Super Transformation is a feature within the Sonic the Hedgehog series that allows the player to play as an enhanced version of the character. The resulting powered up characters are generally called Super Forms. The ability is traditionally obtained by collecting all of the Chaos Emeralds in addition to 50 rings. However, as the later games have become story based, the power can also be bestowed by another Super Form. While initially available as soon as the Emeralds are collected, the ability is most often reserved for the final battles within the games.
Features
Super Transformation generally gives the character enhanced speed, similar to using a "High Speed Shoes" power up. The transformation also originally gave the character the same effect as the "invincibility" power up. As of Sonic Adventure, taking damage while using Super Transformation will result in the character being thrown back a small distance. Certain enemy attacks will also cost the player anywhere from five to 20 rings. The player temporarily loses control in both situations. Even with the transformation enabled, the player can still lose a life by falling in a bottomless pit, being crushed, or drowning.
The compromise in Super Transformation is that the power is sustained by rings. It takes 50 rings to enable the transformation and one ring is lost per second. When the character runs out of rings, they will revert back to their regular form and cannot change back unless 50 additional rings are collected. Running out of rings in a final boss battle results in an instant loss of a life, regardless of the battlefield.
Another general Super Transformation ability is flight. This was originally unique to Super Sonic as he would fly above the ground at maximum speed, and take to full flight in the "Doomsday Zone". The ability is now shared by all Super Forms and is a defining trait. While in Super Form, the character does not stand on the ground, but rather hovers slightly above it. The character also does not ever touch the ground in order to accelerate, but instead hovers with varying degrees of speed. A Super Form can also hover in mid-air as they are usually used in areas high above the ground. Additionally, the air can become a "virtual ground" as shown in Sonic Heroes, enabling the player to jump and use the same abilities as if in a regular level.

Super Sonic
The primary transformation in the series, Sonic the Hedgehog becomes Super Sonic with the aid of the seven Chaos Emeralds. As Super Sonic, Sonic's blue fur becomes a golden yellow color and his green eyes become red. Originally, Sonic had black eyes which would turn green as Super Sonic. Super Sonic's quills stand on end, usually pointing upwards (although occasionally they look like Shadow's due to design liberties). His back quills also have a sharper slant and become more pointed. Super Sonic also has a golden aura which can take the shape of a fire around him or a sphere of energy depending on the game. Other special effects include sparkles and metallic fur, as well as cracks of electricity and afterimages.
When Sonic transforms into his Super Form, he is able to move extremely fast, and jump almost twice as high as normal. Super Sonic moves with such speed that it is often all too easy for beginner players to lose control of the character. Fortunately, this is countered by an increase in Sonic's agility — Super Sonic can quickly and easily stop and switch directions, especially in mid-air. Also, especially in Sonic 2, the camera occasionally has problems keeping track of Super Sonic. Sometimes the screen will lag behind so much that Sonic occasionally dies for no apparent reason after the camera is forced to play catch-up. While coming into the Dr. Robotnik boss area at the end of the Hydrocity Zone in Sonic 3, Sonic can fly at full speed, bypassing Dr. Robotnik himself. This results in a number of glitches.
In addition to enhanced speed, Super Sonic also has enhanced strength. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the player could use this to break through barriers that would require Spin Dash. Super Sonic's primary attack method is that of a powerful charged dash. Super Sonic is able to dash in multiple directions and is surrounded by fire as he does so, rendering him immune to enemy attack. Super Sonic retains all of his standard abilities and is able to use "Light Attack" without needing to charge up power.
Super Sonic has been shown to be able to transform other characters into Super Form using his own power. This was first seen in Sonic Heroes, and then again in Sonic the Hedgehog. The resulting Super Form is the exact same as the character would have if they enabled the transformation on their own, right down to the ring drain.
<!--(Noting out until a source is found)It is widely speculated that the visual appearance of Super Sonic, and the means used to assume the form, are homages to the manga/anime series Dragon Ball Z, in which the heroes assume "Super Saiyan" forms with spiky, glowing yellow hair. The quest for the seven mystical Dragon Balls, is also comparable to the seven Chaos Emeralds. If this is true, it is likely that the number of Chaos Emeralds was increased from six to seven for the first game with Super Sonic to match the seven Dragon Balls.-->
As the primary Super Form of the series, Super Sonic appears in nearly every game where Sonic is a main character and seven Chaos Emeralds must be collected. He also appears in various spin off games as a bonus character. Super Sonic is one of the two Super Forms to appear in the Sonic X cartoon.
Super Tails
Miles "Tails" Prower can transform into a super form, called Super Tails. His first official appearance was in Sonic 3 and Knuckles, where he needs the seven Super Emeralds to transform. In Super Form, Tails does not change color, but instead glows and is surrounded by 4 Super Flickies. These Super Flickies are transformed by using his energy and they revert back to normal when Tails does.
When in Super Form, Tails becomes faster, stronger, and invulnerable to attack. He also gains the ability to fly longer. The Flickies surrounding him instantly attack any nearby mechanical enemies including bosses. Unlike Super Sonic and Super Knuckles, Super Tails is not strong enough to destroy walls on impact and has to use the Spin Dash.

