A Chinese Odyssey (Chinese: 大話西遊) is a 1994 duology, directed by Jeffrey Lau. They are actor Stephen Chow's most famous movies, the first one being A Chinese Odyssey Part One: Pandora's Box (西遊記第壹佰零壹回之月光寶盒) and the second one being A Chinese Odyssey Part Two: Cinderella (西遊記大結局之仙履奇緣). The two films together can be called a "sad comedy" showcasing Stephen Chow's comic genius while telling a sad love story. The movie is based on the Chinese classical novel Journey to the West and boasted a host of famous Hong Kong stars in it. Although filmed in Cantonese, it is now a cult film among Mandarin-speaking young adults in most chinese cities today.

A Chinese Odyssey is a two-part 1995 Hong Kong fantasy-comedy film directed by Jeffrey Lau and starring Stephen Chow.

* Part 1: Pandora's Box
The two films starts off with an introduction scene based somewhere in the midst of the classic Journey to the West. On the journey to find holy Scriptures, Sun Wukong (Stephen Chow), finding his master to be too talkative and annoying, rebels and tries to get rid of his own master, the Longevity Monk (Law Kar-ying) by giving him to the Bull King in exchange for marrying the Bull King's sister. As punishment, Guanyin captures and decides to lock unrepentant Wukong away for eternity. Yet, she is stopped by Sun Wukong's master who maintains that he should receive some of the blame for his disciple's faults. He willingly takes Wukong's place by sacrificing himself to give Wukong a second chance (A life for a life).

The first part is titled A Chinese Odyssey Part One: Pandora's Box, while the second part is titled A Chinese Odyssey Part Two: Cinderella. The film is very loosely based on the 16th-century Wu Cheng'en novel Journey to the West.
The film proper starts 500 years later where Wukong has been reincarnated as leader of desert bandits named Joker. Having no memory about his past, Joker gets involved with different demons and women. Through the course of the movie, Joker is in love with a demon woman, Pak Gwut-Jing (Karen Mok), who also loves him in return. Joker while having a quarrel with her sister, the Spider Woman (Lam Kit Ying), accidentally lock himself in a cave. He tries to dig a tunnel to get out, but instead he finds Pandora's Box. He was also teleported to the Water Curtain Cave, where he saw Sun Wukong's gold ring and golden rod. When he open up a scroll beside the ring, Guanyin spoke through the scroll to tell Joker of his fate as Sun Wukong but it does not happen as he hasn't met the person who gave him the three dots on the sole. Meanwhile Jing returns to find that her partner just gave birth to a child which was fathered by Joker's assistant, but she say it was by Joker to spike her, and because of this, she commit suicide. Joker return to find that she was killed. thinking someone has killed her, he use the Pandora's Box to find the killer, but he was aone step too late. Thus he repeat this process for a few times before manage to find the truth and stop her by explaining to her. Meanwhile the Bull King arrive and engage in combat with the both sister. She is killed in the process of protecting Joker. Using the Pandora's Box, Joker goes back in time to save her again, but mistakingly transports himself 500 years into the past, the time that Sun Wukong came from.

Plot
Part One
500 years ago, during their journey to the west to fetch the Buddhist scriptures, Monkey got annoyed with the constant nagging of his master, Longevity Monk, and decided to betray him. He was intercepted and subdued by Guanyin, who decided to give him a second chance after Longevity Monk pleaded for leniency and sacrificed himself.

Joker is the chief of a group of outlaws. Joker and his gang are attacked by two demons, Spider Woman and Bak Jing-jing, who threaten and force them to search nearby travelers for 3 dots on their feet, an indication of Monkey. Joker's second-in-command (a reincarnation of Pigsy) overhears the demons' plan to capture Longevity Monk and feast on his flesh to gain immortality, prompting Spider Woman to force him into servitude. Joker subsequently falls in love with Bak Jing-jing. Grandpa Buddha informs Joker about the danger he is in, gives him a magic mirror which can reveal a being's true form, and claims to the suspicious demons that Joker is a reincarnation of Monkey to give them time to escape.
* Part 2: Cinderella
In this time period, Joker meets a female spirit named Lin Zixia (Athena Chu) who confiscates the Pandora's Box. She is the person who was mention by Guanyin earlier as the person who give Joker the three dots on the sole thus becoming Sun Wukong. She and her sister where punished by Buddha for being too quarrelsome and are now cursed to share the same body; one of them has control during the day, the other during the night. However, neither sister knows about this; they both assume that the other sister is somewhere else in the world. To get back the Pandora's Box, Joker agrees to help Zixia convince her sister that she is dead so she hands over her magical sword to him as proof. This sword can only be drawn from its scabbard by her true love, which Joker easily does. Noticing this, Zixia quickly falls for Joker.

