#REDIRECT [[List of Mega Man characters#Proto Man]]
A fictional character from the Mega Man game-series by Capcom. Proto Man (sometimes called Break Man; "Blues" is his original Japanese name) is the early prototype of Mega Man that made his first appearance in Mega Man 3 (NES, 1990). Beyond their armour and personality Proto Man and Mega Man are completely identical or that is the image that many fans of the series wish to give although Proto Man has never actually removed his helmet in the official Capcom Mega Man titles.

He has a grey and red (in the earlier titles a white and red) uniform and a yellow scarf (in the earlier games a bandanna). He wears a red helmet with a silvery decoration and a dark viser which prevents anyone from seeing his eyes. He always appears before his distinctive whistle.

Proto Man is sometimes considered as a stereotypical "mysterious anime character" though it is because of this air of mystery why fans adore the character. Capcom has never revealed the past of Proto Man or even why the character didn't appear until the third game. This has obviously lead to speculation.
==Mega Man: Battle Network==
There is also a character in the GBA-game "Mega Man: Battle Network", called ProtoMan.Exe, which seems to be a mix between Proto Man from the classic Mega Man-series and Zero from the Mega Man X-series. Unlike the original this character has nothing to do with the MegaMan.Exe character of that game-series.
==Personality Debate==
There is also some debate over Proto Man's lineage. Many sources, including the Mega Man cartoon by Ruby-Spears, tend to claim that Proto Man is evil. This debate has been further fueled by the way Proto Man tends to make his appearances (usually fighting with his brother). Mega Man 5 caused severe complications though the ending was very plain about the issue.
The official continuity currently dictates that Proto Man is in fact a good-guy.
==Trivia==
Proto Man's name is often spelled incorrectly by Mega Man fans even though that Capcom's official stand on Mega Man names is that all Mega Man names are to be written with a space (except for the Japanese names as the Japanese language does not have/use spaces, despite this even Capcom tends to write its character-names incorrectly). This popular way of writing the name as "Protoman" originates from the earlier Mega Man titles where the translation was sometimes a little dodgy.
