==$10,000 donation to Wikimedia==
{{Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Templates/Navigation}}
On October 10th, the W. Glen Boyd charitable foundation donated [http://fundraising.wikimedia.org/ongoing/index.php/2006-10-10/detail/ $10,000] to Wikimedia. Maybe this is worthy of a mention on the Signpost, even if it's a little late. &mdash; <small>[[User:Brian0918|<b><font color=black>BRIAN</font></b>]][[User_talk:Brian0918|<font color=gray>0918</font>]] &bull; 2006-11-08 18:51Z</small>

== Calendar of upcoming events ==
I intend this to be a sort of calendar of upcoming events, on and off Wikipedia (particularly non-obvious events, that might be easily missed) -- things that readers might be interested in. Anyone can add events here.

* Nothing interesting is happening.

== Requests for WikiProject features ==
If you'd like your WikiProject featured in an upcoming WikiProject report, feel free to list it here. Note that these requests are entirely advisory, and may or may not be used in future reports. Please do not "support" or "oppose" individual requests, and keep requests '''short and concise'''. [[User:Ral315|Ral315]] ([[User talk:Ral315|talk]]) 05:51, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

* [[WP:ORE|WikiProject Oregon]] is a lively and productive project that currently supports over 5000 articles, and has a dedicated core group of editors who work toward getting articles to GA and FA. Currently we are [[Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Oregon#Dissed by the OHS!|working on a response]] to the [[Oregon Historical Society]]'s announcement that they are starting a collaborative encyclopedia project that will somehow be better than Wikipedia. *I think [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Categories/uncategorized]] might be a nice success-story to include in some edition of the Signpost. Various gnomes have hacked away at this backlog ever since bots like [[User:Alaibot|Alaibot]] started populating it a year and a half ago. Of course, this is a never-ending task but it's an important one and the backlog typically hovers around 2000 articles (compared to 10 times that a year ago). ::The ''Signpost'' and ''Wikizine'' often work together and collaborate; both serve as news outlets for the community, but the ''Signpost'' is targeted toward English Wikipedia, while ''Wikizine'' is targeted toward more of international news. Walter has been doing a great job with Wikizine, and I encourage people to read that as well for more focus on other non-English and non-Wikipedia projects. Is there any way you think we can help improve its visibility? :::Oh, I am sure the Wikizine is a wonderful thing - I see you mentioned it back in March in [[Wikipedia talk:Wikipedia Signpost#Wikisource News]] but it must have passed me by. Perhaps it deserves some publicity in a Signpost article? -- [[User:ALoan|ALoan]] [[User talk:ALoan|(Talk)]]

:::::: Not really, as most of the info is now being done in the [[:foundation:|Foundation Wiki]]. :::::It's my understanding that this is not exactly the case. While the steady stream of donations is helpful and has allowed the site to survive longer without an official fundraiser, recent increases in traffic (notably with the resumption of the school year) have again strained Wikimedia's resources, and the Foundation really needs more than just the existing financial reserves to address this. --[[User:Michael Snow|Michael Snow]] 05:02, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

::: Surely it would depend upon the time of day. The US would of course dominate during the hours when the Western hemisphere is most active. Also, the tool only tracks anonymous edits, and doesn't include IPs that can't be tied down to a single country, which may introduce unintentional biases. While it won't appeal to ''everyone'', a "Vandalism Report" section might be useful. ''The Internet-based encyclopædia Wikipedia has grown to become one of the most visited Web sites on the Internet, but critics have questioned the quality of entries. An empirical study of Wikipedia found errors in a 2005 sample of science entries. Biased coverage and lack of sources are among the “Wikipedia risks.” This paper describes a simple assessment of these aspects by examining the outbound links from Wikipedia articles to articles in scientific journals with a comparison against journal statistics from Journal Citation Reports such as impact factors. The results show an increasing use of structured citation markup and good agreement with citation patterns seen in the scientific literature though with a slight tendency to cite articles in high-impact journals such as Nature and Science. These results increase confidence in Wikipedia as a reliable information resource for science in general. Many citations also go to Australian botany journals, seemingly because of the [[WP:BANKSIA|Banksia Wikiproject]] that has made well-referenced articles for this genus of plants with the beautiful flowers. A number of the articles for these plants has become so-called “featured” on Wikipedia: [[Banksia integrifolia|Coast Banksia]], [[Banksia brownii|Brown's Banksia] (this Banksia is listed as endangered), [[Banksia ericifolia|Heath-leaved Banksia]] and [[Banksia epica]].''

