() is the titular protagonist of the manga series Naruto, created by Masashi Kishimoto. He is a ninja from the fictional . As a boy, Naruto is ridiculed and ostracized on account of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox—a malevolent creature that attacked Konohagakure—that was sealed away in his body. Despite this, he aspires to become his village's leader, the Hokage, in order to receive their approval. His carefree, optimistic, and boisterous personality enables him to befriend other Konohagakure ninja, as well as ninja from other villages. Naruto appears in the series's films and in other media related to the franchise, including video games and original video animations (OVA), as well as the sequel Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, where he is the Hokage, and his son, Boruto Uzumaki, is the protagonist.
Naruto Uzumaki is the main character of the anime and manga series Naruto.

When creating Naruto for the initial part of the series, Kishimoto kept the character "simple and stupid" while giving him many attributes of an ideal hero. Kishimoto gave Naruto a dark side by adding tragedy to the character's past. He has revised Naruto's image many times, providing the character with simple clothes to fit the young demography. Kishimoto changed his design for Part II of the storyline, which starts two-and-a-half years after Part I. Naruto is voiced by Junko Takeuchi in the original animated series and Maile Flanagan in the English adaptations.
The surname "Uzumaki" is a pun to "spiral" (渦巻). While "Uzumaki" refers more to a three-dimensional spiral, like a whirlpool or vortex, a more accurate translation for spiral would be 'Rasen'. The Konoha leaf symbol is drawn with an arrow attached to a spiral, the seal on his abdomen is a spiral, the symbol on his jacket's back and shoulders is a spiral, and one of his attacks is Rasengan, which means "Spiraling Sphere". "Uzumaki" can also mean "whirlpool" in reference to the Naruto whirlpool (鳴門の渦潮), named after the city of Naruto.

Merchandise based on Naruto includes figurines and keychains. Naruto's character development has been praised by anime and manga publications and has drawn scholarly attention. Although some initially saw him as a typical manga and anime protagonist comparable to those in other shōnen manga, others have praised his personality and character development as he avoids stereotypes typically seen in similar media. The character has also been the subject of research in literature, making him stand out in fiction based on his traits and growth.
Naruto can mean "maelstrom", and is also the name for a sliced stick of Kamaboko with a pink whirlpool design in the middle that is used as a topping for Ramen (Naruto's favorite food). The Japanese sometimes use it as a nickname for the commercial at (@).

Creation and conception
October 10, Naruto's birthday, was "Taiiku no hi" (Health and Sports Day) in Japan when his character was conceived - a holiday full of physical activity fit for a hyperactive kid. The holiday, however, was moved to the second Monday of October during 1999.
Original concept and influences
During the 1990s, new manga author Masashi Kishimoto sought to write a one-shot chapter that would feature Naruto as a chef, but this version never made it to print. Kishimoto originally wanted to make Naruto a child who could transform into a fox, so he created a one-shot of Naruto for the summer 1997 issue of Akamaru Jump magazine based on the idea. When comparing both the Naruto one-shot and his other work, Karakuri, Kishimoto realized that the former's title character was more appealing than the lead of Karakuri. Kishimoto reflects that Naruto's "honest" smile was well received in contrast to the sly look the main character from Karakuri had. Following the success of another one-shot, Mario, Kishimoto started working on the Naruto series, where he wanted to reuse the title character from his earlier one-shot. Kishimoto wrote the first two chapters to show his appeal to the readers and then focus on the other protagonists despite difficulties. Following the second chapter, Kishimoto introduced the other protagonists, but with bad relationships, including with Sasuke Uchiha and Naruto's constant rejected affections for Sakura Haruno. The manga story was planned to show Naruto's coming-of-age through multiple fights, and he looked forward to seeing the conclusion.

For the serialized version, Kishimoto incorporated traits he felt made an ideal hero in the creation of Naruto: a straightforward way of thinking, a mischievous side, and attributes possessed by Goku from the Dragon Ball franchise, aiming to keep Naruto "simple and stupid". Although Goku was a major influence to Naruto, Kishimoto was more attracted by Dragon Ball character Krillin, as he comes across as more human than the protagonist for displaying flaws that made the readers easier to accept in a similar fashion to his mentor Iruka Umino. Kishimoto avoided modeling him after anyone in particular, instead conceiving of him as naïve with a dark side resulting from his harsh past. Despite this, he is always optimistic, a trait Kishimoto said makes this character unique. By and large, Naruto's personality is childish; the creator tried to convey this trait in his illustrations. Kishimoto notes the cover of volume 10 as an example of this, where Kishimoto depicts Naruto mimicking a turtle as a child might do. Naruto was Kishimoto's first published manga, and he focused on making Naruto's facial expressions consistent in difficult situations. He commented, "It's rather awkward to talk about what makes Naruto appealing to audiences, but I think his being a knucklehead gives him an appeal". He believed it was Naruto's losses that made readers identify with him, although he wanted Naruto not to feel defeated again, which was his primary aim when writing the series. Kishimoto has said that Naruto's burning desire to be a ninja was based on his own ambition to succeed as a manga artist. As the series went on, Kishimoto wrote the older incarnations of Naruto to be naïve idealists due to how Naruto was written to continuously avoid repeating previous mistakes. Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of the manga series, stated in a recent interview with the US Shonen Jump that his childhood was like that of Naruto's years while he was enrolled in the Academy.

In the original Japanese versions of Naruto, Naruto often ends his sentences with the addendum "-ttebayo" (which achieves an effect similar to ending a sentence with "you know?" in English). Kishimoto wanted to give Naruto a childlike catchphrase, and "dattebayo" came to mind; he believed that the phrase complemented Naruto's character and served as a verbal tic that portrayed him in a brattish manner. Throughout the first episodes of the English dub version, "dattebayo" and "-ttebayo" were replaced with the phrase "Believe it!", both to mirror the effect and to match the character's lip movements, although later in the English dub, Naruto stopped saying "Believe it!" and the phrase was replaced with "You know?".
Naruto consistently ranked in the top two (taking first place twice) in the first five official Shonen Jump character popularity polls. However, in the sixth character poll, he ranked in #4.

