"The assumed occurrence of a real-world event will typically modify preferences between certain options." No offense intended to the writer, but I don't think anyone can hope to extract any meaning here unless they already know the rest of the topic. I hope someone will fix it up so it has a discernible meaning. For example "the assumed occurrence of a real-world event" means what? There exists an assumption by somebody that a particular real-world event occurred? "...will typically modify..." So now we have that an assumed occurrence, whatever that is, modifies something.
