== Redirect issue/deletion request ==
==Can anyone help me correct the article?==

Hi, can an admin please help delete the redirect from [[Qasim Shesho]] to [[Haydar Shesho]]? They are two different people:
Help! I'm new here and it says that my added article might be deleted. What do I do? Can anyone help me correct the article? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bimbo_Boy <email removed> [[User_talk:InnocentBoy|InnocentBoy talk]] 00:01, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
Qasim Shesho is the Uncle of Haydar Shesho
:I expanded the [[Bimbo Boy]] article. -- [[User:Jreferee|Jreferee]] 17:26, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

The current redirect is incorrect and blocks my article. Thanks! [[User:Kuripenjwen|Kuripenjwen]] ([[User talk:Kuripenjwen|talk]]) 22:18, 28 April 2025 (UTC)
== How do I revert an edit and its history? ==

:Hi @[[User:Kuripenjwen|Kuripenjwen]], it looks like you've already created the draft page. This draft would go through the AfC draft approval process before being moved to replace the existing mainspace redirect. Once the draft is accepted for mainspace, the existing redirect would be tagged for deletion and it would be replaced with the approved draft (at that point in mainspace). I did add [[Template:R with Possibilities]] to the redirect page per [[WP:Drafts]] <span style="background:#FFFBCD">[[User:Jiltedsquirrel|<span style="color:#0000E6;font-family:Georgia">Jiltedsquirrel 🌰</span>]] ([[User talk:Jiltedsquirrel|''talk'']] &#124;&#124; [[Special:Contributions/Jiltedsquirrel|''contribs'']])</span> 23:30, 28 April 2025 (UTC)
I accidentally submitted an edit without logging in, and now my IP address is displayed, which I understand is bad because of possible hackers. How do I get that edit and my IP deleted from the history page? I have tried everything!
::Hi @Jiltedsquirrel, thanks for the info! I wanted to manually move it to mainspace, The current redirect link stops me from doing so and deleting it won’t cause issues [[User:Kuripenjwen|Kuripenjwen]] ([[User talk:Kuripenjwen|talk]]) 23:35, 28 April 2025 (UTC)
:You can't, really. If you're really horribly off the wall dying desperate, you could place a message at the [[WP:AN|Administrators Noticeboard]], and an admin could perma revert it. Two things, though: be very specific about which article and which edit, and do so post-haste, because if someone else changes the article first, I really doubt the admins would comply. -[[User:Patstuart|Patstuart]][[User_talk:Patstuart|talk]]|[[Special:contributions/Patstuart|edits]] 00:03, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
:::Ah! There are instructions present for this situation on [[WP:Drafts]] as well, but you may need to make a request at [[WP:RMTR]] if you're unable to complete the move yourself. Instructions for how to make a request there are present at the top of the page. <span style="background:#FFFBCD">[[User:Jiltedsquirrel|<span style="color:#0000E6;font-family:Georgia">Jiltedsquirrel 🌰</span>]] ([[User talk:Jiltedsquirrel|''talk'']] &#124;&#124; [[Special:Contributions/Jiltedsquirrel|''contribs'']])</span> 23:45, 28 April 2025 (UTC)

:[[User:Kuripenjwen|Kuripenjwen]], why not simply submit [[Draft:Qasim Shesho]] for review? -- [[User:Hoary|Hoary]] ([[User talk:Hoary|talk]]) 00:35, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
:The most private way to delete it would be Oversight, which deletes edits so that only a ''very'' few users ([[Special:Listusers/oversight|these 23]]) can see it. However this is not a condition where Oversight should be used. It may be possible for me to remove the edit so only administrators ([[Special:Listusers/sysop|these 1,080 users]]) can see it. This depends on how recently the edit was made, and whether the page has been edited since then. If you show me the edit in question, I will tell you if I can remove it. [[User:Prodego|<font color="darkgreen">''Prodego''</font>]] [[User talk:Prodego|<font color="darkgreen">talk</font>]] 00:09, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
::Because that takes way longer than me just manually moving it now if the redirect link gets deleted. Of course these are two different people it should be removed please. [[User:Kuripenjwen|Kuripenjwen]] ([[User talk:Kuripenjwen|talk]]) 00:38, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
:Don't be paranoid. Leaving your IP in public is perfectly okay. [[User:WP|WP]] 03:56, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
:::But [[User:Kuripenjwen|Kuripenjwen]], drafts that already are obviously good enough to become articles are, from what I observe, typically accepted pretty quickly. Now that I look at this draft, I wonder. It cites just two sources, and one of these is ''Vice''. "[[Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Perennial_sources#Vice|There is no consensus on the reliability of Vice Media publications.]]" So why not first improve the draft and then submit it? -- [[User:Hoary|Hoary]] ([[User talk:Hoary|talk]]) 01:03, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
::::Alright [[User:Hoary|Hoary]] but the current redirect [[Qasim Shesho]] → [[Haydar Shesho]] is factually incorrect (they are uncle/nephew). This needs correction regardless of the draft status. I've requested deletion at [[Wikipedia:Requested_moves/Technical_requests]]. And i will take your advice and improve the draft [[User:Kuripenjwen|Kuripenjwen]] ([[User talk:Kuripenjwen|talk]]) 01:15, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
:::::[[User:Kuripenjwen|Kuripenjwen]], for future reference, you can request deletion of a redirect at [[Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion]]. There is some guidance on the page you should read before making a nomination. The current redirect [[Qasim Shesho]] → [[Haydar Shesho]] doesn't imply they are the same person, it just means that you can find some information about QS on HS's page. [[User:TSventon|TSventon]] ([[User talk:TSventon|talk]]) 03:49, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
:::::[[User:Kuripenjwen|Kuripenjwen]], putting aside questions about the reliability of ''Vice'' in general, the ''Vice'' page you cite is based on one or more discussions with the subject of the article. The ''Rudaw'' page you cite ''is'' an interview with him -- or so it seems (I haven't listened to it). An article would also need to cite disinterested sources about him. -- [[User:Hoary|Hoary]] ([[User talk:Hoary|talk]]) 06:16, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
:::::@[[User:Kuripenjwen|Kuripenjwen]] The existing redirect is not "factually incorrect." If there is no existing article for a person, it is common to have a redirect to a target page that mentions the person. Although he is not mentioned by name, there is a reference to "his uncle" in the article [[Haydar Shesho]]. == So are y'all going to rawdog it or? ==
== A friends Artical is being remove by one of your Admins ==

