It was founded in 1957 as the Computing Center of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR and Yerevan State University.

({{lang-hy|Ինֆորմատիկայի և ավտոմատացման պրոբլեմների ինստիտուտ}}) is the leading research and technology development institute of the [[National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia]] (NAS RA) in the field of [[applied mathematics]] and [[informatics]] and application ___domain of computing technologies in diverse fields of science and technology.

The first Director IIAP was famousthe mathematician [[Sergey Mergelyan]].

IIAP was founded in 1957 (initially it was the Computer Centre of ([[National Academy of Sciences of Armenia|National Academy of Sciences of Armenia]] and [[Yerevan State University]]). IIAP was the pioneer in dissemination of fields of computer science and its applications in Armenia.

At the beginning of the 50s, the main research areas of the Institute were computer science and applied mathematics. Soviet Armenia was one of the key centers of computing and research activities of the Soviet Union in the field of industrial computing, software development, etc.

The first Director IIAP was famous mathematician [[Sergey Mergelyan]].

The Institute became the founder of various modern areas of applied mathematics. Many scholars worked in the Computing Center in diverse research fields of cybernetics and applied mathematics.

Among them were [[Sergey Mergelyan]], [[Ashot Petrosian]], [[Rom Varshamov]] and [[Igor Zaslavski]].

Since 1963, the Institute for Informatics and Automation Problems has published the journal "Mathematical Problems of Computer Science".

The main scientific directions of IIAP are [[Computer science]] and [[Applied mathematics]] in early 50s, <nowiki>[[Soviet Armenia]]</nowiki> has been a main hub of [[Soviet Union]]'s critical scientific and R&D activities in mainframe and industrial computing, software development, etc.

The title of institute was changed after the collapse of Soviet Union. IIAP carried out master's degree school.

Main directions of theoretical researches in IIAP nowadays are mathematical logic, theory of algorithms, theory of automata, algebraic coding theory, artificial intellect and cognitive models, discrete mathematics, graph theory, image processing, information theory and statistics, and numerical methods.

In 1994, the Armenian Scientific and Research Computer Network (ASNET-AM) was developed, created and operated at IIAP. It serves more than 65 networks of scientific and educational organizations operating in different regions of Armenia.