Have you seen an article on wikipedia that needs a photograph but you can't travel a thousand miles to take it? Do you love taking pictures for the wiki but aren't sure what our needs are? An effort is underway at [[Wikipedia:Photo Matching Service]] to solve both problems by matching photographers with articles that need photos. Photographers can list themselves under the locations where they are able to take photos. Editors looking for photos can use [[Template:Reqphotoin]], add their request to the Photo Matching Service or contact one of the photographers listed on that page (or all three). "[http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/04/18/encyclopedia-britannica-now-free-for-bloggers/ Encyclopedia Britannica Now Free For Bloggers]", by Michael Arrington, discusses Britannica's new widget trial program, [http://britannicanet.com/?page_id=15 Britannica WebShare], in which web publishers of various sorts are given free access to the full version of Britannica online, and the ability to link to individual articles for their readers to access. Most news coverage is describing this as an attempt to cope with what Wikipedia has done to their business model.

I suggest that the ''Signpost'' attempt to sign up as a web publisher, so that we could start a new feature of weekly in-depth comparison's of individual articles. It's a long shot whether they would accept us simply because we're part of their competition, but the ''Signpost'' would seem to fall within their definition of who is eligible for the program.--[[User:Ragesoss|ragesoss]] ([[User talk:Ragesoss|talk]]) 16:55, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
== Depth ==

:I am a bit confused why the possibility to link to a full article is being touted as news - this has already been possible for a long time, actually without the need to sign up as a web publisher. I am not sure when I saw that invitation to web masters on the EB site first, but I recall that this kind of free access had already been enabled when I made [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Errors_in_the_Encyclop%C3%A6dia_Britannica_that_have_been_corrected_in_Wikipedia&diff=148180326&oldid=147959280 this edit] in July 2007. [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Linksearch&target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.britannica.com%2Feb%2F&namespace=&limit=500&offset=0 Many Wikipedia articles] already use this.
Maybe this could make a little blurb in the next issue: [[User:Mutante|Mutante]]'s [http://s23.org/wikistats/ a set of multilingual statistics scripts], some of which are used on Meta ([[m:List of Wikipedias]], for example), has added a new way to gauge the relative quality of a Wikipedia language edition: ''depth''. It's calculated as:
:By the way, last time I checked it didn't work for links on a preview page; you had to actually save the page. This probably means that they do not trust the [[HTTP referer]] alone, but check the page given there to verify that it actually links to the Britannica URL. (Or that someone at Britannica has taken some time to study MediaWiki URLs.)
:Regards, [[User:High on a tree|High on a tree]] ([[User talk:High on a tree|talk]]) 17:49, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

::Thanks for the clarification. Maybe the only difference is that they are adding free 1-year subscriptions for "web publishers" to encourage more people to link to their (excessively ad-filled) articles. Some articles were describing this as part of a soft launch. In any case, now might be a good time to start a regular ''Signpost'' feature comparing specific articles.--[[User:Ragesoss|ragesoss]] ([[User talk:Ragesoss|talk]]) 19:08, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
:<math>\frac{edits}{articles}\times\frac{pages-articles}{articles}</math>

== User interface changes ==
For Wikipedias with less than 1,000 articles, a depth of more than 200 isn't counted. If you'd like something more mathematical-looking (and thus more impressive):

Two changes were recently made:
:<math>\tfrac{e}{a^2}(p-a) : a \ge 1000 \lor \tfrac{e}{a^2}(p-a) \le 200</math>

*{{tl|talkheader}} was changed on 8 April; it now automatically includes links to archive subpages, assuming the archive subpages are numbered in the standard manner (Archive 1, Archive 2, etc.). ([[Template talk:Talkheader#Please see my proposed change at VPR|Discussion]].) That means it is no longer necessary to add the {{tl|archive box}} template to a page in order to provide links to archive subpages (again, if named in the standard manner).
But really, it's just a small way of deemphasizing the article count as an indicator of a Wikipedia edition's progress.