Starting from around July-September 2025, [[:vi:Sáp_nhập_tỉnh,_thành_Việt_Nam_2025|a nationwide merge]] and changing of hierarchy of literally every single administrative division would be underway in [[Vietnam]]; such as shrinking the province count from 54 to 34, etc.
A friends Artical is being remove by one of your Admins, and the 2 seem to be at Logger heads over the guidelines. I will not take part in who is right or who is wrong, after all My friend and your Admins are volunteers trying to help others. But I want to be sure that my IP address, where my friend sometimes posts from is not in anyway blocked, and I ask if this Admin does try to block it that the block removed POST HASTE in the interests of fairness!!

Has enwiki reached a consensus regarding what it should do about the articles about administrative divisions here? There's an ongoing discussion over at vi.wiki [[:vi:Thảo_luận_Wikipedia:Dự_án/Hành_chính_Việt_Nam|here]], you guys can read them for reference [[User talk:-tynjee|tynjee]] 18:46, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
I take advantage of your service alot, and I want to be sure no improper and unwarrented actions are taken agaist my IP AT ANY TIME by over zelouse persons, on your admin staff or my friends.

== Is there a tool or process to copy images hosted on Commons to Wikipedia? ==
Can I ask a question? If I found out that that an Admin had listed my IP address, how can I have it removed? I DONT want my IP address visable to wikipedia community at larger. What is happening that my IP address can be listed without my expressed consent.

Hi all
I DEMAND in no uncertain terms that it be DELATED POST HASTE. If my IP address is listed it a violation of my right to privacy, but also gives would be hackers access to my network and files.

Some images taken in France are being discussed for deletion [[:c:Commons:Deletion requests/Files found with UNESCO headquarters|here]] because there is no freedom of panorama in France. I understand from [[Template:Freedom of panorama (US only)|this template]] that these images would be allowed on Wikipedia. Please could someone tell me if there's a tool or process to copy them across?
Please check this site for my IP address and if it is listed by any Admin, I want the IP address delated and the Admin that censored.

Thanks
Thank All Admins that look into this, I am postive you know how I feel about this vurnerability to my security.

:I [[Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Converting Commons image to fair use|asked the same thing on WP:VPT recently]] and was directed to https://wikifile-transfer.toolforge.org/ - however, every time I try using it, including just now, I get an "error 500" (which I have reported on its GitHub page, with no response as yet). <span class="vcard"><span class="fn">[[User:Pigsonthewing|Andy Mabbett]]</span> (<span class="nickname">Pigsonthewing</span>); [[User talk:Pigsonthewing|Talk to Andy]]; [[Special:Contributions/Pigsonthewing|Andy's edits]]</span> 12:39, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
This is the page that lead to the dispute, and the Admin that listed my IP address. I was in no way involved in this dispute, and yet it is my IP address that Admin listed, and I cant figure out who the Admin is to go though proper channels to get him to correct his Mistake:

What should I do if I see a problematic user ({{np2|Ultra 348}}) who has repeated final warnings on their talk page and has been brought to ANI before (though the thread became stale) continue to not use edit summaries and other problematic behavior for which they have already been warned multiple times? Since I have never been directly involved with the user, I don't think that bringing up another ANI discussion would be appropriate, especially as I have never been there before. I'm also not sure I want to put in the effort to find all the diffs for their problematic behavior, which stretches back to 2023. If there is a better venue to bring this up, please point me in the right direction. :You can do a regex search. For example, the section {{slink|Paganism|Ethnic religions of pre-Christian Europe}} is linked from two other articles as shown by [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=insource%3A%2F%5C%23Ethnic+religions+of+pre-Christian+Europe%2F&ns0=1 this search]: [[Middle Ages]] and [[Religion in the European Union]].
:Mind the punctuation in the search string: must begin and end with <code>/</code> and the octothorpe must be escaped: <code>\#</code>; do not use underscores in place of space characters.

== Goldierocks Article- how to refrence correctly when I believe it is already fully sourced? ==

Hello all,
The said article 'Goldierocks' has been proposed for deletion although it is fully refrenced, sourced and well written. How and where should I edit it so that this doesn't happen? What does Wikipedia feel is in-corret?

I created the article Godwin Ubaka Okeke and It was recently marked for speedy deletion. My question here is... can I rewrite the article or will that cause my harm. [[user:Akwugo|Akwugo]] ([[user talk: Akwugo|talk]]) 11:54, 5 May 2025 (UTC)
This is a rare but very useful article on one of the leading UK DJs of 2006 and essential for press/public reference.

