'''''Hitman: Blood Money''''' is a 2006 [[Stealth game|stealth video game]] developed by [[IO Interactive]] and published by [[Eidos Interactive]]. It was released in May 2006 for [[Microsoft Windows]], [[PlayStation 2]], [[Xbox (console)|Xbox]] and [[Xbox 360]]. It is the fourth installment in the [[Hitman (franchise)|''Hitman'' video game series]], and the sequel to 2004's ''[[Hitman: Contracts]]''. The story follows [[Human cloning|cloned]] assassin [[Agent 47]]'s efforts to bring down the Franchise, a rival [[contract killing]] organization that is threatening his employers, the International Contract Agency (ICA), and seeking to obtain the same cloning technology that created 47. Meanwhile, a [[frame story]] presents 47's life and various contracts he carried out, as narrated by a former [[Federal Bureau of Investigation|FBI]] director to a journalist.

''Blood Money'' received critical acclaim for its graphics, narrative, gameplay, voice acting and darker tone, it was a commercial success, selling more than 2.1 million copies. It has gained a [[cult following]] and is considered by many publications and critics as one of the [[List of video games considered the best|greatest video games ever made]].<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.gamesradar.com/best-games-ever/ |title=The 100 Best Games of All-Time |date=February 25, 2015 |website=[[GamesRadar+]] |publisher=[[Future US]] |access-date=November 19, 2013 |archive-date=20 January 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170120154914/http://www.gamesradar.com/best-games-ever/ |url-status=live }}</ref><ref>{{cite web|last=Polygon Staff|title=The 500 Best Video Games of All Time|url=https://www.polygon.com/features/2017/11/27/16158276/polygon-500-best-games-of-all-time-500-401|website=[[Polygon (website)|Polygon]]|publisher=[[Vox Media]]|access-date=December 1, 2017|date=November 27, 2017|archive-date=3 March 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180303210843/https://www.polygon.com/features/2017/11/27/16158276/polygon-500-best-games-of-all-time-500-401|url-status=live}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|title=The 100 Greatest Video Games of All Time|url=https://www.slantmagazine.com/features/article/100-greatest-video-games-of-all-time/p10%20100%20greatest%20video%20games%20of%20all%20time|website=slantmagazine.com|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150712044110/http://www.slantmagazine.com/features/article/100-greatest-video-games-of-all-time/P10|archive-date=July 12, 2015|date=June 9, 2014}}</ref> High-definition ports of ''Blood Money'' and two of its predecessors, ''[[Hitman 2: Silent Assassin]]'' and ''Contracts'', were released on [[PlayStation 3]] and [[Xbox 360]] in January 2013 as the ''Hitman HD Trilogy''.<ref>{{cite web|last=Sarkar|first=Samit|date=28 January 2013|title=Hitman: HD Trilogy trailer revisits the series' hits|url=https://www.polygon.com/2013/1/28/3924790/hitman-hd-trilogy-trailer|website=[[Polygon (website)|Polygon]]|access-date=20 January 2019|archive-date=21 April 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210421184405/https://www.polygon.com/2013/1/28/3924790/hitman-hd-trilogy-trailer|url-status=live}}</ref> A sequel, ''[[Hitman: Absolution]]'', was released in 2012, and [[4K resolution|4K]] remastered [[Porting#Porting of video games|ports]] of both ''Blood Money'' and ''Absolution'' were released by [[Warner Bros. As with previous installments, ''Hitman: Blood Money'' has the player control series [[protagonist]] [[Agent 47]], who is assigned various targets to assassinate in order to complete missions. Armed guards, security checkpoints, witnesses and other obstacles attempt to prohibit Agent 47's success. The player guides Agent 47 through the game's levels from a third-person perspective. A map showing each topographical area and the ___location of targets and characters assists the player. To complete his mission, Agent 47 uses multiple methods to eliminate targets, regardless of witnesses or violence to bystanders. ''Blood Money'' penalizes players for making too much noise or being too violent.<ref name="IGNPre">{{cite web|url=https://www.ign.com/articles/2005/10/25/hitman-bloodmoney|title=Hitman BloodMoney|work=[[IGN]]|publisher=[[Ziff Davis]]|first=Douglass|last=C. ''Hitman: Blood Money'' centers on assassinations carried out by [[Codename 47|Agent 47]] (or, as he is referred to by the narrator, Mr. 47), as narrated in cutscenes by the former director of the [[FBI]] to a journalist invited to his home as they discuss 47. The wheelchair-bound ex-director recounts how his organization tracked 47 over a two-year period by observing his operations, each of which is played when it is mentioned in his story. It should be noted that during the interview, the ex-director mentions certain details that strongly contrast with what actually happened. The tone of the game, in complete contrast with the previous game, is operatic and often veers into the larger-than-life, recalling elements of the 'world-traveler' grandeur of [[Hitman 2: Silent Assassin]]. Many of the new levels also contain strong sexual themes greatly exceeding that of previous titles in the series.

