The term "character-oriented" is deprecated, {{By whom|Decdate=December 2017}} since the notion of character has changed. An ASCII character fits to one byte (octet) in terms of the amount of information. With the internationalization of computer software, wide characters became necessary, to handle texts in different languages. In particular, Unicode characters (or strictly speaking [[code point]]s) can be 81, 162, 3 or 324 bitsbytes long,in i.e.[[UTF-8]], 1,and 2,other encodings of [[Unicode]] use two or 4four bytes per code point.