This feels like a bit of a silly question to have to ask, but I had a look in Preferences and couldn't find any relevant settings so I thought I'd ask here just to make sure. Is there a way to stop edits from automatically being published if you press the [[return key]] while typing in the [[H:ES|edit summary]] box? I keep accidentally publishing edits when I was just trying to press the right [[square bracket]] key, so end up publishing incomplete edit summaries and having to make [[H:SUMMARYONLY|dummy edits]] to clarify. Is there any way to prevent this? (Other than just improving my [[fine motor skill]]s, of course.) Thank you! :) [[User:Pineapple Storage|Pineapple Storage]] ([[User talk:Pineapple Storage|talk]]) 18:33, 5 May 2025 (UTC)
:Though you have referenced some sources for the [[Goldierocks]] article, the editor that put the tag there does not feel that they are reliable. You should read the page that was linked to, which was [[WP:RS]].
:I don't know about the references since I really didn't get very far into the article before I found other things wrong with it such as the use of the term "vixen". This doesn't present a neutral point of view. Please see [[WP:NPOV]] to address this concern.
:And finally, you mention that the article is essential for press reference. [[WP:NOT]] will explain that Wikipedia is not an advertising medium. This is an encyclopedia, not a free forum for advertising. For instance, the page on [[Coca-Cola]] does not say "It's the greatest drink ever!"

I would like to know EVERY SINGLE TIME I enter factual information into an article that it gets erased and I keep getting warnings about my information being non-factual? I recently made changes to the "Civil Engineer" article. I work as a Civil Engineer and I can assure you that the "Fundamentals of Engineering" examination is widely known as the "Engineer in Training", but alas it was removed and I get another warning. You guys perpetuate an atmosphere of user editing...to add facts where they are missing. However I recently received a final warning for telling the truth. That is a crock and I would like to know why I am being singled out for telling the truth? {{unsigned|12.201.19.242}}

Hello! If it would be possible, I'd like to speak in a private channel with a wikipedia administrator(s) to request assistance in a certain matter. If anyone could provide any info on how to go about this, it would be appreciated.
:Looking at your last edit, on this IP, it doesn't look like the addition was that bad, and the vandal warning you received was probably a bit excessive as a first warning. I would suggest going to the talk page of the articles in question and discussing the additions you'd like to make, then waiting for other editors to discuss any concerns they may have with it. You may want to find a [[WP:RS|reliable source]] for your addition before putting it directly into the article; we can't use information that comes from personal knowledge. Cheers. Hi all
== Help with grammar ==

I'm not sure where is best to ask this question, hopefully someone here can help. I'm looking at translating some species articles, specifically the species articles for [[Tsetse fly]] eg [[Glossina longipennis]] into French and maybe Italian. However when I start to translate the article into French there are gaps where the infobox should be and I think also the authority control box at the bottom of the page that links out to external sources for the species. Does anyone know if these are missing because they are broken/not working, or are they just automagically converted including images so they don't need input from me?
Someone just added the following line to the article for ''[[Whipped Cream & Other Delights]]'' and due to my lack of knowledge about Italian radio, I'm having a hard time figuring out what it's supposed to say.
<blockquote>
""A Taste of Honey" is the introductory music of a very famous Italian radiophonic transmission: "All soccer every minute", in wave every Sunday commenting Italian soccer championship."
</blockquote>
If someone could edit the page so that it makes a bit more sense, please do! I'm particularly stuck on what the word "wave" means in this context. <tt>[[User:Dismas|Dismas]]</tt>|[[User talk:Dismas|(talk)]] 13:30, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
:Try "in wave" -> "broadcast", "commenting" -> "commenting on the". [[User:Notinasnaid|Notinasnaid]] 18:45, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

I could just translate the article and then publish it, but I don't have enough of an understand of French Wikipedia to be able to fix any issues that come out the other end.
I substituted the following:
<blockquote>
"A Taste of Honey" is the introductory music of a famous Italian radio programme: ":it:Tutto il calcio minuto per minuto" literally "All soccer minute by minute", broadcast every Sunday with match commentaries and the latest scores from Italian football. </blockquote> I hope this is what was meant. :If you haven't already, refer to [[Wikipedia:Translate us]] for detailed instructions. Be aware that different language Wikipedias may use different templates, etc., so ones that work here may not there, as that page's '''Handmade''' section, Point 6 mentions.

::The pedias of different languages ''do'' use different templates. [[:fr:Modèle:Automatic taxobox]] (if this is how it's translated) simply doesn't exist; and even if it did exist, viewing it after automated translation of its content would probably be a hideous experience as the names for the attributes/fields (and probably not just their names) within the template would differ. :I think it would be sensible to ask about this on French Wikipedia too—that's where the people will be who have experience of articles translated into French, what infoboxes they have and so on.{{pb}}Maybe I should also note in passing that the standard practice among professional translators used to be that one should only translate into one's own language. Could someone tell me what the arrow symbol below at the right means when Wikipedia places it at the beginning of a line in an article we're editing? I've seen it several times off and on now, and although I seem to be able to delete it I'd like to know why it comes.

Hello,
:Hi [[User:Augnablik|Augnablik]] - I've never seen it in one of our articles, are you using the mobile or desktop version? - I assume it is a carriage return (enter) symbol, that has been copy-pasted in from another application. We used to get lots of obj in a dotted rectangles, from a similar problem. - [[User:Arjayay|Arjayay]] ([[User talk:Arjayay|talk]]) 10:46, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
::As far as I recall, @[[User:Arjayay|Arjayay]], it’s come just on my computer. Can’t swear to that, though.
::I too thought of a carriage return — even though laptops no longer have carriages! — but considering each case, I couldn’t imagine why the symbol would be placed there.