New features introduced in ''Blood Money'' included the ability to climb over obstacles, improved unarmed combat, the use of [[non-player character]]s (NPC) as [[human shield]]s, the ability to dispose of or conceal bodies, improved character animations, a new game engine, and the ability to upgrade weapons and equipment.<ref name="ShackNews">{{cite web|url=http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=75&page=1 |title=ShackNews.com |publisher=ShackNews.com |access-date=2014-03-20}}</ref> Five of the featured weapons in the game, and some pieces of equipment, can be upgraded.<ref name="ShackNews"/>
== Features ==
Many new features were introduced to Hitman: Blood Money. These include the capability to climb through more obstacles, improved character animations (example-face, eyes, etc), a new game engine and the ability to upgrade weapons and equipment. However, only five of the featured weapons in the game, as well as assorted pieces of equipment such as bombs and armor, can be upgraded. Every level contains some sort of method to make the target's death look like an accident; for example, tampering with someone's grill to make it explode when they turn it on, or the target 'accidentally' falling off a balcony. There are also [[improvised weapons]], like a nailgun or a pair of hedge clippers.

Agent 47 can improvise weapons to complete missions, such as [[nail gun]]s, [[Air gun|toy air rifle]]s, knives, screwdrivers, stilettos, [[swordstick]]s, fire extinguishers, hammers, and hedge clippers.<ref name="IGNPre"/>
A gameplay feature new to the Hitman series was also added, the "Notoriety" system. If the player, during a mission, kills innocents or civilians, gets caught on [[Closed-Circuit Television|CCTV]] or is witnessed committing murder, Agent 47's notoriety will rise. Conversely, if the player executes the mission perfectly with none of the aforementioned events occurring, 47's notoriety will be minimal. The higher Agent 47's notoriety is, the easier it will be for [[non player character|NPCs]] to identify him. Players may use the [[bribery]] system to negate accumulated notoriety. The notoriety system is not enabled in "Rookie" mode, which also allows unlimited saves and a lower level of general difficulty.

''Blood Money'' introduced a notoriety system that rises and falls based upon Agent 47's success. The higher Agent 47's notoriety, the easier it is for NPCs to identify him. If Agent 47 is captured on camera surveillance or witnessed committing murder, the character's notoriety will rise.<ref name="Shack Int.">{{cite web|url=http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=75&page=2 |title=ShackNews.com |publisher=ShackNews.com |access-date=2014-03-20 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090829122719/http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=75&page=2 |archive-date=2009-08-29 }}</ref> If the player executes a mission perfectly, Agent 47's notoriety will be minimal. ''Blood Money'' provides players with methods to reduce Agent 47's notoriety, including destroying surveillance equipment and bribery.<ref name="Shack Int." /> Notoriety gained in early missions will affect later missions. The player receives payment upon completion of a mission, which can be used to upgrade weapons, or bribe authorities to lower their notoriety score.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.ign.com/articles/2006/03/11/hitman-blood-money-hands-on|title=Hitman: Blood Money: Hands-On|work=[[IGN]]|publisher=[[Ziff Davis]]|first=Douglass|last=C. Health boosts are available in the game, such as Painkillers. Though the in-game store description claims they heal a "small amount of damage," they actually replenish about 2/3 of Agent 47's life bar. The other, Adrenaline, gives you a smaller health boost, and only lasts for a certain amount of time.