Background
Naruto was born on October 10, but not much is known beyond that. His parentage remains a mystery, as do any other family ties he may have had. As an infant, the spirit of the Kyubi (nine-tailed demon fox), who had attacked the village of Konoha, was sealed within Naruto's body by the Fourth Hokage of Konoha.

Development
The villagers of Konoha harbored a fierce hatred for the young child, since he bore the spirit of the demon who decimated their once peaceful village, in spite of the Fourth Hokage's wish that Naruto be seen as a hero who contained the demon. He was shunned by his fellow villagers and their children, his classmates, leaving Naruto a confused and lonely child.

After fans likened Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura to the three main characters from the Harry Potter fantasy books, Kishimoto noted that both trios began their careers in a classroom, though he added that the similarity was unintentional. During the series's publication, Kishimoto married and had children. This influenced how he viewed Naruto's character. Naruto met his parents and learned of their sacrifices in order to help him to control the Fox inside him so that he could protect their world. As a result, Naruto appreciated his life more and learned that his parents loved him, something the author wanted the character to feel based on his own experience as a father. In the first chapters of the series, Kishimoto did not conceive the idea that Naruto would be the son of Minato Namikaze. However, as time passed on, the manga author made touches to Minato's face shown in the Hokage Mountain in Konoha to make them more similar to Naruto with an emphasis on their spiky hairs. However, in order to reduce too many similarities, Kushina Uzumaki's character was made to look like Naruto's face.

Out of all the student-teacher relationships Kishimoto has created in the Naruto series, the one between Naruto and Jiraiya is his favorite. Right before Jiraiya's death in his fight against Pain in his last moments, he discovers the origin of Pain's multiple bodies and uses his last forces to send that message as a piece of advice to Naruto so that Naruto could defeat him in his place. This arc was the most difficult one to write; he felt this because Naruto truly forgave his enemy. Instead of having the protagonist kill the enemy he hates, as it happens in other series, Kishimoto found the idea of the two characters interacting and settling their differences more challenging. This had a major impact on the writer, and he decided to have Naruto forgive Sasuke during their final fight in a similar manner as he interacted with Nagato. Kishimoto felt the need to create a story arc that would emphasize the tragedy of wars, leading to the final arc, which would include a war. The principal reason for this was a significant difference between the two main characters, Naruto who had no knowledge of wars, and Sasuke who was a victim of one; his entire clan had been annihilated to avoid a potential civil war. As a result, Kishimoto created Nagato as a war victim who would kill Jiraiya, and act as Naruto's nemesis so he would understand the tragedy that Sasuke had experienced. As a result, Naruto's coming-of-age would have been completed in this arc and the final arc, where Naruto deals with world war and develops a vision of the shinobi world as well as how he should handle the conflict.
Fortunately, Naruto was befriended by his compassionate ninja instructor, a Chunin named Iruka Umino. Though Iruka's own parents perished at the hands of the Kyubi, Iruka didn't blame Naruto for their deaths. Instead, Iruka accepted Naruto and empathized with the boy's desire to be accepted, since he too once had the same desire. He may have been the first person to believe in Naruto, and has made a lasting impact on Naruto himself. It is through Iruka's presence as Naruto's only family figure that Naruto learns to overcome his sadness.

In the 2015 film, Boruto: Naruto the Movie, Kishimoto developed Boruto and Naruto's relationship from his relationship with his sons. In portraying the adult Naruto, Kishimoto did not want to make the character give a cool impression in contrast to his younger days as a war hero because Naruto being a strong father figure to Boruto would be too boring for the narrative. Similarly, Chengxi Huang wanted to properly display Naruto's facial expression during this scene, stating that while Naruto has grown up ever since his introduction, his gentle smile was the same. Manga author Mikio Ikemoto claimed the scene in which Naruto helps his son to create a large Rasengan was his favorite at the time of drawing Boruto, as across this moment, he had to draw Naruto's past to the point he "felt the weight of NARUTO series and its long history behind it."
Personality
Before graduating from the Academy, Naruto was craving for acknowledgement. He would play pranks all around the village in an attempt to be recognized by its inhabitants. This included, but was not limited to, painting graffiti on the monument depicting the first four Hokages. He would also tell everyone who doubted him that he would one day become Hokage. As he tells Iruka (and pretty much everyone else), he wishes to become Hokage in order to be recognized by those around him. Even after graduating, Naruto is still determined to be recognized, and becomes the "Number One Loudest, Unpredictable, Hyperactive Knuckleheaded Ninja" of Konoha, as described by Kakashi Hatake.