:::Hi [[User:Augnablik|Augnablik]], if you go back in one of the affected pages' history, and re-open the version you saw it on, is it still there? If so, you could try opening it on another device, which would determine if it is your computer/browser. ::::Arjayay, I went back as you suggested and checked a lot of earlier versions of the article in which I think I saw one of those symbols most recently — but no luck. I remember that I often deleted the symbol when I'd see it, though.

== Use of 'single source' and 'unbalanced' tags when only one POV is documented ==
I am interested in placing information about our graduate program on wikipedia as other schools such as Boston University and Duke have. How would I go about doing this? Would I simply create an account and add this information as an article or a page? Or should I be doing something else.

I'm looking at the article [[Huck's Defeat]]. It used to have a single source tag based on almost exclusive use of a book by Scoggins. The tag was removed, claiming a "new" source. However, that book is just a rehash of the same information.
Thanks,

The article still has only one point of view. Scoggins, Pell, and Edgar are all reading from the same prayer book. So to me, single source still applies even if a technical argument says it doesn't. So how can the bias inherent in the article be indicated? Should it be indicated at all, when only one side of the story is available? Would the unbalanced tag apply, instead, even when only one side of a story is available?

The guide says "An unbalanced article is one that does not fairly represent the balance of perspectives of high-quality, reliable secondary sources." The primary sources about this American revolutionary war event are all from the Whig side. The secondary sources, as a result, only cover one side of the battle. Added to that, the secondary sources are all of the same lineage; that is, all written by South Carolina historians who say this was the turning point of the war. The article ignores primary reports which show the Whigs negatively. In other words, "our" side won so it isn't labelled "a massacre".

Someone with unlimited time might be able to rewrite the article to make it more neutral, but I don't have that luxury. My intention is simply to alert other editors to tackle it when they can.
hello,
I recently submitted a question on the Language discussion board. I forgot to put my signature on it and it also has no "edit" button at the end like the other posts above it have. Does this mean that no one will be able to respond to my post? Also, how can I go back and add my signature?

::Good suggestion. You can also post at [[WP:NPOVN]]. If you're correct about "The secondary sources, as a result, only cover one side of the battle", then you might want to prepare yourself for the possibility that the article should stay as it is. Our role is to summarize reliable secondary sources, so we will by design often echo the bias of such sources. :No, anyone can respond at the reference desk. Also, please don't delete what other people have written - it's considered rude or even vandalism. In Google Earth near the Matterhorn is a blob which claims to be caused by a link to Wikipedia. The link is to [[Bukit Batu Buli]] which is a mountain in Sarawak, not northern Italy. Let's say, as an example, The Organization for the Advancement of Video Games published a list of what they considered the top ten video games. [[User:Foxjwill|Foxjwill]] 19:46, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
: Well, if their list was titled as such (their own opinions) and their explanations were given (in summary or quote) and a source was cited, then I see it as being perfectly reasonable and not at all POV, nor Original research. [[User:Mason11987|Chris M.]] 19:48, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

:And if TOfAoVG was considered a notable enough organisation, then the inclusion of a game on the list might be worthy of mentioning on the game's page in the form "The Organization for the Advancement of Video Games placed Riverdance: The Game sixth on its list of Top Ten Video Games{{tl|cite}}". ::Obviously, there's a quantity of research involved, plus the task of forming a suitable page structure (headings, pictures, infoboxes, what to say, etc.), so I would recommend first typing your article in a word processor prior to pasting it into the text box and adding the Wiki formatting for links, text styles and so on. Whenever I try to log in normally, Wikipedia rejects my password. Am having similar problem this evening. Wikipedia would not accept my password. Had new one emailed. Wiki accepted it, but said I had to change it to complete login process. After putting in new password twice, I got "incorrect password" notice. Password I had just created did not work in repeated tries. I again tried pw that had been emailed to me, it again was accepted and again gave me instructions to enter new pw. I created yet another pw, and it again did not work. Emailed pw no longer works, and another pw will not be mailed for 24 hours. This is all a bit discouraging. Username = Donquixote99

I (70.114.212.242) managed to fix this problem a little bit later; I use Firefox with the NoScript extension, and I was not allowing Wikipedia to use Javascript. Permitting this allowed me to log on normally. [[User:IanA|IanA]] 01:23, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

== Goof sections. ==

Seriously, are Goof sections allowed on articles about movies? I added a Goofs section to the article about the movie ''Titanic'' and someone removed it (and administrator, actually, claiming it was unencylcopedic). I was none too happy about this because I have added goofs sections to many other articles, and there have been no problems whatsoever. So now I'm downright confused... :That said, a "Goofs" section alone may not be encyclopedic if it's just a list of gaffes in the movie. Write that information into the article itself, and it becomes more acceptable. ==Question about proposed deletion process==
I have just proposed [[The Wanderers]] for deletion, and was about to notify the creators, when I realized that in fact they had coopted a redirect page. I can't quite figure out the right policy to handle this -- is this something I should just revert? I don't want to treat this as vandalism, so it seems politer to "go through channels" if I can figure out what channels to go through. Prod doesn't seem right as it should not be deleted, it should become a redirect again. What's the standard way to deal with this? [[User:Mike Christie|Mike Christie]] [[User_talk:Mike Christie|(talk)]] 05:10, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

== Collating sequences of double-barrelled & split surnames in categories etc... ==

If you have a surname such as "de Smith" (mine!), "von Something" etc., the standard collating sequences used in the category indices places the surname after "Z" as I presume straight ASCII/UNICODE/whatever is being used here.

