Dal [[1978]] al [[1983]] è stato la voce dei [[Japan (gruppo musicale)|Japan]], band londinese nata dal [[Glamglam rock]]/[[New wave (musica)|Newnew wave]] che negli ultimi album, da ''[[Gentlemen Take Polaroids]]'' fino a ''[[Tin Drum]], '', si cimenterà in sonorità ispirate alla musica giapponese, grazie anche alla collaborazione di [[Ryūichi Sakamoto]].<ref>{{cita web|url=http://www.allmusic.com/artist/david-sylvian-mn0000183139/biography|titolo=AllMusic - David Sylvian - Biography|accesso=7 febbraio 2014Allmusic}}</ref>