When the Wikiscanner came out last summer, three weeks of worldwide headlines proved that we weren't keeping our own house in order. That ought to have been a big eye opener; it wasn't. If it were reasonably certain that a campaign like this one would be caught - and swiftly - by Wikipedians, then this wouldn't be so much of a problem. ::I know very well who [[User:Anthere|Anthere]] is. I was [http://wikimania2006.wikimedia.org/wiki/Proceedings:LP1 presenting at Wikimania], after all. :-) But my point stands. As stated elsewhere in those comments, I have seen very little in the way of female leadership in my area of specific expertise, separate wiki projects. I've not seen women going out there and starting projects, while at the same time I '''have''' seen them making very good ''contributions''. Many seem to prefer to take on roles adding content rather than be the head. I think there has to be a reason why this is, and I want to know why, and if it needs to be (or even can be) changed. Conversely, I am ''not'' a Wikipedia expert, but I have read on the list that there has been little interest from women in recent elections. [[User:Mindspillage|Mindspillage]] stands out as one counter-example that I know of, in the candidacy for the board - but the fact that she stands out is somewhat concerning to me. Another thing to consider is [[User:Angela|Angela]]'s [http://mail.wikimedia.org/pipermail/foundation-l/2006-July/008167.html statement] for why she left the board - "...the collaborative consensus-based nature Wikimedia had before the start of this year continues to deteriorate and it's no longer an environment I can work effectively in." I don't know if this is the sort of thing the Signpost runs, but just in case ... Wikipedia plays a minor but noticeable role in Fowler's latest novel, ''Wit's End''. The novel includes (on pages 144 to 146) the text (somewhat modified) of a real article from Wikipedia, [[Holy City, California]], illustrating what the protagonist finds as she researches Holy City on Wikipedia. Another major character, a fictional mystery writer named A.B. Early, is involved in a minor edit war over her own article. Fowler is most notable as the author of ''[[The Jane Austen Book Club]]''. It seems like there has been a flood of media attention lately to Wikipedia's notability and deletion policies and practices. Maybe an article summarizing and synthesizing the public reactions is in order. Literary agent Barbara Bauer sued over alleged defamation that occurred in the Wikipedia article about her (now deleted because of NPOV, BLP and reliable sourcing concerns, after a heated debate during the second deletion discussion). == 2006 Fundraiser will feature matched gifts ==

==New magic word: PAGESIZE==
I saw your coverage of the upcoming fundraised, and thought I should add that it comes with two significant differences from the previous ones. These were [http://wikipediaweekly.com/2006/12/11/wikipedia-weekly-9-new-board-members/ reported] by [[User:Danny|Danny Wool]] in Episode 9 of [[WP:WWPC|Wikipedia Weekly]], at the 21:00 mark.
A new magic word was recently implemented, but not covered in Wikipedia Signpost. <code><nowiki>{{PAGESIZE:page name}}</nowiki></code> returns the size of the given page name ([[bugzilla:12698|bug 12698]], r33551). This contributes to a page's expensive parser function count. For example:
#It will featured ''matched gifts'', where companies match specific days' donations one-for-one, potentially doubling the revenue generated on any given day.
* "<code><nowiki>{{PAGESIZE:Main Page}}</nowiki></code>" = "4,769" (default);
#The Foundation will be using the money to set up revenue-generating schemes for the future, to reduce the Foundation's dependence on donations by making some money for itself.
* "<code><nowiki>{{PAGESIZE:Main Page|R}}</nowiki></code>" = "4769" (with raw flag).

::Before jumping up and down and saying how wonderful Time's choice is, be aware that there is some pretty loud (though not necessarily significant) criticism of the choice being bandied about among some pundits and commentators that "You" was a bad choice, a weak choice (currently on Fox News ... The [[Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America]] (CAMERA) has been engaged in a campaign (the subject of a recently accepted [[Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/CAMERA lobbying|Arbcom case]]) to fight against alleged anti-Israel bias in Wikipedia, including attempts to install administrators who can help enforce CAMERA's viewpoint. ''The Boston Globe'' (CAMERA is based in Boston) is running an article, [http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/articles/2008/05/03/war_of_the_virtual_wiki_worlds/ War of the virtual Wiki-worlds], on the CAMERA campaign and the efforts of the pro-Palestinian [[Electronic Intifada]] to expose and discredit the campaign.

CAMERA also published an article today, [http://www.camera.org/index.asp?x_context=2&x_outlet=118&x_article=1485 How and Why to Edit Wikipedia], publicly encouraging CAMERA readers to become Wikipedia editors. On a quick review, I notice nothing too out-of-hand in this article (in contrast to some of the leaked correspondence described in the ''Boston Globe'' piece).