What I believe should happen is that for surnames, the first UPPER CASE letter should be used as the start of the name, e.g. "de Smith" should be at the start of the "S" index (as it is in telephone books etc.).

Thoughts?

[[User:Nickds1|Nickds1]] 09:56, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
*It should, but since Wikipedia automatically changes the first letter to uppercase it can't be automated. Try sorting the articles by adding a sorting key in the category tag, like for example this: <nowiki>[[Category:Singers|Trapp, Kurt von]].</nowiki> That will make it sort to T instead of V. - [[User:MacGyverMagic|Mgm]]|[[User talk:MacGyverMagic|(talk)]] 10:12, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
*I have experienced different behaviour. Consider my usage of <nowiki>[[Category:Fellows of the British Academy|de Smith, Stanley]]</nowiki>. If you look at that category, you'll see that the "de" is not capitalised to "De" for collating, and that "de Smith" appears after "Z", not in the "D"s or "S"s. Thanks [[User:Nickds1|Nickds1]] 10:26, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
*The capitalization behavior I mentioned is only on article titles, I didn't know about how it behaved in cateogries, but it makes sense for the software to categorize on 'd' if you put 'de' at the start of the sortkey. If you start with 'Smith' instead it sorts under 'S'. I've altered the sorting of your latest article to illustrate what I mean. - [[User:MacGyverMagic|Mgm]]|[[User talk:MacGyverMagic|(talk)]] 10:43, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

== Template for a Customized (Alphabetized) table ==

Hi, I'm trying to find a way to create a template. The template would receive a list, say: Dan Abigail Chris Gloria etc... It will then take that list and build a 3 or 4 column (and as many rows as needed) table around it while alphabetizing the list. I've been digging around the Templates pages but haven't found anything already created or found anything to really help me create my own. If anyone has any suggestions or hints, I'd greatly appreciate it!

[[User:Savitar8|Savitar8]] 10:20, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
:I don't think it's possible; you can't alphabetize strings using [[m:ParserFunctions]], or get sortable tables to work correctly with the multiple columns you're asking for, and even if it were possible it would be hideously complicated and probably hit the maximum limit for template complexity. --[[User:ais523|ais523]] 11:04, 20 December 2006 ([[User:ais523|U]][[User talk:ais523|T]][[Special:Contributions/Ais523|C]])

== deleting images, changing copyright options ==

Hi,

I just submitted an image of a painting as an example for a paint medium, however
some things went wrong:
1. I chose the wrong option for copyright (I want the option "all rights reseved" instead I ended up with a GNU)
2. I wasn't able to link the image with the article
3. I wanted to delete the image and start again, but I couldn't see "delete" option anywhere

Please help.

N.B. I own the image.
::{{unsigned|December Blues| }} <!-- tagged by Mgm-->
:Do you mean that you ''painted'' the image yourself, or that someone else painted it, and you own either the copy or the original? This is quite important, and "all rights reserved" will just get your image deleted. [[User:Notinasnaid|Notinasnaid]] 10:42, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I painted the image. I own the original.
I just wanted to add it to the article as an example of a painting painted in the featured medium. It ended up in New Images gallery with a wrong option of copy right. I couldn't embed it in the article.

I see that some images have (c) copyrights reserved, red c sign which I couldn't see in the copyrights option box.. That's why I ended up with GNU in the first place..

You say: "all rights reserved" will just get your image deleted. " ; then which option should I chose?

If I can't get these things right I would like to delete the image of my painting.

Looking forwrd to yr reply.
:For self-created images, Wikipedia only permits [[free use]] licences; see [[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags]]. Images with fair-use copyrights (the 'all rights reserved' images) are generally only used in cases when a free-use image would be impossible to create (such as a photograph of a historical figure who is now dead); see [[Wikipedia:Fair use criteria]]. You should think about what licence you want to offer your image to Wikipedia under; all the accepted licences allow redistribution, creation of derivative works, and commercial use, so if you don't want to licence your image under these terms place {{tl|db-author}} on the image page to say that you uploaded it by mistake and request a deletion. --[[User:ais523|ais523]] 11:02, 20 December 2006 ([[User:ais523|U]][[User talk:ais523|T]][[Special:Contributions/Ais523|C]])

:::Going back one and a half million entries in the log only goes to August 2006. == Copyright for a composite map ==

I want to create, then upload, a map based on two maps, neither of which I own the copyright for.

From the internet, an old map shows the route of a disused canal.

From the internet, a current map shows the routes of all the roads that are near or on top of the route of the disused canal.

I'm planning to scale, rotate then superimpose the old map on top of the current map. Then, I'm planning to sketch/trace the routes of the current roads with the routes of the disused canal.

This sketch, which will contain NO images or text from either internet-sourced maps, will be the file to be uploaded into Wikipedia. I plan to release copyright for this sketch and make it freely available.

Am I allowed to do this? --[[User:ML5|ML5]] 12:52, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

:I'm not so sure that changing the form is a get out; to avoid copyright issues you have to start with public ___domain maps or survey things yourself. I have read of cases where map makers include small errors to catch out people who copy their map data (even into radically different layouts), and this has led to settlements. Possibly the copyright is on the creative work of the made up stuff, who knows. Anyway, the settlement was for 20 million pounds. Would a varied personal translation (into English), or a modification of an existing translation on Wikipedia, of a song or a poem in the English Wikipedia ''(in my case "Saare Jahan Se Achcha" by Iqbal)'', because it is personal, amount to '''unverifiable''' content as it is '''previously unpublished''', and is a matter of '''interpretation'''?