Rivalry
Naruto's exuberant personality and fiery desire for self-improvement strongly impacts the lives of those around him. At beginning of the series, Naruto befriends Konohamaru, the grandson of the Third Hokage, and it is through his brief tutelage that Konohamaru learns that the path to success is through plenty of hard work. Despite his headstrong nature, Naruto is a clever prankster who overcomes his opponents through a combination of willpower, dumb luck (though as Kakashi himself states, luck is very important), and clever diversions.
Early in the making of the series, Kishimoto had poor faith in the manga as he believed the series was lacking something to become popular. After being recommended by his editor to give the protagonist a rival, Kishimoto wrote Sasuke with influences from Takehiko Inoue's Slam Dunk manga, which was famous for dealing with rivalries. When first introducing Sasuke, Kishimoto wrote him as a rival who never noticed Naruto. However, as the series continued, Naruto became strong enough to finally be recognized by Sasuke as a rival. He also intended for both of them to be brother-like due to the fact that both characters suffered loneliness, something that made the readers relate to them, as he noted through fan letters. By Part I's ending, the bond between Naruto and Sasuke was weakened as a result of their fight but still expected from the time when Sasuke accepted Naruto as an equal. Kishimoto compared Sasuke and Naruto to the concept of yin and yang because of their notable differences. When one of the two progressed, Kishimoto made sure the other did too. During the climax of Part I, Naruto and Sasuke engage in a mortal fight, which was directed by Atsushi Wakabayashi from Pierrot. In an interview, the director claimed that the animation was based on a journey to Lake Mashu from Hokkaido to come up with new ideas. Wakabayashi aimed for the characters to move stilted based on storyboards he made, leading to entertaining sequences. When Naruto became berserk due to the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's influence, Norio Matsumoto aimed to make Naruto behave like a beast, with Wakabayashi aiming to make Naruto look like an equal to his rival. The staff was inspired by 1970s series, like the boxing series Ashita no Joe, most notably its lead character, Joe Yabuki, who was often seen as an underdog the audience rooted for. However, the team still worked carefully to make the two ninjas be equals without overpowering each other.

Naruto has a great sense of humor, albeit somewhat perverted in some cases, and is usually all smiles and laughs around (though, at times, he smiles to hide whatever's bothering him so no one worries about him; those who are closest to him see right through it). Outside his world, he's just an ordinary, loud, hotheaded kid with a fierce will and a knack for getting into trouble.

The final fight between Sasuke and Naruto was considered one of the biggest challenges by the staff from Pierrot, as it took an entire month to adapt it from the manga. Director Hiroyuki Yamashita elected himself in charge of the battle, which left most of the anime members relieved due to his experience. For the scene, Pierrot received assistance from CyberConnect2, who had already adapted this battle through the fighting game Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4. There was a need to make every movement in the fight look realistic, giving Sasuke a scary look as well as the hair movement in order to express the idea of both fighters willing to do anything to kill each other, which confused some due to Naruto's wish to avoid this fate. The final clash between Sasuke's Chidori and Naruto's Rasengan moves involved references from other scenes of the series to give the viewer a bigger emotional impact. The staff noted that following this fight, Sasuke's face became calmer despite his initial look, giving room to explore his redemption. A symbolism Kishimoto used in the series finale following the final battle was Naruto returning Sasuke his original bandana, representing how their bonds are tied again and no longer having a reason to kill each other.
One of Naruto's hobbies is gardening, even though Naruto was beaten in episode 20 for not knowing the difference between weeds and herbs. He is the one who gives Kakashi Mr. Ukki, the plant seen on Kakashi's windowsill (Kishimoto once described how he had the same plant for a while until he fed it undiluted plant food).

Love interests
In the Japanese versions, Naruto often ends his sentences with "dattebayo" or "(verb)-ttebayo", and as such Naruto has a unique style of speech. In the Japanese language, an ending can be added with no meaning to make the tone sound more tough, childish, girlish, or many other changes depending on the many existing endings. "-ttebayo", which is not a well-known ending, has no literal meaning and cannot be translated, but carries the connotations of the speaker being uncultured, brusque, and seeming tougher than they really are. fact In the English anime and video games, he often says "Believe it!" to fit with the mouth flaps of "-ttebayo".
Naruto's romantic partner was decided during the early stages of the manga. Since Hinata Hyuga always respected Naruto, even before the series's beginning, even before his academy mentor Iruka Umino, Kishimoto felt they were meant to be. This angered his wife, who wanted Naruto to marry Sakura Haruno. When Sakura was introduced, Kishimoto did not think of her as Naruto's future wife: he saw them as being friends and teammates, although once Hinata had appeared, the author thought of forming a love triangle between the three characters. He later regretted the love triangle as he considered Naruto a fighting series with little focus on romance, and he reiterated that "[i]t was all about Naruto and Hinata getting married from an early stage."

When seeing the staff's work to focus a film on Naruto's relationship with Hinata, The Last: Naruto the Movie, Kishimoto decided to oversee the project. Nevertheless, he enjoyed seeing Naruto and Hinata's romantic scenes that he did not write. In regard to Naruto's rank, which remains as the lowest one, Genin, due to Naruto spending most of his time in Part II fighting and training, Kishimoto decided Naruto would skip the following ranks to become the Hokage, which he felt was appealing. In the making of The Last: Naruto the Movie, Hinata makes a red scarf for Naruto. == Naruto and the Kyubi ==

As the host (known as a Jinchuriki) of the Kyubi, both Naruto's body and mind (occasionally) are influenced by it. Physically, Naruto has some of the Kyubi's characteristics, such as whisker-like marks on his cheeks and larger than normal canines. He also has increased stamina and healing ability, which allows him to recover from major injuries within a day and minor injuries within a few seconds. Mentally, Naruto remains largely unaffected, save for a few animalistic traits that slip through, such as his tendency to leap between trees on all fours. Since the Kyubi was sealed inside Naruto since birth, it is unclear just what parts of his personality it has had an effect on; however, it could explain Naruto's devilish side for pulling pranks to gain attention, as well as his stubbornness to never back down from a challenge. (In Japanese mythology, a kitsune is said to often play pranks on people, and foxes are also known to be very resourceful during a crisis.) These traits become more pronounced as he draws upon the Kyubi's chakra.