The group are attacked by Bull King, who is also after Longevity Monk. Joker and Pigsy flee with Bak Jing-jing and Spider Woman to Waterfall Cave, where the two demons starts fighting over Joker. Bak Jing-jing and Joker eventually flee from the cave while Spider Woman is impregnated with Pigsy's child by accident. As Bak Jing-jing has been poisoned by Spider Woman, Joker goes back to the cave to ask for the antidote, but is imprisoned by Spider Woman. In the meantime, outside the cave, Bak Jing-jing is captured by Bull King, who cures her of the poison in exchange for revenge on Monkey.
In the night, Joker stumbles upon a curious scene. This is in fact the scene that begins the movie, where Wukong is arguing with Guanyin. It seems that Wukong has swiped the Pandora's Box from Zixia and was planning to use it to escape from his master. Yet, he was caught by Guanyin before he had the opportunity. Guanyin proceeds to capture as in the beginning, however, due to Joker's interference this time, the Pandora's Box accidentally transports the Longevity Monk - instead of Joker - before he could sacrifice himself.

Inside the cave, Joker finds Pandora's Box, which can open up a time portal when moonlight shines on it and when "Prajñāpāramitā" is chanted. He also overhears Guanyin's voice, telling him that he was actually Monkey in his past life and is destined to continue his quest to escort his master on the journey to the west. Meanwhile, Bull King and Bak Jing-jing enter the cave and fight with Spider Woman. Bak Jing-jing commits suicide after mistakenly believing that Joker has betrayed her love and fathered a child with Spider Woman.
Continuing on, Joker encounters the Bull King. In the Bull King's place he meets the Longevity Monk, Zhu Bajian (Ng Man Tat) and Sha Wujing. They all (including the Bull King) recognize Joker as Wukong. Joker doesn't believe it, but somewhat plays along. The Bull King has captured the Longevity Monk and wishes to eat for eternal life; he now holds the Pandora's Box. He has also captured Zixia to become his newest concubine.

Joker finds Bak Jing-jing and tries to save her by travelling back in time with the aid of Pandora's Box, but each time he arrives a few seconds too late to stop her from committing suicide. He finally manages to make it on time to prevent Bak Jing-jing from slitting her throat, but she sacrifices herself to save him from Bull King. Joker travels back in time again, but ends up going back in time by 500 years. Outside the cave, he encounters a fairy, Zixia, who confiscates Pandora's Box and sears three dots on the sole of his foot to mark him as her servant. This finishes Monkey's reincarnation.
Just before the wedding, the Bull King's wife shows up and stops it. She also recognizes Joker as Wukong, but, interestingly enough, she came to see Wukong and not the Bull King. She recounts the past romantic affairs that she and Wukong had. Escaping from her, Joker finds an angry Zixia. Joker convinces Zixia with a lie that he loves her. Together, they plan to steal the Pandora's Box and escape.

Part Two
At night time, Joker looks for Zixia. She has, however, been stabbed by the Bull King's sister who is jealous that Joker "loves" her instead. Joker manages to escape with an unconscious Zixia. He meets up with Bajian and Wujing. They are pursue separately by the Bull King and the Bull King's sister. In a three-way fight, several bodies are accidentally exchanged through the body change technique of the Bull King's sister. Bajian now shares the body with Zixia. Meanwhile, Zixia's sister has been moved into Bajian's body. The Bull King's sister has changed bodies with Wujing. Everybody, except Zixia/Bajian, manage to escape from the Bull King. Joker escapes but the Bull king's Wife manage to find him. He try to escape by pretending to fall off of a cliff, but when the Bull King's wife sees him and tries to approach, he falls off for real. She then return to her home in Flaming Mountain, thinking that Joker would rather jump off then to be with her. His fall manages to kill several officers and save three robbers who were about to be executed.
After travelling back in time, Joker learns more about his past life and reunites with his master, Longevity Monk, and his fellows, Pigsy and Sandy. However, he does not want to accept his fate as Monkey because he just wants to get back Pandora's Box and return to 500 years later to save Bak Jing-jing. Zixia falls in love with him after he pulls out her sword from its scabbard because she made a promise to marry the person who can unsheathe her sword.