Upon completion of each mission, a newspaper article is displayed containing the mission's results, Agent 47's notoriety level, the weapon most frequently used and how accurately it was used, the number of police, security, and civilians killed or injured, and the existence of witnesses. Sketches of Agent 47's face are displayed and become more accurate as the character's notoriety grows: if the notoriety system is disabled, or if the player remains unseen throughout the mission, the article shows a picture of the mission's target in place of the sketch. Players are awarded ratings based upon the success of the mission, such as a designation of "silent assassin" when the target was assassinated as cleanly and quietly as possible.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2011-03-15 |title=Hitman: Blood Money, is it worth your money? |url=http://www.bunker37.com/2011/03/hitman-blood-money-is-it-worth-your-money/ |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110708104330/http://www.bunker37.com/2011/03/hitman-blood-money-is-it-worth-your-money/ |archive-date=2011-07-08 |access-date=2011-03-15 |website=Bunker 37}}</ref>
When each mission has been completed, a [[Article (publishing)|newspaper article]] is displayed regarding the hit, in which the content varies depending on the investigation results and the player's notoriety. Sketch drawings are also sometimes visible of Agent 47's face, which grow progressively more accurate as 47's notoriety grows. The article's title relates to the player's mission rating, whether it is (not in any specific order) "The Eraser", "Gangster", "Terrorist", "Loose Cannon", "Murderer", "Mad Butcher", "Mass Murderer", "Berserker", "Hoodlum", "Hired Killer", "Contract Killer", "Specialist", "Professional", "Beef Eater", "Skull Splitter", "Silent Assassin", "The Cleaner", "Hitman", "The Ghost", "Thug", "Deranged Slayer", "Sushi Chef", "Insane Florist", "Needle Pumper", "Slugger", "Stalker", "Psychopath", "The Phantom Killer" or "The Russian Hare". "Silent Assassin", in which you assassinate the targets as cleanly and quietly as possible, and draw no unnecessary attention to yourself (blow covers, leave no extra bodies, etc.), is the best rating possible on all missions. It ought to be added that certain ratings are only available on certain levels, by performing a certain prerequisite. (EG. In "A New Life", the fourth mission, a rank of "The Russian Hare" can be achieved by killing all of the FBI agents with a sniper rifle.}

''Blood Money'' improved the melee combat system from previous releases, allowing players to disarm as well as lethally throw weapons at NPCs. Unlike previous games, melee weapons cannot be collected in the player's armory. ''Blood Money'' also introduces rival assassins.<ref name="PC Int.">{{cite web|url=http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=145880|title=ComputerAndVideoGames.com|date=2006-09-12|publisher=ComputerAndVideoGames.com|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090919132927/http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=145880|archive-date=2009-09-19|access-date=2014-03-20|url-status=live}}</ref>

*'''Death of a Showman''' (Training level) - In an abandoned [[amusement park]], [[Baltimore, Maryland]]
:A father wants payback for his son's death in an amusement park accident. Agent 47 is sent to kill the manager Joseph Clarance, also known as "Swing King," and to make sure that the last thing he sees before his death is a photo of the dead son. The player learns the basics of the game here.