Screenwriter Maruo Kyozuka said that he wanted to depict a love triangle between Naruto, Hinata, and Toneri Otsutsuki in the film. Although Naruto is initially clueless about Hinata's feelings for him, during the film, he begins to acknowledge and respond to them. Hinata's character was also developed in the film, with Kyozuka saying that she had to put aside her feelings for Naruto to accept Toneri's proposal so she could find Hanabi. During this scene, Kyozuka wanted to depict Naruto at his lowest after his rejection by Hinata. He then returned Naruto to his brave self, with the character resolving to continue his mission regardless of the cost. Animator Chengxi Huang, who worked on multiple Naruto series, took a liking to this couple ever since he started working on Naruto Shippuden, often aiming to draw scenes of the two and most notably a scene from the final arc when Hinata slaps Naruto to calm him following the death of Neji Hyuga. In the making of the film, he thanked Kishimoto for accepting to do The Last, where the couple was explored furthermore. He looked at their adult selves as an appealing married couple but had to remove a video he made that received backlash for being inappropriate for the demographic.
The Kitsune (狐) is a well-known character in Japanese myth, and the influence behind not only the Demon Fox, a.k.a. the Kyubi, but many other reincarnations in modern Japanese culture. It likes to play tricks and pranks on people, and on occasions transforms itself into a beautiful woman and seduces a man (obviously the inspiration for Sexy Technique). Also, Kitsune are known to keep their promises, a trait Naruto has, his nindo is 'I never go back on my word'. It should also be noted that every time Naruto loses control and is overwhelmed by the Kyubi's chakra, he seemingly gains another "tail" of chakra. This stems from the Japanese myth that the more tails a kitsune has, the more powerful it is, with nine tails usually being the limit.

Design
Naruto's normal chakra level is considered high for a ninja of his level, partially because of the Kyubi. Even without directly drawing upon it, a small amount of the Kyubi's chakra is always mixed with his own. His body instinctively rejects the bulk of it due to the damage it would cause. As such, he is naturally suited to jutsu that use a large amount of chakra, such as his signature technique: Shadow Clone Technique. While most ninja are only capable of creating a few clones safely, due to the jutsu's hazard of equally dividing the user's chakra among the clones, Naruto is able to create upwards of one thousand while maintaining a decent supply of chakra in each one.
Although a real ninja wears blue to be inconspicuous, Kishimoto gave Naruto an orange jumpsuit to fit the shōnen genre. His wardrobe is based on clothing that Kishimoto wore when he was younger. According to him, a pre-existing design would not have made Naruto unique, whereas something original would have made him too distinctive. Because Naruto is associated with spirals in terms of objects he uses, the designer incorporated swirl patterns into the costume. Initial illustrations depicted Naruto in boots, but Kishimoto replaced these with sandals because he enjoys drawing toes. The goggles Naruto used to wear were replaced with a hitai-ite, or shinobi headband, because they were too time-consuming to draw. One of the most difficult design choices was the color palette of Naruto's outfit. The orange in his costume makes Naruto pop, and the blue parts are complementary. Kishimoto apologized to the anime staff for Naruto's design, as he considered it too difficult to animate.

Kishimoto was satisfied with his character having blond hair and blue eyes, something rarely seen in Japanese anime or manga. This also appealed to an international readership, something the editor of the American magazine Shonen Jump has noted. Of all his series' characters, Kishimoto most identified with Naruto. When asked why Naruto's favorite food was ramen instead of kitsune udon, Kishimoto said that he himself likes eating ramen. He also gave him a red cape with black flames at the bottom when fighting Pain, a member of the Akatsuki. He drew Naruto's forehead protector wider to make his eyebrows easier to draw, something that had bothered him with his previous design. He also noted that Naruto's pants made the character look too childish. To remedy this, Kishimoto designed them to roll up, giving him a more mature appearance. He gave Naruto this look in order to make him stand out during action scenes.
This tremendous power is not without its disadvantages, however. When he first accesses it, Naruto is unable to retain control when using the Kyubi's chakra, allowing its innate rage and anger to take over his personality. Over time, Naruto gains more control over the Kyubi, allowing him to retain his personality while using its chakra. However, his degree of control is determined by the amount of chakra he draws upon and his emotional state. As he becomes more emotional and draws on more of the Kyubi's chakra, his own personality is gradually supplanted by the Kyubi's.

For the events of the film The Last: Naruto the Movie (2014) as well as the final episodes of Naruto: Shippuden, Naruto was given a young adult appearance. His hair was made shorter, while his height was expanded notably in contrast to his Part II design. He was given two different outfits, a casual look consisting of an orange shirt as well as a design consisting of a black shirt with orange pants specifically meant for his missions. Due to his growth, Naruto wears a different headband, while his new ninja appearance was created with the purpose of being able to carry weapons more easily. Nevertheless, both looks keep the character's spiralling logo that was carried from his late mother's gone group, the Uzumaki clan.

Naruto's state of mind coincides with his tailed transformation states, which are characterized by a fox-shaped shield of chakra surrounding Naruto. Naruto becomes more powerful with each "tail" the chakra shield grows, but also loses more of himself to the Kyubi. This is shown within his mind as the Kyubi drawing ever closer to him. At first, some of the Kyubi's chakra merely leaks through the bars. The amount of chakra increases as the Kyubi grows more dominant. By the time he reaches his four-tailed state, Naruto slips through the bars and into the Kyubi's grasp. Up to his three-tailed state, he remains in control, though somewhat more feral than normal. In his three-tailed state, the Kyubi chakra is intense enough to make people around Naruto feel pain, and Naruto has to fight the Kyubi for dominance. Once he reaches his four-tailed state, the Kyubi becomes dominant. In this state, which is the highest state Naruto has reached, Naruto's mind becomes mixed with the Kyubi's, causing the regular Naruto to fade out. The only thing Naruto can do is plead for the Kyubi to stop.