Super Tails's next appearance was in Sonic Heroes, where he was able to transform by using Chaos Energy supplied by Super Sonic. His appearance is slightly modified, with the addition of a golden energy sphere and the removal of the Super Flickies. Due to the battlefield used, it is unknown if his speed is increased. Tails is "invulnerable" in this form, but other than that, no other changes were made to his gameplay style. As part of a team attack, he can use what appears to be the "Light Attack". Like other Super Forms, Rings are needed in order to sustain the form.
Super Knuckles
By directly drawing on the power of the Chaos Emeralds or indirectly drawing on their power via Super Sonic, Knuckles the Echidna can become Super Knuckles. As Super Knuckles, Knuckles does not change color, but merely glows and is surrounded by an aura. Originally a pink energy field, the aura is now a golden sphere of energy. His dreadlocks float as if he were standing above a large fan.

Like other transformed characters, Super Knuckles is faster, stronger, "invulnerable" to attack, gains the ability to hover, and ultimately fly. His physical strength easily surpasses that of Super Sonic. In fact, his strength is increased to the point where he can effortlessly punch air with enough force to create explosions, and destroy battleships while remaining unscathed. As part of a team attack, he can use the "Maximum Heat Knuckles Attack" without the need for the "Fighting Gloves" power up. Super Knuckles must keep rings to sustain the form. When he runs out of rings, he reverts back to his normal form.
Super Shadow
<!--Note to editors: The color description here is the result of a consensus. ALL changes without citation WILL be reverted as vandalism!-->
By directly drawing on the power of the Chaos Emeralds or indirectly drawing on their power via Super Sonic, Shadow the Hedgehog can become Super Shadow. In this form, his black fur changes into a metallic lemon cream color. He also radiates an aura of golden chaos energy, and the flames from his shoes turn purple. Super Shadow first appears in the final battle of Sonic Adventure 2. Like other super characters, Shadow requires rings in order to maintain this super form.
In Super form, Shadow gains the traditional effects of a Super Form. He retains all of his normal abilities including his Chaos Powers, but they are amplified to much higher magnitudes. Although able to air dash, he may also make the same powered dashes as Super Sonic. Using his hand, he is able to fire Chaos Spears as either rapid small blasts, or a single charged up blast of energy.
In Sonic Adventure 2, Super Shadow appeared to be a metallic champagne color during game play. This led to an ongoing debate on what color he was as there were various descriptions of the color. <!--(need a source)However, this was caused by a graphical processing error in the Dreamcast during the battle.fact -->This was changed in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, and Super Shadow has since appeared as a metallic lemon cream color.
<!--(need a source for this too)Super Shadow is also mistakenly called "Hyper Shadow" due to a printing error in a strategy guide.-->

Burning Blaze
Much like the users of the Chaos Emeralds, Blaze the Cat can use the Sol Emeralds to transform into a Super form called Burning Blaze. As Burning Blaze, Blaze's lavender fur becomes pink, and the details on the tip of her ponytail are erased. Her jacket and the tip of her tail become red, and the bottom rim of her jacket turns yellow. The cuffs on her gloves and shoes are engulfed in pink flames, and she is surrounded by an aura of fire.
Blaze gains the same abilities as a normal Super Form. She can also use charged dashes, and can generate and throw fireballs. However, her charged dashes are not the same as Super Sonic's and Super Shadow's. The fire is behind her (as opposed to in front of her) which results in a loss of invulnerability and she cannot dash through lasers.

Super Silver
By either direct contact with the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds, or indirect contact via another Super Form, Silver the Hedgehog is able to transform into Super Silver. In Super Form, Silver's fur becomes a white gold color, and his quills float in the same fashion as Super Knuckles'. Silver's mane also becomes a deep gold. He also appears to have red eyes.
In addition to the standard Super Transformation power ups, Silver's telekinetic powers also have an improved range. This allows the player to grab objects from a farther distance. He is also able to use charged dashes. Like all Super Forms, the power is Ring dependent. As such, Silver will revert to normal form if he runs out of Rings.
Hyper Forms
Seen only in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, a Hyper Form is an "ascended" version of the Super Form. It requires that all seven of the Chaos Emeralds be collected and reactivated in their powered up state as the Super Emeralds. The character must also have been able to achieve a Super Form with the Chaos Emeralds. Otherwise, they will simply gain a Super Form.
A Hyper Form shares all of the traits of a Super Form and enables a character specific attack. The character also now leaves afterimages in its wake. There is a significant increase in strength over the Super Form. <!--Do not bring back the retcon statement. It is only speculation-->
Hyper Sonic
With the power of the Super Emeralds, Sonic the Hedgehog becomes Hyper Sonic. Hyper Sonic glows with the colors of the Chaos Emeralds, and is surrounded by flashing sparks. His abilities are identical to Super Sonic's, though he can breathe underwater and has the added ability of a devastating lightning attack. This can be used to "double jump" in any direction and when performed, destroys all enemies on-screen, except bosses, with a bright flash. Unlike the game's Lightning and Flame Shield, the player may choose the direction of Hyper Sonic's second jump by holding a direction on the D-pad.
Hyper Knuckles
When Knuckles uses the Chaos Emeralds in their transformed state as the Super Emeralds, he becomes Hyper Knuckles. This form has the exact same appearance as Super Knuckles except for the afterimage effect. He has the traits of a Super Form, but is much more powerful. By touching a wall during gliding, he creates a powerful shock wave that destroys all surrounding enemies. He is also incapable of drowning.
Associated Theme Songs