==Plot==
*'''A Vintage Year''' (Vineyard and Drug Lab) [[Colchagua Valley]], [[Chile]]
American journalist Rick Henderson visits the estate of former [[Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation|FBI Director]] Alexander Leland "Jack" Cayne, in hopes of interviewing him over an attack at the [[White House]] or his career. However, Cayne reveals that the interview was merely a ruse, and that Rick was invited to be given the details concerning a far greater story – the full details on cloned hitman [[Agent 47]], a contract killer for the International Contract Agency (ICA), a global organisation involved in assassinations. Although skeptical over the existence of 47, who is deemed an [[urban legend|urban myth]], Rick decides to listen to Cayne's story, reading documents he provides about a number of contracts committed by 47.
:Agent 47 is ordered to assassinate a Chilean ex-Colonel turned druglord posing as a [[vintner]]. To make it look like a drug hit, 47 must take out his [[cocaine]]-addicted son who is set to take over the family business.

The documents reveal that after 47 had committed an assassination against a bankrupt amusement park owner in [[Baltimore]], [[Maryland]], he went abroad to conduct jobs in [[Chile]] and [[France]], assigned to him by his handler Diana Burnwood, before taking on several across the United States. During this time, the ICA found itself being targeted by a rival outfit called "the Franchise", who soon began killing ICA agents while hunting down 47. Although 47 avoids being killed by rival assassins, Diana is forced to shut down the ICA, and divides up its remaining resources between him and herself. Cayne eventually goes on to talk about the White House attack, claiming 47 was involved in the chaos that occurred, but was ultimately brought down by his handler as the law closed in on him.
*'''Curtains Down''' (Opera) - [[Paris, France]]
:Agent 47 is sent to an Opera house in which the opera '[[Tosca]]' is being rehearsed. The mission is to assassinate two targets that are associated with child prostitution rings. This is the mission that leads up to the final mission in the previous game, ''[[Hitman: Contracts]]''. Curiously, 47 receives the briefing for this mission on [[St. Patrick's Day]]. Targets also differ between titles. While American ambassador, Richard Delahunt, appears as a mark in both Contracts and Blood Money, the second target in Contracts is a Portuguese tenor named Philippe Berceuse, whilst Blood Money's target is actually Italian tenor, Alvaro D'Alvade. Also, the appearance of both in the briefing of [[Hitman: Contracts]] is radically different compared to their appearance in Blood Money; both are wearing plain navy suits, slightly unrealistic hair and shown with minimal facial detail. It is also worth stating that, in the end cutscene after the mission, in which 47 is shot, the weapon he is shot with appears to be a '''Colt M1911''', the trademark weapon of assassins working for the Franchise. This vaguely alludes to the fact that the Chief of Police could possibly be involved with, or linked to, the Franchise. 47 even states that "he looked [47] in the eyes and knew who [he] was," in the beginning scene of Contracts, referring either to the Police Chief or the gunmen who shot him. It could also be possible, but maybe not very probable, that the gunmen is the first "Mark" albino clone, not seen in either Contracts or, more notably, Blood Money, since we see only "Mark II" and "Mark III".

Unknown to Cayne, 47 had been made aware that the Franchise was working for a political organization that sought to monopolize on Ort-Meyer's cloning technology. As the current US president was planning to legalize cloning, the Franchise was hired to assassinate him so that their puppet, the [[Vice President of the United States|U.S. Vice President]], would replace him; 47 found himself hired by Carlton Smith, a [[Central Intelligence Agency|CIA]] agent whom he rescued on multiple occasions, to prevent this. With the Franchise exposed, Diana decided to bring down the outfit with a risky plan by pretending to double-cross 47 and injecting him with [[poison]] – in reality a serum to induce a [[Hibernation|hibernatory]] state that mimics death, so that he could be brought close to those involved in the Franchise.
*'''Flatline''' (Rehabilitation center) - [[Redwood City, California]]
:Agent 47 must, yet again, rescue blundering [[CIA]] [[Smith (Hitman character)|Agent Smith]] (who has appeared in every Hitman game to date), as well as assassinate a mob boss-turned-state's witness, and (optionally) assassinate two other targets for an extra $50,000 per head.