Voice actors
The chakra shield can act as a separate entity. This confuses opponents, and even the Sharingan has trouble following it. The shield can stretch and skew to many sizes and lengths, allowing Naruto to attack opponents from a distance. It can also create shock waves to repel opponents. In Naruto's four-tailed state, the chakra shield is intense enough to burn others and act as a potent poison. Additionally, Naruto gains the ability to mold the chakra to a much finer degree. In this state, he was able to create a ball of concentrated chakra to fire at an opponent. The chakra ball was powerful enough to break through three Rashomon gates without losing momentum.

In regard to Naruto's growth, Takeuchi was happy with the story and had hoped that Naruto would end up in a relationship with Hinata. Takeuchi was reminded of Naruto's late godfather, Jiraiya, when she read the script. She thought that although Naruto's declaration of love was the most important part of the character's growth, his true nature had not changed at that point. Satisfied with the story, Takeuchi thought that the audience would agree with her view. For the film Boruto: Naruto the Movie, Takeuchi was surprised with how Naruto has grown up ever since she first voiced him, not only in the idea of age or new job but also the fact that he has become a father. Even with all of its benefits, Naruto's human body can only handle so much of the Kyubi's chakra, as demon chakra is far more intense than human chakra. As he draws upon greater amounts of the Kyubi's chakra, his own body is weakened. In his four-tailed state, the Kyubi's chakra is so intense that it constantly burns Naruto's skin, causing him to bleed from every pore. This causes his blood to mix with the Kyubi's chakra, creating a black (or dark red, considering that such details are lost in black and white drawings) chakra shield. In addition to the constant damage, the Kyubi's chakra also constantly regenerates Naruto's damaged tissue. This repeated cycle of damage and repair severely weakens Naruto's cellular structure, shortening his overall lifespan in a manner similar to Tsunade's Genesis Regeneration jutsu.

Major Part I relationships
Plot of Naruto
Naruto's personality tends to inspire similar traits in those around him, and as such he has changed the worldviews of several people, mostly through his battles with them. During the Chunin exam in particular, Naruto forges several bonds with other participating Genin. Naruto's encounters during the Chunin exam are characterized by Naruto relating to or opposing to sentiments and outlooks on life, and it is through this relation that he makes many new friends (on three different occasions, by defeating his future friend in battle).

Synopsis
Naruto's own way of thinking is also strengthened by these encounters, particularly from his first real battle against Haku and Zabuza Momochi. Haku's sacrifice and Zabuza's initial lack of compassion in regards to it leads him to reject the idea of becoming an emotionless living weapon, the very definition of being a shinobi.

=== Gaara =Appearances==
In Naruto
Gaara, like Naruto, is the unwilling host of a demon, the one-tailed Shukaku. As such, Gaara had a similar childhood. Unlike Naruto, however, Gaara never had someone like Iruka to alleviate his loneliness. Instead, the one person who befriends Gaara eventually tries to kill him. This event leads Gaara to believe that his purpose in life is to kill everybody around him, so no one will be able to deny his existence. This is not helped by the fact that Gaara must always remain awake, lest Shukaku eat away at his personality. Naruto realizes that were it not for his own friends, he could have easily become like Gaara. During Naruto and Gaara's fight at the end of the Destruction of Konoha arc, Naruto explains to Gaara that he gets his strength from protecting those who he believes are important. This outlook, along with Naruto's unwillingness to be defeated, changes Gaara's outlook on life. He starts to value other people's lives, and he comes to consider Naruto his best friend. Gaara is profoundly affected by Naruto's words and decides to change. Gaara later goes on to become the Fifth Kazekage to protect his village.

Sakura Haruno
One of Naruto's most meaningful relationships in the series, Naruto's relationship with Sakura begins on rocky ground. At first, Sakura didn't think much of Naruto. She thought that he was full of hot air, as well as being completely undisciplined. However, after being a member of his team for a while, she began to see that she was completely wrong about Naruto. After seeing Naruto improve greatly, while she got nowhere in comparison, she recognized his dream as more than just a childish fantasy. Naruto had a crush on Sakura during the entirety of Part I, and still does in Part II, but his feelings weren't returned. Throughout the first part of the story, they become much better friends and teammates, and Naruto saves Sakura's life on several occasions. Also, Sakura admitted to herself that Naruto's unwillingness to give up also inspired her to try to become stronger.

Part II
After the timeskip, Naruto and Sakura seemed to have a better and closer relationship than they had in the first part of the series. She and Temari were also the first people that Naruto actually told about the Kyubi within him. Ever since, Sakura seems to understand Naruto better, and she has become increasingly concerned about Naruto's well-being, since she knows that he is one of the biggest targets of Akatsuki. She also cries for Naruto on several occasions, especially after learning that if the Kyubi is removed from his body, Naruto will die.
After his two and a half years of training, Naruto returns to Konoha (the Leaf Village) and begins to deal more actively with the Akatsuki by saving Gaara from their clutches. To fight them, Naruto trains with Kakashi to infuse the Rasengan with his own wind-element chakra, creating the Wind Release: Rasenshuriken attack that proves instrumental in the downfall of the Akatsuki member Kakuzu. Despite being targeted by the Akatsuki, Naruto dedicates himself to finding and retrieving Sasuke, who eventually disposes of Orochimaru and starts acting on his vengeance-driven whims. Over time, though resisting the urge to use the creature's power, the Nine Tails's influence over him expands, and Naruto begins to lose his rationality as more chakra manifests in the form of tails to the point the Tailed Beast can take control of his body. During the Grass Country arc, Sakura stated that she feels terrible that the only things she can do for Naruto are so small by comparison of what he has done for her. However, Yamato stated that it doesn't matter what she does for Naruto, but the only thing that matters is the strength of the feelings she has for him (this is left for interpretation, as Naruto interrupts him).

