Silvia. At first, Iketani thinks that the Speed Stars are the best drivers in Akina but later his boss Yuuichi tells Iketani of the mysterious driver of an AE 86 who was the fastest driver in his time, and that he suspects that the driver is the owner of the local tofu shop.

Like in the manga, Tokyopop changed elements of the anime to suit Western audiences. As well as changing the names and using western slang, the company also changed the anime's music from the series' staple eurobeat tracks to originally developed tracks of rap and hip-hop via Stu Levy (DJ Milky), the Tokyopop CEO and an in-house musician.

In 2006, Funimation announced that it would be distributing the DVDs of the anime (since Tokyopop's original distributor went bankrupt). This new distribution was marked by slightly revised packaging and two box sets corresponding to the licensed seasons Tokyopop had dubbed, although the DVDs themselves were exactly the same as the original Tokyopop release.

*Wangan Midnight, another car racing-themed manga produced by Michiharu Kusonoki, focusing on highway racing in Tokyo's Bayshore Route

Notes
He is skilled but his downfall is his throttle control. He is very good at acceleration and is known for his grip drving philosophy. Even since he was beaten by a White Skyline, he has always thought grip driving techniques are faster than the weak drifting techniques.

A member of the Night Kids, Shingo drives a red Civic EG-6. Shingo is a dangerous driver; not because of his driving skills, but because he races dangerously - Shingo will nudge his rival's car in order to make him lose control, or that he will challenge another driver to a 'gum tape death match'-each driver is to have his right hand taped to the steering wheel for the duration of the race. He also has been seen undermining Takeshi's leadership.

He has won many races driving for Emperor against other teams, including against Takeshi Nakazato of the Night Kids.

After defeating various teams in Gunma, the Emperor team then set their sights on the Akina Speed Stars, aiming to beat the infamous AE86 Trueno. Seiji volunteered to race for the Emperor team in his Evo IV against Takumi's AE86.

An old acquaintance of Ryousuke Takahashi of the Akagi Red Suns, Kyouichi is much like Ryousuke - he is a calm and composed driver, compared to his teammate Seiji. Eager to show Ryousuke that he and his team are the best, Kyouichi and the Emperor team goes on to beat various teams, including the Night Kids. He is also a graduate of the racing school, the Toudou Juku.

Another driver and current student of Toudou-Juku, Sakai is one of Daiki's friends and drives an Integra Type R. Sakai races against Keisuke of Project D in a hillclimb battle. He uses two techniques to race, first, using high speeds to enter a corner to get the other person to do the same, but Sakai can somehow fix his speed during the turn. The other trick is using fake brake lights. His face tenses up when he is racing to make him look like he is smiling, hence his nickname, Smily Sakai.

Toudou Racing School could not live with their team being completely annihilated by outsiders, so they invited Tachi, a graduate of the school who is now a professional racer, to have a rematch against Project D on Happogahara. Tachi took Ninomiya's EK9 and beat Takumi's downhill record in one try, without pushing the car to the limit. Tachi agreed to use the school's top car, the Demonstration EK9, at Happogahara, which is a course that consists of both downhill and hill climb sections. Tachi tuned the Civic the best he could to be able to compete with the FD3S on the straights, but surprisingly, Ryosuke decided to send out the AE86.