If so, then I suggest discussing it on [[Talk:Saare Jahan Se Achcha|the article's talk page]], and see if others agree. If no one agrees, then you might be mistaken. If others agree, then go ahead and change it. Hi,

I am a frequent user of Wikipedia and I was quite dismayed by the fact that Wikipedia did not acknowledge the anniversary of Operation "Just Cause" in Panama where thousands of panamanians died and the United States used its brutal force to once again politically rearrange a country in its favor. Regardless of whoever agrees ir disagrees with it, it should be noted, since its quite more significant than the transfer of power of Portugal to China(Macau) or the secession of North Carolina. Thanks so much.

Thank you for your suggestion! Since all the articles in Wikipedia were created by volunteers, we only have those articles which people have taken the time to write. When you feel an article needs to be created or improved, please feel free to make those changes. Wikipedia is a [[wiki]], so ''anyone'' can edit almost any article by simply following the '''{{MediaWiki:edit}}''' link at the top. == Distributing Text ==

<nowiki>What steps should I take to make sure my distribution of Wikipedia text is completely legal? My confusion in what I should really do stems from two parts of the GNU license: the text is "'free' in the sense of freedom: to assure everyone the effective freedom to copy and redistribute it, with or without modifying it, either commercially or noncommercially", "provided that this License, the copyright notices, and the license notice saying this License applies to the Document are reproduced in all copies, and that you add no other conditions whatsoever to those of this License. You may not use technical measures to obstruct or control the reading or further copying of the copies you make or distribute." What if I need to convert the text to a special file format? Could I still distribute the text then? Technically, could I charge for file format conversion of free text? Also, what should I include with each text? Is it necessary to indicate presence of the GNU license on each Document? Would it be good enough to include a link to the Wikipedia page the text was taken from at the end of the text? Lots of questions here, I know, but maybe there's a simple answer somewhere out there. Thanks in advance. ~~~~</nowiki>

The article still doesn't come up on a search. Has it been reviewed? (There is a decline notice that seems to be for a deleted article just below mine. It refers to copied material, which definitely does not refer to mine.) Is there something more I need to do?

I like using the template Cquote for quoting long passages and sentimental stuff because of the really neat looking supersized quotes. Today I arrive to continue my ongoing effort to improve the article [[USS Missouri (BB-63)]] and the quotes aint there. What gives? did someone mess with the picture quotes, or what? [[User:TomStar81|TomStar81]] ([[User talk:TomStar81|Talk]]) 06:54, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
:There are several problems with this template, but the most immediate reason why it was changed is that it creates problems for blind users, or any users, using screen readers. A stylistic preference for cartoon quotes does not over-ride making an accessible, educational encyclopedia. [[Template:Cquotetxt]] is another possibility, but one of the problems with this sort of quoting in general is that it sets aside a quote as being more important than the rest of the text, and is widely abused. —[[User:Centrx|Centrx]]→[[User talk:Centrx|''talk'']]&nbsp;&bull; 06:59, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
:(I edit too slow) There is some discussion on [[Template talk:Cquote]] about it. I'm pretty sure I added the <nowiki>{{copyvio}}</nowiki> tag to the [[Junaid Jamshed]] article, but it doesn't even show up in the article's history. == Adding a link ==

Hi there,

I had looked up driving simulator and saw the article on it. In the external links section there was a link that led to a page of simulator companies. My company happens to make a driving simulator for training purposes and I was wondering if it would be okay to add an external link to our site? I know the rules say that you can't link to a site for selling purposes but you can link to a site that's appropriate to the article. Our business is definitely appropriate to the article but still may not be suitable for posting. Since there's a link to a whole list of driving simulator companies, of which we're not listed, I wanted to see if we could list ourselves? I have emailed the person who put the list together to see if they'd add us but I have yet to hear back from them. I don't want to violate any rules and am not sure how to proceed so I thought I'd check first before doing anything. Thanks!

:What's the link to that page? Sounds like some pruning is in order. [[User:Xiner|Xiner]] ([[User talk:Xiner|talk]], [[Special:Emailuser/Xiner|email]]) 17:44, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Do a search for Driving Simulators and you'll see the link listed below under External Links.

:Ok, I see the link goes to "a state-financed scientific and technological body", which seems legitimate. The page being in France, however, unfortunately misses out on your company. I'd say write to that website and try to get your company listed there. If you try to insert your link on the Wikipedia page, you'll probably get a warning. I'm contemplating creating a Wiki on my website. Most of the content there has no business being in Wikipedia (hence my own wiki) but there will be some articles that are appropriate to be in Wikipedia. In the category page 'Characters in The Lord of the Rings' is there a way of, for the names [[Radagast]] and [[Gimli]] getting rid of the '(Middle Earth)' part of the article name, so it just shows their name on the category page?

I think that makes sense.

