#[[User:Aphaia|Aphaia]] 16:10, 2 Nov 2004 (UTC) Intereting, but need NPOVize. Even today ''lanugage or dialect'' is controversial, but this article spports a particular side.
|Language=en
#* It may be controversial among 日本本土人民 (general population of the Japanese mainland), or even some 日本本土言語学者 (Japanese mainland linguist), however all experts on the topic (not general linguistics or even Japanese linguistics, but rather the speech of the area in question) agree unanimously that these are multiple languages and are separate from Japanese. Specialists around the world do not call them dialects, and the introduction to the article in 言語学大辞典 (under 琉球語) is strongly opposed to calling them dialects. For example, see http://ryukyu-lang.lib.u-ryukyu.ac.jp/intro/img/dist.gif which doesn't even show the distance between Tanegashima and the Tokara islands, and from Tokara to mainland Japan, which I think is at least 300km and maybe more. Now, you may raise an objection and say that mainland Japan is not home to multiple languages but only to dialects, however there is another difference in that the mainland (as shown in the image, excluding Kyushu and Hokkaido) is made for the most part of just two large islands with the only obstacle for population movement being the Japan Alps, whereas the Ryukyus are separated from the mainland by hundreds of kilometers, and are separated from each other by huge distances of ocean; in addition in feudal times there were other languages spoken in Japan (for example Kumato, Hayaso, etc), although the most diversity was in Kyushu there was also a considerable bit of linguistic diversity in Honshu and Shikoku, which was only quashed by conquerings and unifications. However, it took until the 1100s for the main island of Okinawa to become unified under one goverment, (previously divided into three kingdoms) and the other districts (Amami, Miyako, and Yaeyama) were taken much later and were much more difficult to govern from the capital. The way linguists decide if two languages are separate or just dialects is lexical comparison using a Swadesh list (a list of 207 core vocabulary words). Using this method, Okinawan of Naha is 72% similar to Kagoshimaben and 71% similar to Hyojungo, while Kagoshimaben and Hyojungo are 81% similar to each other. This proves that, compared to mainland dialects, Naha vocabulary is almost an equal lexical distance from two mainland dialects spoken hundreds of kilometers apart. In addition, although there is no set boundary between dialects and languages, most linguists set it at 80% or very close because less than 80% is difficult for mutual intelligibility, for example with some effort you might be able to understand a short folktale in Kagoshimaben, but you probably wouldn't be able to understand a short folktale in the speech of Naha. There is a proverb on Okinawa, "nmarijima nu kutuba wasshiinee, kuni n wasshiin". The way to say it in Hyojungo is "umarijima no kotoba wo wasuretara, kuni mo wasureru". Each word is related, yes, but this is just one short sentence. Such simple words as "boy" and "girl" are wildly different from the way it is said in Tokyo - boy is "wikiga" and girl is "winagu", in Naha. Personal pronouns are different too, "I" is "wan" in Naha, and in Yonaguni it's "banu". As I said before about expert vs popular knowledge, although many people believe Sanskrit is the parent of all Indo-European languages, this is 100% false according to every single expert in the field, so we don't include that opinion in the article because it has no expert backing.

Five of the family members (except for another, who has died) walk on all fours with their feet and the palms of their hands in what is called a "bear crawl". #[[User:Shizhao|Shizhao]] 17:58, 2 Nov 2004 (UTC)
|Stub_or_first_paragraph=The Windows Metafile vulnerability—also called the Metafile Image Code Execution and abbreviated MICE—is a security vulnerability in the way some versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system handled images in the Windows Metafile format. It permits arbitrary code to be executed on affected computers without the permission of their users. It was discovered on December 27, 2005, and the first reports of affected computers were announced within 24 hours. Microsoft released a high-priority update to eliminate this vulnerability via Windows Update on January 5, 2006. Attacks using this vulnerability are known as WMF exploits.

The vulnerability was located in gdi32.dll and existed in all versions of Microsoft Windows from Windows 3.0 to Windows Server 2003 R2. However, attack vectors only exist in NT-based versions of Windows (Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003). Exploits taking advantage of the vulnerability on Windows NT-based systems facilitated the propagation of various types of malware, typically through drive-by downloads.

Due to extreme impact, this bug won the 2007 Pwnie Award for "Mass 0wnage" and "Breaking the Internet".