As 47's [[bone marrow]] could be used by the organization's rivals, Cayne, the head of the Franchise, was ordered to find him and kill him. To ensure his marrow cannot be recovered, Cayne had him prepared for [[cremation]], and brings Rick to watch the ceremony. However, Diana takes an opportunity in the ceremony to give 47 the [[antidote]] to the serum, allowing him to wake and kill everyone present. With his anonymity preserved, Diana steals the Franchise's assets to reopen the ICA, while 47 proceeds to take on his next contract.
*'''A New Life''' (Suburb) - [[Del Mar, CA]]
:Agent 47 has to kill a criminal who is living under the [[witness protection program]], and steal a [[microfilm]], all under the watchful eyes of the [[FBI]] before criminal's son's birthday party.

The '''''Hitman: Blood Money Original Soundtrack''''', composed by [[Jesper Kyd]], was released on 30 May 2006 by [[Sumthing Else]] and [[Eidos Interactive|Eidos]]. The score was performed with the [[Budapest Symphony Orchestra]] and the Hungarian Radio Choir. It features Kyd's trademark [[Ambient music|ambience]] and dark, foreboding arrangements with the [[Choir|choral]] parts in deep brooding [[Latin music|Latin]].<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.ign.com/articles/2006/06/01/jesper-kyd-hitman-blood-money-original-soundtrack |title=Jesper Kyd - Hitman: Blood Money Original Soundtrack

Matt Scheller of [[Soundtrack.Net]] gave the soundtrack 3/5 stars;<ref name="rev1score">{{Cite web |last=Scheller |first=Matt |date=2006-09-23 |title=Review: Hitman: Blood Money |url=https://www.soundtrack.net/album/hitman-blood-money/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200723180605/https://www.soundtrack.net/album/hitman-blood-money/ |archive-date=2020-07-23 |access-date=2010-07-28 |website=[[Soundtrack.Net]]}}</ref> despite the fact that "the more orchestral approach hits home to me more so than the [[Electronic music|electronic]] stuff", he enjoys the work of Jesper Kyd never-the-less, and ''Blood Money'' "is a real treat for me in that this is the return of a primarily orchestral score". Even though "it's not as thematic as the first of the ''Hitman'' games, there is enough material here that will satisfy most soundtrack collectors". Despite the orchestral focus, "there are plenty of rhythms and beats that accompany the orchestral palette", such as "Club Heaven" that "features some pretty standard <nowiki>'nightclub'</nowiki> [[techno]]". However, Scheller states that a lot of tracks are, "at times, wall-to-wall music" that accompany Agent 47 during various stages; but sums up that "I find that the more I listen to the album, the more enjoyable it becomes".

* [[List of video games considered the best]]
{{spoiler}}
The game begins with a flashback at a [[Baltimore]] amusement park, where dozens die in an accident caused by negligence. The father of one of the victims calls the Agency and orders a hit on the park owner, who was cleared of all charges. 47, on the run from competitors from Europe, performs the hit; following that assignment, he receives a string of contracts by American clients eager to hire the legendary hitman. With the exception of two missions occurring respectively in Chile and Paris (which take place in the game immediately after this one), all subsequent missions occur in chronological order following this one.