Hinata Hyuga
While Naruto never has any previous problems with Hinata, her innate shyness prevented her from doing anything more than blushing and not saying anything when they spoke, which made him uncomfortable. Naruto states that he knows Hinata is a good person, but thinks she is timid and weird, regardless. He was (and still is) completely oblivious to the fact that she's extremely attracted to him. In episode 199, Naruto unknowningly uses a double entendre when asking Hinata for help. Instead of his actual meaning, both her and Sakura believe he's asking her out on a date. After Sakura angrily stated it was not an appropriate time for such things, and Hinata hesitated to answer, he decided to ask Neji instead, further confusing them.

In the Boruto series
Naruto never truly notices Hinata until the preliminaries of the Chunin exam, during Hinata's battle with Neji Hyuga. Hinata is part of the main house of the Hyuga clan and supposedly the heir to its leadership, but she is only an average ninja, while Neji is part of the branch house and recognized as a genius of his clan, but can never become its leader. As such, he takes out his frustration on Hinata, who doesn't give up despite being clearly outmatched against her genius cousin. During the fight, Neji berates her for her lack of ability, which inspires Naruto to cheer her on, since he knows what it's like to be underestimated. Hinata fights on because of his cheering, but loses anyway. Naruto is extremely overcome with emotion when he sees Hinata lose to Neji. He then vows that he will beat Neji. Even though Hinata lost, Naruto was able to inspire her to change, and she is able to become stronger later in the series. After the timeskip, Naruto gives Hinata a friendly greeting, much to her embarrassment (as she had been hiding from him trying to figure out what to say when he discovered her).
In the spin-off manga Naruto: The Seventh Hokage and the Scarlet Spring, Naruto and his allies go to defeat a new Akatsuki organization led by the so-called Uchiha known as Shin Uchiha, as Sasuke fears Kaguya's allies might try to attack them. In Boruto: Naruto the Movie (2015), which takes place after the series' epilogue, Naruto's Hokage status strains his relationship with his son Boruto as his duties often kept him from his family. After the preliminaries, Naruto is paired to fight against Neji Hyuga in the finals of the Chunin exam. When the chance comes, Naruto tells Neji to stop blaming everything on fate, challenging Neji's statements about how everything is predetermined. After Naruto defeats Neji, Naruto is able to convince him that fate isn't predetermined, and that destiny can be changed. Neji may never admit it, but he is thankful to Naruto for showing him a brighter part of life. Neji even admits that Naruto saved him from his own personal darkness, and they become good friends.

In Rock Leeother media
<!-- Do not turn this into a list of entries. Use general descriptions of Naruto and focus on how what he does in movie/games differs from the anime and manga -->
Naruto gradually bonds with Rock Lee, calling him "Bushy Brows" (ゲジマユ, "geji-mayu"). At first, the name is derisive, but later becomes affectionate. Rock Lee is a taijutsu expert who is incapable of using either ninjutsu or genjutsu. Faced with that limitation, Rock Lee compensates by training himself to be extremely skilled in taijutsu, and thus represents the ideal of hard work prevailing against all odds. During Lee's fight with the more powerful Gaara during the preliminary exams, Rock Lee refuses to give up, even trying to fight while unconscious and having a crushed arm and leg. Naruto deeply identifies with Lee because they are somewhat similar. Lee's concept of 'hard work' is something they've both had to do, and both met with numerous failures before getting any success. They both wish to achieve their goals, and they want to prove themselves to gain other people's respect. They even have similar rivals in Sasuke and Neji. Both possess powerful bloodline limits and are considered some of the top Genin in the village, while Naruto and Rock Lee are considered subpar. Naruto feels very sorry for Rock Lee after Gaara beats him. Later, when Gaara tries to make an attempt on Lee's life in the hospital, Naruto and Shikamaru stop Gaara from crushing Lee with his sand. Naruto and Shikamaru would have been forced to fight Gaara themselves if Might Guy hadn't arrived to visit Lee. Naruto is also happy for Lee when he is able to fight again and continue being a ninja.
As the series's title character, Naruto appears in every movie in the series. He typically appears as the lead character on a mission with comrades from Konohagakure. === Sasuke Uchiha ===
Perhaps Naruto's most defining relationship, the bond between him and Sasuke remains at the core of the series. The two are both rivals and friends, though more of the former than the latter. Their rivalry pushes them to outperform one another, which makes it a mutually beneficial relationship. The opinions of this greatly differ, however. While Naruto sees himself as an equal to Sasuke, or at least works his way up to that point, Sasuke sees himself as stronger than Naruto. As such, whenever Sasuke finds that Naruto is either catching up to him or surpassing him, Sasuke feels as if he's inferior or weak. This opinion is not helped by the fact that Naruto is usually responsible for their team's victories.

After the Chunin exams, Naruto's continued increase in strength makes Sasuke even more jealous (comparatively speaking, Naruto had progressed much more than Sasuke over the same length of time). Naruto's defeat of Gaara, who Sasuke stood no chance against even with his cursed seal, is what brings these feelings to the surface. This is compounded by the arrival of Sasuke's brother, Itachi. Not only is Itachi not the least bit interested in Sasuke, he is actually after Naruto; more specifically, the Kyubi, but Sasuke doesn't realize this. This, coupled with the staggering differences in their respective strengths and Sasuke's subsequent defeat, leads Sasuke to challenge Naruto to a fight.

The two go to the roof of the hospital, where each voices their opinion of their rivalry, with Naruto insisting they're equals while Sasuke thinks otherwise. Their battle is short, ending with each trying to use their most powerful attack on the other. Kakashi steps in to prevent them from injuring Sakura, who attempts to intervene. Kakashi deflects their attacks into adjacent water towers. At first, it appears as if Sasuke did more damage, but in reality Naruto did. While Sasuke does put a bigger dent in the front of his tower, Naruto actually blows out the back of the other, demonstrating that Naruto's strength had truly surpassed his. Though Kakashi tries to convince Sasuke to give up his quest for revenge, his defeat at the hands of the Sound Four leads him to defect to Orochimaru.

