Nel 2007 ha destato molto stupore e sconcerto la rivelazione che il nonno di Serafinowicz, il bielorusso allora residente nel [[Regno Unito]] Szymon Serafinowicz Sr., era stato indagato nel [[1991]] da una corte britannica per presunti crimini commessi contro ebrei durante l'occupazione nazista della Bielorussia nella [[seconda guerra mondiale]], durante la quale era un ufficiale di polizia. Il processo non si è mai concluso, poiché egli è stato trovato incapace di intendere e di volere causa il progredire del [[morbo di Alzheimer]] nel 1997, morendo poco dopo lo stesso anno<ref name="Fletcher" />. È sposato con l'attrice [[Sarah Alexander]].

I gemelli Varsalona nacquero il 24 febbraio [[2011]] a [[Catania]], nuovo capoluogo della [[Sicilia]] da poco ceduta dal [[governo Berlusconi IV]] alla [[Tunisia]], scelta che aveva permesso all’[[Italia]] di raggiungere il [[pareggio di bilancio]] ed evitare così il [[default]]. La famiglia Varsalona era una delle più distinte della città etnea, avendo espresso in passato numerosi sindaci e membri del consiglio di amministrazione del [[Catania Football Club]].

Già in giovane età i due dimostrarono una forte attitudine verso la criminalità e la violenza, entrando presto a far parte della cosca locale e iniziando a scalare i vertici di [[Cosa Nostra]]. Durante la [[scuola primaria]], usarono le loro connessioni con la malavita per intimidire i professori e gli avversari di [[Calcio a 5|calcetto]], arrivando anche alla [[gambizzazione]] dei rivali.

=== Carriera ===

Dopo aver partecipato a molte trasmissioni radiofoniche, Serafinowicz recita nel 1999, a fianco di [[Simon Pegg]], nella [[sitcom]] di [[Channel 4]] ''[[Spaced]]''. Nel 2003 appare anche nella sitcom ''[[Hardware (serie televisiva)|Hardware]]'', per poi recitare per la prima volta sul grande schermo sempre a fianco dell'amico Simon Pegg ne ''[[L'alba dei morti dementi]]'', del [[2004]]. Lo stesso anno, ha anche recitato nel film con [[Orlando Bloom]] ''[[The Calcium Kid]]''.

Parallelamente alla crescita della loro carriera criminosa, i gemelli vollero intraprendere un’ambiziosa carriera attoriale, venendo di poco scartati dal cast di ''[[Gomorra - La serie]]'', al quale avrebbero voluto unirsi per avere l’opportunità di seguire gli ordini del boss [[Matteo Messina Denaro]], che aveva dato loro il compito di uccidere [[Roberto Saviano]]. Pur fallendo ignominiosamente questa missione, i gemelli si innamorarono del mondo del cinema e della televisione, comparendo finalmente nella [[miniserie televisiva]] della [[RAI]] ''[[Questo nostro amore]]'', che valse loro fama nazionale ed internazionale.

Pur essendo brillantemente avviati verso una fulgente carriera cinematografica, il capo dei capi Messina Denaro ordinò ai gemelli di scoprire l’identità di [[Elena Ferrante]], così da ricattare l’''élite'' letteraria italiana. I due intrapresero quindi la carriera da scrittori, che portò Bartolo a vincere il prestigioso [[Premio Campiello|Premio Campiello Giovani]] e a scoprire l’identità della Ferrante nella giovane scrittrice [[Michela Panichi]], appena immatricolatasi all’[[Università di Bologna]].

Nel 2010 Serafinowicz ha debuttato alla regia dirigendo il videoclip della canzone degli [[Hot Chip]] ''I Feel Better'', per poi dirigere, nel 2012, anche quello della canzone ''Night & Day'', interpretato, fra gli altri, da [[Lara Stone]] e da [[Terence Stamp]]. I due quindi decisero di seguirla assumendo le innocenti personalità di due studenti di lettere, riuscendo ad arrivare clandestinamente in [[Italia]] con un barcone arenatosi a [[Villa San Giovanni]]<ref>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8ztYXUfiOA</ref>. Dopo alcune difficoltà a trovare una sistemazione nella città felsinea, i gemelli furono soccorsi da [[Tommaso D’Aloia]], esponente della [[Sacra Corona Unita]], da sempre alleata della Mafia siciliana. Trovata una casa grazie a questa intercessione, i due camuffarono ulteriormente le loro identità fingendosi palermitani e grandi tifosi dell’odiato [[Palermo Football Club]].

