Mr. and Mrs. Baudelaire are fictional characters in A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. They are the parents of Violet Baudelaire, Klaus Baudelaire, and Sunny Baudelaire. Not much is known about them, except at least one of them was killed (although they are both presumed dead) in the fire that burned down the Baudelaire Mansion, and they were members of V.F.D.

Their deaths
The fire which killed Mr. and Mrs. Baudelaire was the starting point for the first book of the series, The Bad Beginning. While it has not been explicitly stated whether the fire was accidental or the result of arson, Snicket has several times hinted that someone else was at the Baudelaire mansion when the fire started. Also, other characters, such as Isadora, Duncan and Quigley Quagmire have lost parents in similar fires, and members of V.F.D. are logical suspects. In Thirteen Shocking Secrets You'll Wish You Never Knew About Lemony Snicket, it is revealed that Snicket is wanted for arson, which makes him a possible suspect as well. However, in Lemony Snicket the Unauthorized Autobiography, he mentions that he knows of other people starting fires, although he himself did not.

Further clues were revealed in The Ersatz Elevator when the Baudelaire children discovered a secret passageway from 667 Dark Avenue to the remains of their home.

Possible survivor
The next clues were found in The Hostile Hospital. Page 13 of the Snicket File, the only page to be found in Heimlich Hospital's Library of Records, says "Due to the evidence discussed on page 9, experts now suspect that there may in fact be one survivor of the fire, but the survivor's whereabouts are unknown." The Baudelaire children took this as meaning that one of their parents may be alive. In The Slippery Slope, Quigley Quagmire implied that he thought that Mr. Baudelaire was the survivor. However, Lemony Snicket has commented that Mr. Baudelaire is definitely dead. Also, it is confirmed in The End that Beatrice is the Baudelaire's mother, and according to Snicket's dedication pages, she is clearly dead. It is possible that the fire mentioned was actually the Quagmire fire, and that the survivor referred to was, in fact, Quigley. It is mentioned, however, that two women in the story are called Beatrice, so Mrs Baudelaire could in fact still be alive.

In The Carnivorous Carnival, when the Hook-Handed Man says that one of the parents is alive, Lemony Snicket says that the statement is not true. However, this could be taken several ways: i.e. it could be that they are both dead, or that they are both alive.

It is also possible that the survivor was later killed when the VFD HQ in the Mountains was destroyed. Even if one parent did survive, however, they are never encountered during the series and play no part in the story. It is generally assumed that they are both dead.

Mr. Baudelaire
Snicket has told us that Mister Bertrand Baudelaire was a jovial and friendly man. It was revealed in The Penultimate Peril, that his first name was Bertrand. He and his wife were members of the V.F.D., and were friends with, among others, Lemony, Jacques and Kit Snicket, as well as Uncle Monty, Mr. Poe and Jerome Squalor.

Mr. Baudelaire was, according to The Hostile Hospital, a good cook. His need for help in opening a can of condensed milk was the beginning of Sunny's interest in cooking.

Mrs. Baudelaire
It has been confirmed that Mrs. Baudelaire was Beatrice, Lemony Snicket's deceased love. It mentions in The End a ring that has passed through many people, and at one point it says that Snicket gave it to her but she gave it back because she couldn't take it. However, in the Beatrice Letters, in one of Beatrice's letters to Snicket, she says she traded a ring which had emblazoned on it the initial of someone Snicket knew. As we know the ring had an R on it, and Snicket definitely knew Duchess of Winnipeg, it may be the same ring. In The End, Snicket has also indicated that Beatrice died in a fire, as Mrs. Baudelaire did, and many readers believe that her death is the reason that Snicket is so determined to tell the story of the orphans. Since Beatrice is definitely dead, if Beatrice was Mrs. Baudelaire, the survivor of the Baudelaire Mansion fire - if there was one - must have been Mr. Baudelaire.

According to The Wide Window, Mrs. Baudelaire could whistle Mozart's Symphony No. 14. A Baudelaire family characteristic, according to Aunt Josephine, is to whistle symphonies. In Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorized Autobiography, we are told that Snicket was engaged to an actress - obviously Beatrice - who could whistle this symphony. This is seen as a further indication that Beatrice might have been Mrs. Baudelaire.

In The Hostile Hospital, when Klaus and Sunny have to descramble the anagrammatical patient names to find Violet, one of the names, "Carrie E. Abelabudite," could be rearranged to spell out "Beatrice Baudelaire". While some readers believe this to be proof, other readers point out that another of the names can be rearranged to read "red herring". It is likely that these questions will be answered in the thirteenth book.

In "The Penultimate Peril", it is revealed that Mr. Baudelaire's first name is Bertrand. Some readers believe this to be a clue because Bertrand sounds and is spelt closely to Beatrice, and it is common in the series to use alliterative titles and names, thus suggesting that Mrs. Baudelaire's name must start with "B". This doesn't give much evidence however. The Slippery Slope gives evidence that Mrs. Baudelaire is, in fact, Lemony Snicket's sister; however, the Snicket family tree only displays the initials - J for Jacques, K for Kit, and L for Lemony. In chapter five, Lemony Snicket details a letter he had written to his sister and it mentions a salad that she invented. The book later on describes that Sunny made a salad, containing the exact ingredients that Lemony Snicket writes in that letter. However, this might have become a commonplace dish among volunteers at V.F.D., so there is no proof that Lemony Snicket is their uncle. His only sister is Kit, and when she appeared at the end of The Grim Grotto, as well as The Penultimate Peril, the Baudelaires never appeared to recognize her - further saying that Kit is not their mother, and so it can be presumed that Beatrice is a likely candidate.

In the supplementary book The Beatrice Letters, which presents a collection of correspondence between Beatrice and Lemony Snicket, it is revealed that Beatrice's last name is "Baudelaire." It is also strongly hinted that there are in fact two Beatrices; it is possible that one is the children's mother. To further support the claim that there are two Beatrices, the Vile Videos on Lemony Snicket's website show a clue in each video and when all of these clues are put together, the phrase is "Two Called Beatrice".

In the last and final book "The End" right before Kit Snicket dies, she tells Violet to name her baby after her mother, a family tradition. At the end we find out the baby looks at the ship named after her grandmother, Beatrice. This exclaims that Beatrice is in fact, the mother.

The poison darts
The Penultimate Peril also opens up more disturbing possibilities about the Baudelaire parents. Kit Snicket tells the children about a night that she attended an opera (La Forza del Destino) with the Baudelaires, and handed them a box of poison darts although she doesn't explain why. Later in the book Count Olaf reveals that his parents were killed by poison darts, and also that he has good reason to hate the Baudelaires. This would imply that the Baudelaire parents murdered Olaf's own parents, explaining Count Olaf's grudge against the family (and his motive for burning down the Baudelaire mansion, as many believe), and possibly also why he became a villain. Also, one of the "13 Shocking Secrets That You'll Wish You Never Knew About Lemony Snicket" states that Lemony helped Beatrice commit a serious crime before her death. This crime could possibly be the death of Count Olaf's parents, backing up the possibility that Beatrice is the Baudelaire's mother.

Allusions
Snicket is fond of using literary and philosophical allusions in his books. The Baudelaires are named after Charles Baudelaire who wrote "La Béatrice" and their father, Bertrand, is named for Aloysius Bertrand, a poet who strongly influenced Baudelaire.
