Nakajo no longer exists now as the adjoining village Kurokawa and Nakajo formed a new city of [[Tainai]] in early 2005. Tainai City has a population of approximately 33,000.

Nakajo was the home of a [[Southern Illinois University Carbondale]] study abroad program until late 2006, when the company [[NSG]] which bought out the school decided to close the program. The buildings have since become a very small school for [[high school]] and college [[English]] majors.

On September 1, 2005, Nakajō, along with the village of [[Kurokawa, Niigata|Kurokawa]] (also from [[Kitakanbara District, Niigata|Kitakanbara District]]), was merged to create the city of [[Tainai, Niigata|Tainai]]. Tainai City has a population of approximately 33,000.

The climate is very similar to [[Niigata City]] about 26 miles away. It is known for its [[short grain rice]] famous all throughout Japan. [[Tainai City]] is located in the foothills of the Japanese Alps; mountains of about 1000 feet in height are visible from all locations within the town. The mining island of [[Sado|Sado Island]] is also viewable on clear days.