[[User:Dan crook54|le Dan]] 20:29, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
:Unfortunately, no, since those pages are disambiguation pages and not all the articles linked are characters from LOTR. I don't think it matters, though - if people were searching for the LOTR character in that category, they would be able to figure it out (perhaps even more surely) with the disambiguation labels attached. —<font color="8100b4">[[User:Keakealani|K]]</font><font color="2f690d">[[User:Keakealani/Esperanza|e]]</font><font color="8100b4">[[User:Keakealani|akealani]]</font> 20:37, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

:There probably is a sneaky way to do this. It would involve using a character that doesn't display, and creating a redirect and categorising the redirect. Something like [[GimIi]]. Probably won't work. [[User:Carcharoth|Carcharoth]] 01:12, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

There we go! It worked. [[:Category:Characters in The Lord of the Rings]] now includes both [[GimIi]] (a redirect to the Middle-earth article) and [[Gimli (Middle-earth)]]. I'm sure there are several reasons why this shouldn't be done, but it gives you an idea of what can be done, if you know what I mean. I used the I (capital i) = l (lowercase l) thing in case it's not clear yet. Unfortunately, Radagast doesn't have an l in his name... [[User:Carcharoth|Carcharoth]] 01:19, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

*Because 'piped link' text in a category is used to define the sort order rather than how the page name is displayed there really isn't a way to vary the text which appears on the category page for an article placed in that category. Tricks with redirects like Carcharoth describes above can be used to put other pages in the category instead, but you can't change the way a page name is displayed. Using 'in story disambiguation' might make the most sense... i.e. [[Radagast the Brown]] or [[Gimli son of Gloin]]. Having those as redirects and putting the category link on them would result in better 'displayed names'. However, it would also cause double listing of these characters or create potential confusion when people see that there is no category entry on the main article itself. The best option might be to change the articles themselves to these more specific names... have the article be titled 'Radagast the Brown' rather than 'Radagast (Middle-earth)'. --[[User talk:CBDunkerson|CBD]] 11:52, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

== Any advice on how to handle this? ==

I have a particular concern with a certain group of users (I won't name names) who very flagrantly disobey the guidelines for Reverts on Wikipedia. There are about three to five of them and they seem to hover around the same genre of article. They regularly revert edits without any discussion on the talk page, and in these cases it becomes the original editor's burden to post on the talk page and argue why their edit -is- justified, instead of the reverter posting why it's -not- justified. They arrive at the discussions at usually the same time, and solicit each other for help on their talk pages. It also seems like they avoid the 3RR by getting each other to revert instead of one person doing it over and over. How do you deal with this sort of thing? Is avoiding the Revert policy (specifically, the part that says you shouldn't revert good faith edits and rather discuss them on a talk page) something that has any sort of administrative repercussions (like violating the 3RR), or what? == Browser Compatability Problem? ==

I've looked in the help files and FAQ, and I am not finding the information I need to resolve this problem. I use Mozilla Firefox version 1.5.0.8, and ever since it updated to 1.5.0.8, I can't display any of the formulas in Wikipedia articles. The Wikipeida website has provided critical resources during my electrical engineering education. If I can't resolve this problem, I will be forced to switch to Internet Explorer rather than lose the ability to access such a wealth of information.

I understand that formulas in Wikipedia articles are displayed with MathML. I have read that Firefox has "native" support for MathML, which I assume means that it should support MathML without any additional plugins. I tried downloading and installing MathML fonts, but this did not change anything. I'm afraid that I don't know what to do next. Please give me some information so that I can get Firefox to display the formulas. == Infobox position ==

I don't actually want to know how to do this (though I may find it useful in the future) but here is something that puzzles and annoys me. Most inforboxes appear on the right and do not obscure the article text. However, a number of infoboxes (e.g. city, historical cricketers) appear in articles at the top left before all text, meaning that readers have to scroll down a long way to find out the detail. Why do they do this? I presume it is because the infobox was itself designed to do this. An example page is [[Roanoke, Virginia]]. Should infobox designers be instructed to ensure their infoboxes are on the right, or is it the fault of the article editor when placing the infobox? I have used Edit to examine pages and infoboxes and am no wiser. [[User:Emeraude|Emeraude]] 17:50, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Analog Ear was recently posted. It does appear. It is text only.
However, the text is strung out far beyond normal margins. How can this be corrected?

:YouTube is disliked as a source, because there is little if any information about the video in question. There's no vetting process so it can't be considered reliable, and frequently the video is a copyright violation (which Wikipedia tries to avoid linking to). Unless there is an exceptional reason for including the link, it is likely to be reverted back. [[User:Trebor Rowntree|Trebor]] 21:00, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

:::The problem was that your article was apparently an exact copy of the one placed on your website. Posting an entire article/site verbatim is a problem. Further, Wikipedia has a policy of [[WP:NOR|no original research]]. You cannot cite something of your own as a fact in an article you are editing. The best thing I can recommend is to either write a new article, using the same sources as your webpage, or to request someone else write the article. I'm grateful for the feedback I'm getting - and for its speed. The article was original, very different to that on the website and it was researched from sources I had not used previously. I don't believe it was badly written. I'm rather perplexed as to what I should do now - apart from give up.
Whoops! The deleted article referred to above was submitted on 26 July and was a verbatim summary of other material on my website. So its deletion was understandable. The article I'm referring to here was submitted yesterday (22 December) and was an original piece. If I cannot locate it, do I assume it was not uploaded and should I repeat the process?

== Deleteing relevant RS cites without discussion ==

I have someone who is deleting my relevant RS cites because he objects to the way the cites are formatted. Isn't there some sort of guideline or recommendation that specifies that such things should be discussed on the Talk page first? If I were to go around deleting relevant RS cites without discussion I don't think it would be viewed very well. Thanks. [[User:Tanaats|Tanaats]] 21:42, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

== Images and access ==

I do not know where else to go. I am on old fashioned dialup, was Netscape now FireFox. Often [very often] I search an article, click, and it starts. Boxes where images are to be, of the prospective size of the images, with alternate text. The upload continues, at some point the boxes disappear or truncate to just the alternate text, no image. Over the last few days I have yet to see the top image in 'Archeopteryx' - a few days ago two of the three images in the article were there, but not the Munich specimen. Yesterday and today, the Munich one comes up but not the initial Berlin specimen. Is this my setup, or is Wiki sort of terminating image upload after some [relatively short] time?? --[[User:Dumarest|Dumarest]] 21:51, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Hello!