Reception
The Sound Four are held off by Naruto's friends so Naruto can reach Sasuke. Once he does, the two have a much more serious battle, during which they each bring out their respective "gifts", those being Naruto's Kyubi chakra and Sasuke's cursed seal. During the battle, Sasuke claims that he doesn't need any friends, as that does nothing to make him more powerful, since killing Itachi is his only goal. Naruto refuses to accept Sasuke's decision, as by his own admission Sasuke is like a brother to him and he can't bear to lose him to the twisted path of self-destruction he has chosen. This drives Naruto to draw upon the Kyubi's chakra to such a degree that he nearly overcomes Sasuke's Sharingan. As such, Sasuke finally acknowledges Naruto as an equal. In the end, the two use their most powerful attacks against each other once more, only this time enhancing the attacks with their respective gifts. They do not go through with their attacks, however. Naruto purposefully misses, instead scratching Sasuke's headband, and Sasuke doesn't kill Naruto because he doesn't want to become like Itachi (though this mentality seemingly changes in Part II).

Naruto's character has received mostly positive critical response in printed and online publications. Praise was given by Joseph Szadkowski of The Washington Times, who noted that Naruto "has become a pop-culture sensation". Naruto's character was analyzed by GameSpots Joe Dodson, who noted that despite having an "ideal" life, he still suffered from severe isolation, although he was praised for his optimistic personality by Carl Kimlinger of Anime News Network (ANN). Writers for Mania Entertainment labeled him a "good lead character" with good overall development despite certain problems at the beginning. Christina Carpenter of T.H.E.M. With Sasuke's successful defection, Naruto's main goal is to bring Sasuke back before Orochimaru can take him as his new host.

Writing for Popular Culture in Counseling, Psychotherapy, and Play-Based Interventions, Lawrence Rubin states that while Naruto has an optimistic and hyperactive personality, the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox (Kurama) within his body symbolizes his negative emotions. He comments that Naruto has a malevolent attitude when dealing with intense conflicts and emotions. He also states that Naruto would use Kurama's chakra for battles he can not handle with his own chakra. Rubin further notes that the more Naruto uses Kurama's chakra, the more he puts his comrades and himself in danger. Rubin feels the reason Naruto is a troublemaker is because some villagers avoid him and others mistreat him. He states that children growing up in the real world who have development issues can relate to his character. Rubin states that the search for acceptance and being acknowledged by his peers is what motivates Naruto to keep going until he reaches his life's goal, becoming the Hokage. Rubin feels that Naruto's fights with enemies who try to bring harm to the Leaf Village further motivate him to become a powerful shinobi and a "complete and mature person." Rubin concludes that Naruto's character development is similar to that of a modern American hero, the type who accidentally becomes better during a series and is able to build or restore peace.

Christopher A. Born, writing for DOAJ journal ASIANetwork Exchange, regards Naruto as a complex post-modern hero, showing "great heart." From Naruto's beginning, Born comments that the character is a nuisance, suggesting Naruto is the very definition of the word, given how he is characterized in the series, including how he interacts and his behavior. Born argues that Naruto as a whole shows Confucian values and that Naruto himself unsettles harmony in society. Amy Plumb, a PhD candidate at Macquarie University, states that Kishimoto used the mythology of the kitsune for Naruto's development throughout the series. She notes that at the beginning of the series, Naruto was a prankster and always causing trouble, the same as the kitsune. Plumb describes the Kyuubi (Demon) seal on Naruto's stomach as a catalyst for how he develops. Writing for Manga's Cultural Crossroads, Omote Tomoyuki compliments Naruto's character, saying that he has great ambition to achieve a tragic destiny. === New personality ===
In the second part of the story, after a two-and-a-half year time skip, Naruto shows physical growth, sports a new outfit, and appears to not only have increased in strength, speed, and techniques, but intelligence as well. Kakashi even said that Naruto has become more cunning. However, according to Tsunade, Naruto is also slowly adopting some of Jiraiya's perverted traits. During his apprenticeship under Jiraiya, Naruto was able to read the latest of the "Icha Icha" series written by Jiraiya, although when he presents a copy to Kakashi, he says he thought it was boring.

Analyzing Naruto's coming-of-age story, The Lawrentian found that Naruto's development embodies the idea of Bildungsroman, the idea of how important Naruto's growth across the narrative is to move on the arc. Due to lacking parenting as a result of his parents' age during his birth, Naruto's personality starts fragile. Unaware of them, Naruto seeks to accomplish his mother's wish of becoming a hero and leader of the village, the Hokage. While initially portrayed as a weak character, Naruto finds strength in his mentors, Kakashi and Jiraiya, as well as his connections with Sakura and Sasuke. As a result of losing Jiraiya, Naruto seeks to accomplish his mentor's wish of ending wars and the cycling of hatred, making Kishimoto capable of embodying the character more with the reader while maturing in the process. As a result, The Lawrentian finds that Naruto's character fills the concept of Bildungsroman, something other fictional characters fail to accomplish.
It seems Naruto's feelings for Sakura have matured. He does not seem to have a child-like crush anymore. They have a very easy time communicating with each other, despite the nearly three-year separation. They are capable of having a casual conversation together, and they seem to like spending time together. Naruto is now noticeably taller than Sakura and some of his other friends. (In Part I, he is made fun of for being shorter than her.)