==Notes==
The bulk of the game takes place as flashback sequences that occur concordant to the present day, in which a reporter and the former [[Federal Bureau of Investigation|FBI]] Director, Alexander Leland Cayne, discuss 47's hits over the past two years (2004-2005) and his involvement in the whole thing. The reporter arranged to interview Cayne concerning a recent attack on the White House (an important plot point). It quickly becomes clear that Alexander's real intent is to discuss 47. As the story progresses, the Agency's employees are said to be being systematically eliminated by an [[Albinism|albino]] [[Human cloning|clone]], a super-assassin dispatched by a western counterpart to the Agency called "The Franchise"; the situation degrades to the point where Diana informs 47 that they are the only ones left.
{{Notelist}}

==References==
Diana closes down the Agency with a final contract to kill the assassins coming after the two. After the assignment, 47 is approached by an old acquaintance, a [[CIA]] agent named Smith, who 47 rescued in the '''Flatline''' mission. He approaches 47 with a high-profile mission, paid for using several million dollars worth of [[diamond]]s. There is a reason why the payout is so particularly generous; the targets are The Franchise's clone assassin and the [[Vice President of the United States]], Daniel Morris. Both represent a shadow-ops organization dedicated to monopolizing the cloning technology that spawned 47. They intend to assassinate the President before he can push forward his pro-cloning stance, as The Franchise and its controlling parent stand to lose their military edge.

As expected, 47 is successful. Hunted by both enemy operatives and the police, he flees to his hideout. Without warning, he is visited by Diana, immediately arousing his suspicion (face-to-face meetings with Diana are highly irregular). Diana claims to know how to shake off the Franchise. As 47 mulls over the folder she hands him, expressing his misgivings as to the likelihood of its success, Diana injects him with a syringe and kills him (her apparent betrayal causes 47 to shout "Bitch!", inciting his only line of verbal aggression in the series). 47's body is added by [[SWAT]] members, and Diana, stating that killing 47 was "surprisingly pleasant," is formally inducted into the Franchise by its founder, Jack Alexander. The story at this point shifts to the present day; 47 is scheduled for [[cremation]] so his bone marrow cannot be harnessed by cloning rivals, destroying forever anyone else's chance of producing a non-defective clone. Diana drapes 47's custom Silverballers over his chest during his hasty funeral and kisses him after applying lipstick. It becomes apparent that the "poison" she injected was actually a fake-death serum 47 used in an earlier assignment that induces a death-like [[Hibernation|hibernative]] state. Diana's lipstick contains the [[antidote]] in it (The same used to retrieve Agent Smith from a rehab clinic in the mission 'Flatline").

From here, the story may conclude two different ways:

'''Ending 1:'''

... is tragic, in which it is presumed the antidote fails to work, and 47 is therefore sunk into the floor to finally be cremated. To obtain this first ending, the player simply does not have do anything as the credits are rolling by.

'''Ending 2:'''

...is the true, canonical ending, in which the antidote works and 47 rises up, slaughtering everyone in the church (except Diana, who has already left — apparently locking the gates behind her to prevent witnesses from escaping). To ensure that absolutely no one knows he is still alive, even the innocent reporter and priest are not spared from his bullets. After the ordeal, 47 leaves the funeral. To obtain this second ending, the player must press the movement keys repeatedly till 47's pulsing health bar reaches maximum while the credits are rolling by.

Sometime after the funeral massacre, Diana is shown to have, possibly, reopened the Agency, which overlooks the Copenhagen harbor. It is unknown whether she has ascended to a higher rank as a result of this. She receives a call from someone referred to as "Your Majesty". The voice cannot be heard, but Diana replies that they can't find a trace of 47. Meanwhile, a briefcase-bearing 47 is at a seedy-looking [[brothel]] with a traditionally-dressed Chinese man. He is led offscreen by the man after expressing interest about what he has heard is "in the back".

== Targets ==
'''Joseph "The Swing King" Clarence''' - Once a local celebrity and wealthy owner of a popular amusement park. After his Ferris Wheel ride collapsed, killing and maiming dozens, the Swing King exhausted his fortune hiring powerful lawyers. He was acquitted, but is now ruined and living in the remnant of his park. His wife is divorcing him, and he is at the mercy of a drug lord named ''Mr. Spooks'' (who resembles [[Snoop Dog]]) and his gang of drug pushers and gangbangers to whom he rented out his park, who now run it as their own. One grieving parent, seething from Clarence's acquittal, has placed an order for Swing King to be killed. He has asked to ensure that the photograph of his young son is the last thing Clarence ever sees.