Insieme a [[David Tennant]], [[David Prowse]] e [[Jeremy Bulloch]] ed ad altri, Serafinowicz è uno degli attori ad aver recitato sia in una pellicola della saga di ''[[Star Wars]]'' sia in un episodio della serie televisiva ''[[Doctor Who]]'', avendo doppiato [[Darth Maul]] in ''[[Star Wars: Episodio I - La minaccia fantasma]]'' e avendo interpretato il Re Pescatore nell'episodio ''[[Episodi di Doctor Who (nuova serie) (nona stagione)#Prima del diluvio|Prima del diluvio]]''.

Dopo aver quasi ucciso il famigerato [[Diego Imbastardo]] causa le loro violenze durante le partite di calcetto, i gemelli capirono di avere le autorità alle calcagna e, dopo aver frettolosamente liquidato la Panichi, seppellita nei pressi di [[Perugia]], si organizzarono per tornare finalmente nella tanto amata Catania.

In 1999, he made a number of appearances in [[Channel 4]] sitcom ''[[Spaced]]'', playing principal character Tim Bisley's ([[Simon Pegg]]) nemesis, Duane Benzie. He made another appearance in the series when it returned in 2001. In 2001 Serafinowicz took the lead in [[BBC Two]] sitcom ''[[World of Pub]]'', playing the same character as he had done in the show's run on Radio 4. He was also in ''[[The Junkies (pilot)|The Junkies]]'', an Internet sitcom. In 2002 the critically acclaimed ''[[Look Around You]]'', a series of 10-minute 1970s school science video spoofs, debuted on BBC Two in which Serafinowicz played a scientist. He co-wrote the show alongside [[Robert Popper]], whom he met on the set of ''[[Spaced]]''. The show returned in 2005 as a spoof of the 1980s show ''[[Tomorrow's World]]'', with Serafinowicz playing Peter Packard, one of the presenters.

In 2003, he appeared in another Nye-written sitcom, ''[[Hardware (TV series)|Hardware]]'', in which he played the affable Kenny. He reprised this role in the second series in 2004. Also in 2004 he appeared in British rom-zom-com (romantic-zombie-comedy) ''[[Shaun of the Dead]]'', playing Pete, the tidy flatmate of principal characters Shaun and Ed. He also appeared in boxing film ''[[The Calcium Kid]]''. In ''[[Sixty Six (film)|Sixty Six]]'', the 2006 British film about a Jewish boy whose [[Bar Mitzvah]] is scheduled for the same day as the [[1966 FIFA World Cup Final]], Serafinowicz plays Uncle Jimmy. In the week before the 2006 [[Academy Awards]] a video circulated on the Internet of a fake news item (called "O! News", a parody of [[E!|E! News]]) about a new Oscar statue, in which Serafinowicz imitated [[Alan Alda]], [[Paul McCartney]] and [[Al Pacino]]. A second O! News video later appeared, parodying the 2006 [[Apple Corps v. He followed this up in 2012 when he directed the music video for the band's song "Night & Day", the first single from their album ''[[In Our Heads]]''. The video starred [[Lara Stone]], [[Terence Stamp]] and [[Reggie Watts]].

In 2015 it was announced that Serafinowicz is in the process of writing a television sitcom based on his Brian Butterfield character. In October 2007, Serafinowicz dropped his attempt to use the [[Human Rights Act 1998|Human Rights Act]] to prevent the publication of details revealing his Belarusian grandfather as the first man in Britain to go on trial for Nazi war crimes under the [[War Crimes Act 1991|War Crimes Act]]. Szymon Serafinowicz Sr. was charged with allegedly murdering three [[Jews]] while a police chief during the Nazi occupation of his native [[Belarus]] in [[World War II]]. He was found unfit for trial on grounds of [[dementia]] in 1997, and died later that year, aged 86.<ref name="Fletcher" />