Tejal Suhas Bagwe from Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment for the Degree of Masters of Arts in English describes Jiraiya's death as the "loss of innocence" Naruto goes through, paralleling his life with Gaara, Sasuke, and Madara. However, unlike these three characters who seek revenge and chaos for their losses, Naruto instead chooses another path derivative from these types of narratives, becoming more unique. Another aspect noted by the writer in regard to Naruto's character is how he becomes Kurama's companion despite the creature bearing hatred towards mankind for being used, resulting into multiple references to Japanese mythology based on its name and the new skills Naruto acquires when befriending the fox. Similarly, Anime News Network stated that thanks to Naruto's newfound pacifism when dealing with his quest of revenge and the rejection of violence, the story managed to become a "masterpiece".
It is when Team 7 was on the way to Sunagakure that Naruto revealed to Sakura and Temari that the Kyubi was sealed inside him. She sympathizes with him, as does Temari, who is very grateful to Naruto for the change in her little brother, Gaara.

Naruto was also analyzed in regards to his adult characterization. Midwest Book Review noted the love story between Naruto and Hinata from The Last to have been properly written enough to appeal to casual fans of romance. Antônio Guilherme Bernardes Galletti from the University of São Paulo notes Boruto: Naruto the Movie becomes complex when the protagonist learns of the shinobi code his father and master use, which was also compared to the samurais' bushido while developing a sense of individuality when deciding what to do with his life when growing up. Tata Ardiansyah from Universitas Islam Negeri said Pierrot expanded Naruto's family life in Boruto not only with the characters from the 2015 movie but also his new adopted son Kawaki, who grows to admire and love him despite his initial antiheroic characterization. Anime News Network also addressed how in Boruto, Naruto's adult characterization resulted in admiration from new characters such as Sarada, who wishes to succeed him as the leader of the village and protector of the younger ninjas. In "Through the Eyes of Child Soldiers: On War, Violence, and Trauma in Popular Entertainment Fictions", Benjamin Nickl compared Naruto and Boruto's dynamic to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, as the latter has not experienced the same war that Naruto felt in the original series. It is also shown that Sasuke's defection still affects Naruto and Sakura, and when the whole of Team 7 finally meets after two and a half years, Sasuke greets them, as he did when they became a team, with cold indifference, and says he doesn't care if he becomes Orochimaru's vessel as long as Itachi will die. He even attempts to kill Sakura and Naruto. Later, after Sasuke leaves with Orochimaru and Kabuto, Naruto and Sakura are clearly upset that he is no longer the Sasuke they knew.

Cultural New abilities impact
Naruto has displayed a few new abilities since the start of Part II. Sometime during his training with Jiraiya, Naruto accidentally transformed into a four-tailed form of the Kyubi without his remembering. In this form, Naruto loses all control of himself and cannot remember what happens during this state. He becomes an unrestrainable beast who attacks anyone he sees. Jiraiya claims that this is one of the only two times in his life when he nearly died – the first was an incident with Tsunade in which she beat him within an inch of his life for being a pervert. During Naruto's battle with Orochimaru, he gets angry to the point of turning into the four-tailed Kyubi. Orochimaru states that this form is powerful enough to actually kill him.

Naruto has greatly improved his ninjutsu and taijutsu post-timeskip, as well as becoming a much better tactician. He managed to catch Kakashi by surprise during his second bell test, and even used Kakashi's obsession to Icha Icha Paradise to his advantage. Kakashi even said that Naruto has become more cunning. Apparently, Naruto is starting to wield and become more skilled with weapons (other than regular kunai or shurikens), as seen in the Rescue Gaara arc.

Naruto has also developed a new version of the Rasengan, titled the Great Ball Spiraling Sphere, which is a more powerful version of the normal Rasengan. Recently, Kakashi has been training Naruto to alter the nature of his chakra, in order for Naruto to create a jutsu that is unique to him. Yamato has been helping by controlling the Kybui's chakra and building various structures for Naruto to train with. Though this normally takes a long time to do, there is a trick that speeds up the process. By creating one thousand clones of himself, Naruto can complete twenty years worth of training in just one week. Most ninja are unable to train using this method due to a lack of chakra and stamina, something Naruto doesn't need to worry about. Because the clones are linked to Naruto, he remembers everything they experience after they disperse. Naruto was ignorant of this fact until told by Kakashi, despite his near-constant use of the technique. Kakashi also helps Naruto to discover the nature of his chakra through a special form of paper that reacts differently to chakra. When Naruto channels his chakra into the paper, it splits in half, indicating that Naruto has an affinity for wind.

The first part of Naruto's training involves him and his many clones trying to cut a leaf in their hands with chakra alone. Whenever one makes progress, it disperses itself so each clone gains the knowledge. During this time, Naruto asks Kakashi if there are any other wind element users, so Kakashi points him to Asuma. Asuma gives one of Naruto's clones some pointers by explaining how he uses his trench knives, but not before getting Naruto to cover his team's next party dinner. After a while, he disperses every single clone, allowing him to gain all their knowledge at once, but also causing extreme mental fatigue. He does this again to complete his training.

The second part of Naruto's training involves the same technique, but with a much bigger object: in this case, a waterfall. Yamato had created it earlier as a demonstration. At first he fails to even stop the water, but an argument with Kakashi over the need to get stronger than Sasuke makes Naruto even more determined. That night, Naruto sees a shooting star and is reminded why he is doing this training. On the next try, Naruto and his clones split the waterfall all the way across, completely severing it from side to side. He disperses his clones once more, leaving him both tired and hungry.

With the second step done, Naruto can start creating his first original jutsu. Before they can begin, however, Kakashi says that he wants to show Naruto something special. This is revealed to be the Rasengan, which Kakashi was capable of doing all along. He explains that the ultimate purpose of the Fourth's jutsu was to combine both the form manipulation and nature manipulation of one's chakra into an extremely powerful jutsu. However, the Fourth was unable to complete the jutsu and the Rasengan was the maximum that both the Fourth and Kakashi were able to achieve. Kakashi believes that Naruto will be able to do what neither of them could, however. Though he doesn't say so to Naruto, he believes that the only person who can surpass the Fourth is Naruto.