Zixia and Longevity Monk are captured by Bull King, who wants to take Zixia as his concubine and feast on Longevity Monk's flesh to become immortal. Pigsy and Sandy try to rescue their master but he refuses to leave unless Joker promises to fulfil his destiny. Joker goes off in search of Zixia and rescues her, after which they flee from Bull King. In the ensuing fight between Joker and his companions against Bull King, Joker falls off a cliff and finds himself back in Waterfall Cave, where he meets Grandpa Buddha and Bak Jing-jing. Bak Jing-jing agrees to marry Joker initially, but she leaves later and tells him to save Zixia because she knows he's actually in love with someone else. Shortly after, Spider Woman comes to Waterfall Cave and kills everyone, including Joker. At the point of death, Joker realises the one he truly loves is Zixia.
Joker is carried back to the cave where he first found the Pandora's Box and met Zixia by the robbers he saved. One of them reports to him that he muttered the name of "Jing Jing" many times in his sleep. Joker happily replies that she is the person he loves. Nonetheless, the robber mentions that he muttered the name of "Zixia" even more times. Joker is stunned and confused.

Joker, as a ghost, hears Guanyin's voice inside the cave again, reminding him about his destiny. He decides to accept his fate and puts on the golden circlet, therefore transforming into Monkey. He returns to the world and rushes to Bull King's city to save his master and stop Bull King's wedding ceremony with Zixia. As he is now Monkey, he must relinquish all his human desires, including love, so he tells Zixia he is not Joker and pretends to scorn her.
Jing Jing arrives at the cave and meets Joker. Since she is of the past, she knows nothing of their romance. Joker, with the help of the robbers, reenact the whole story of what happened and convince her that their love is true. She agrees to marry him. However, she changes and mind just before the wedding, leaving him with a letter to go save Zixia. Another demon woman, Spider Woman (Lam Kit Ying), shows up and slaughters the robbers and Joker.

Monkey and Bull King engage in battle. When Bull King realises he is losing, he uses Princess Iron Fan's magic fan to churn up strong winds that will blow the entire city towards the sun and kill everyone in the process. Monkey succeeds in stopping Bull King and saves everyone, but Zixia sacrifices herself to save him. As she dies, Monkey reveals his love for her and, as a result, his circlet tightens and causes him to feel extreme agony. In anger, he beats up Bull King before escaping together with his master, Pigsy and Sandy by using Pandora's Box.
The dead Joker's spirit is now reformed; he understands that he is Sun Wukong and he understands the importance of the Longevity Monk's journey to help spread wisdom to the suffering people. After a short conversation with Guanyin, he accepts the position to become Sun Wukong once again and help the Longevity Monk by wearing the gold ring. In doing so, however, he must let go of all wordly desires, including love.

Monkey wakes up later and finds himself in a cave, but with his master and fellows this time. Outside the cave, in a busy city, Monkey sees the incarnations of Joker and Zixia in a standoff on top of a wall. He uses his powers to possess Joker's body and gave Zixia a long and passionate kiss before leaving Joker's body. Joker recovers and is surprised to see himself locked in an embrace with Zixia, but accepts and continues the romance with her. They notice Monkey walking away in the crowd below and laugh at his appearance. Monkey does not turn back until outside the gates where he gave a final glance at the embracing couple and continues on the journey to the west with his companions.
Meanwhile, the Bull King's sister and Wujing are trying to save the Longevity Monk and Bajian while restoring everyone to their original bodies. They succeed in restoring everyone except for the Bull King's sister - she gets trapped into a dog. Zixia' sister is placed into the Bull King's sister's body. Zixia and her sister also make amends when they both try to save each other (Zixia from letting her sister get killed, and her sister from letting Zixia get married).

Cast
All try to fight against the Bull King, but he is simply to powerful. As all seems hopeless, Joker, who is now Sun Wukong, appears and fights the Bull King. Wukong is clearly holding the upper hand. Zixia is sure that he is Joker, but Wukong tries to pretend that he is not. Furthermore, he acts spiteful towards her since he is not allowed to love.

Reception
They turn up 500 years later and renew their journey. Upon leaving the city, Wukong notices the reincarnations of Joker and Zixia. Apparently, both have been standing on top of the city wall for days, locked in a lover's quarrel. Unwilling to accept this display, Wukong possesses Joker's body temporarily and kisses Zixia, promising to never leave her anytime in this life. He leaves Joker's body satisfied, and continues with his companions into the distance, toward the west.
The Austin Chronicle gave Part Two a positive review saying that "if you missed the original film - forget it, you'll never understand what's happening in this picture, but if you saw and enjoyed the first part, you'll no doubt have a great time with this terrific follow-up".