'''The Delgados''' - '''Fernando Xalvador Delgado''', a retired [[Colonel]] of [[Pinochet]]'s intelligence service, enjoys old age by running a [[Chile]]-based [[vineyard]], fronting a [[cocaine]] laboratory, and playing the [[cello]]. His son, '''Manuel''', spends much of his time testing his products in the cellar, both wine and cocaine. The reviews of Fernando's wine are, to say the least, mixed (Going even as far as stating the wines are the finest to the worst in Chille in the same article), but a pensioners club from [[Santiago, Chile|Santiago]] is expected, making 47's penetration of the villa that much easier.

'''Alvaro D'Alvade and Richard Delahunt''' - D'Alvade is an Italian opera singer, currently performing at the [[Paris Opera House]]. D'Alvade, although a celebrated singer, has a blemished reputation, including sexual acts with minors, that has caused some singers to refuse to perform with him. Richard Delahunt is the United States Ambassador to the Vatican and personal friend to D'Alvade. He obsessively watches his friend at the open rehearsals. Delahunt is involved with D'Alvade in a prostitution ring trafficking youth into Europe, and possibly even assisted him in covering up the rape and murder of a young girl. These two characters featured in the overlapping final mission of [[Hitman: Contracts]] (Hunter and Hunted), when in the mission objectives it is shown that both of them have already been killed and the final target is a Parisian Police Inspector, who was tipped off to 47's intentions. This overlap concludes in the ultimate killing of the Inspector. However, Alvaro D'Alvade, who is Italian in Blood Money, in a contradiction between the two games, is referred to in [[Hitman: Contracts]] as Philippe Berceuse, who is, supposedly, Portuguese; this could either entail a continuity error or simply a pseudonym of his.

'''Lorenzo Lombardo, Rudy Menzana, and Carmine Desalvo''' - Three mobsters in rehab at a rehabilitation center in North California. One of them (It switches randomly between each person) is the main target. The target plans to become a federal witness once released from the institute. The other two become optional targets for $50,000 each due to turmoil inside of the New York Mafia families, as revealed by Diana later in the mission. Each are easily seen by their robes, which are different from the usual white robes of the facility. Lombardo wears a blue robe, Menzana wears a pink robe, and Desalvo wears green.

'''Vinnie "Slugger" Sinistra''' - A Cuban drug trafficking gangster turned federal witness of United States Federal Witness Protection Program (WITSEC). He is protected round-the-clock by FBI agents, but remains very jittery and never goes anywhere without his powerful revolver. The client would rather keep some information Vinnie possesses, in the form of a microfilm, undisclosed, and for this purpose he must be taken out. The microfilm is concealed within his wife's necklace. Mrs. Sinistra appears bored with her anxious husband and sexless marriage and shows a considerable interest in the young pool boy, and a visiting clown. Preparations for his youngest child's birthday party should provide useful cover for 47. However, Vinnie's suburban home is crawling with FBI to ensure he makes it to court next week.

'''The Crows''' - A group of assassins who have been assigned to take out a candidate for the upcoming presidential election. The leader, an albino clone named '''Mark Purayah II''' (completely unrelated to Mark Parchezzi III), is awaiting his payment in the form of a briefcase of diamonds. His subordinates, '''Angelina Mason''' and '''Raymond Kulinsky''', are romantically attached and mentally unstable. They keep in close contact with one another via walkie-talkie. The three crows can be easily distinguished from their yellow costumed guards, due to theirs being black. However, the crowded streets of New Orleans during the [[Mardi Gras]] festival make them very difficult to single out for a killing.