I'm having problems getting a graphic to stay anchored to the left, under #2. If I place the graphic on a separate line, #2 goes to the left of the graphic. If I place it at on it's own line the numbering under it goes back to #1. What do I do?

Here is what I'm working on:

*Have the customer:
#While in the mail view, click on Tools/Preferences/Calendar & To Do/Alarms.
#Uncheck Appointments/Meetings.

#Click on OK.
#Close Notes and then re-open Notes.
#Click on Tools/Preferences/Calendar & To Do/Alarms.
#Check Appointments/Meetings.
#Click on OK.
#*Note: If a message appears saying you have missed some alarms, do you want to see them, select "yes" (choosing "no" will turn your alarms off, even though they are enabled in your preferences!).

The title I created for the page is not correct. It reads: User:cookingupastory I would like it to read instead, Cooking Up A Story

Sounds simple, but after trying to discover the answer on your site, it became obvious to me it was not a simple change. My goal is to have the page discoverable for those who use the title (of our show) in Wikipedia. I do plan to add additional content once the basics get properly configured.

:Absolutely. If you want to save a page to your bookmarks, you are more than welcome to add that page to the bookmarks in your browser. This way, you will be able to bring up the most current version of the page. Additionally, if you want to save one particular edit of a page, just go to "Permanent link" in the toolbox on the left-hand side.
:I see also that you are a registered user. You also have the benefit of adding a page to your "watchlist." Just go to the page that you want to add, and click "Watch" at the top of the page. Then click on "my watchlist" at the very top to view all of the pages you are watching.

== Question marks where text cannot be displayed: affects editing? ==

Occasionally I will see question marks in a Wikipedia article, signifying text my computer is unable to interpret. This is common with Japanese/Chinese characters and things of that nature. My question is (and by its very nature, this is not something I can test myself), if I edit one of these articles, will the special characters remain, or will they be reduced to actual question marks and affect the users who can see these characters? I'm guessing the actual characters are preserved when I see the ????? in the article and in the article's Edit box, but I'd rather be safe and make sure I'm not resubmitting the article with question mark characters. Thanks.. [[User:Mussavcom|mussavcom]] 01:02, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
*Yup, they'll be safe. The "?" is not an actual "?" character--it is what your computer displays when it encounters a unicode character or the like that it doesn't have the font for. Best option? Just install the fonts, its pretty easy. [[Shift JIS]] encoding is pretty common across the Internet.&mdash; [[User:Dark Shikari|<span style="background-color:#DDDDFF; font-weight:bold"><FONT COLOR="#0000FF">Da</FONT><FONT COLOR="#0000CC">rk</FONT> <FONT COLOR="#000099">Sh</FONT><FONT COLOR="#000066">ik</FONT><FONT COLOR="#000033">ar</FONT><FONT COLOR="#000000">i</FONT>]] <font color="#000088">[[User_talk:Dark_Shikari|''talk'']]'''/'''[[Special:Contributions/Dark_Shikari|''contribs'']]</font></span> 02:42, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

== Possibly Controversial Essay ==

I'm considering writing an essay, but I'm afraid the topic might be considered uncivil. Basically, it's about when new users get all uppity and think they know better than the users who have been here far longer. I understand that new and inexperienced users can be useful, I personally know a fantastic one who is very diligent in patrolling an article we have a mutual interest in, but sadly I know more that don't care to read policies and just do what they want. IAR only applies in certain cases, you know. Then again, maybe somebody has already written this, and if they have throw me the link. If the topic's bad, though, tell me and I won't write it, I'll just keep my dark thoughts on the inside...:)

The deleting admin gave the reason G4 from [[WP:CSD]] which is "recreation of deleted material". It had previously been deleted in July because it had not asserted any notability. == Information about films in production ==

As an editor who works on a good number of Wikipedia articles about upcoming films, I'm curious about the best way to handle leaked production information. I've often cited the policy that information reported by scoopers is not [[WP:V|verifiable]], as they are not [[WP:RS|reliable sources]]. However, if scooper information is complemented with pictures, does the information become authentic? For example, the Joker will make an appearance in ''[[The Dark Knight (film)|The Dark Knight]]''. I wouldn't be surprised to see leaked information and photos about how the Joker looks. My question is, does information such as this have any kind of place here at Wikipedia, or should it be dismissed entirely? —[[User:Erikster|Erik]] ([[User talk:Erikster|talk]] • [[Special:Contributions/Erikster|contrib]]) - 19:05, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

== Referencing a Talk Page to Group Multiple Sources into One ==

There is currently a debate as to whether the talk page for an article can be used as a source on the [[List_of_best-selling_video_game_consoles|List of best-selling video game consoles]]. To acquire the total sales for some systems, a collection of about 10+ different sources was compiled, explained, and added together on the [[Talk:List_of_best-selling_video_game_consoles|Talk Page]]. The resulting figure was then used on the main article page with the source as the Talk Page section where all the sources are listed. This was done instead of listing all the sources and explanations on the main article page, where it would make the article excessively messy.