'''Lorne de Havilland''' - The 71-year-old porn tycoon and born-again [[Christian]]. He founded the magazine "Popqurn," among other pornographic endeavours. He owns a handful of adult nightclubs, where he tape records sexual encounters in the backrooms between paid professionals and influential people. Blackmailing politicians and VIPs with these videotapes provides a sizable portion of de Havilland's income. On Christmas Eve, he will be hosting a party at "The Grotto", his [[Rocky Mountains]] estate. Reclusive by nature, he keeps to his private rooms to and the studio floor of his mansion, viewing his library of few secret recordings and checking up on "actresses" on-set. His character is apparently an amalgamation of [[Hugh Hefner]] and [[Larry Flynt]].

'''Chad Bingham Jr.''' - The youngest son of Senator Bingham and the unpleasant smudge on his father's pristine political reputation. He has developed a brutal reputation for assaulting women, among them a number of strippers. He managed to kill a girl in the back of one of de Havilland's clubs, with a video camera running. Chad is present at de Havilland's Christmas bash, unaware that someone with a vested interest in his father's career has ordered his and Havilland's death. The retrieval of the illicit videotape is top priority.

'''Unknown Assassin''' (Credited as '?') - Found on the '''...You'd Better Watch Out''' mission, a woman dressed as one of the pleasure girls prompts 47 into a small room offside. If the player follows her, she will promptly execute you by stabbing you in the neck with an nail file (which was originally an ingame weapon, but was later removed), if not prevented from doing so, and cites that "men are so predictable." The unconscious girl whose identity she stole can be found behind the sofa. She is the agent Jack Alexander refers to as 'our best agent'. Killing her is not a core objective in the mission.

'''Skip Muldoon''' - Skip is the Captain of The Emily, a Mississippi riverboat, which has been cruising up and down the [[Mississippi River]] for 20 years. He is also the head of a drugrunning gang known as the Gators. Skip Muldoon enjoys showing off his shooting skills and has a weakness for fried food and cream-filled pastries. His appetite for fatty desserts is only matched by his appetite for his young and fit crew. The safe in his office aboard the boat contains homemade pornography depicting a (presumably) forceful encounter with his niece, Margeaux LeBlanc.

'''The Gators''' - A gang of drug runners working with Skip Muldoon on his showboat, there are six members of the gang who are attending Muldoon's birthday. Identifiable by their red caps and Bull .480 pistols.

'''Hank Leitch''' - Hank, the dim-witted leader of the Blueclaw gang and the son of the late ''Skip Muldoon'', is about to be married to his cousin '''Margeaux LeBlanc'''. The couple has already eloped in secret, but the formal ceremony for Hank and his new bride is about to take place with their family and friends on an island that holds the LeBlanc estate. The client wishes both the deaths of ''Hank Leitch'' and his uncle, '''John "Pappy" LeBlanc''', a prominent crimelord. The client stresses that Margeaux must not be harmed. The newspaper following the mission claims she inherited hundreds of millions of dollars from her late father and husband's inheiritance. Soon after, she is reported enjoying her inheritance as "the Bayou Beauty" in [[Las Vegas]]. It is assumed that Margeaux herself is the client.

'''The Sheik''' - His full title is '''[[Sheik]] Muhammad Bin Faisal Al-Khalifa'''. He is the CEO of Arabian Pharmaceutical Exports (APEX), which has been rumored to be involved in illegal research, possibly [[cloning]] and biological weaponry. A deal has been struck with a South African white supremacist named '''Hendrik Schmutz''' who possesses certain [[DNA]] samples the Sheik is eager to get his hands on. The two will be meeting at the [[Arabian Knights]]-themed [[casino]], The Shamal Hotel, in [[Las Vegas]]. In addition to his troop of armed bodyguards, the Sheik has invited his personal scientist, '''Tariq Abdul Lateef''', to make the exchange of a briefcase of [[blood diamonds]] and to check the authenticity of the DNA samples. 47 must kill Al-Khalifa, Schmutz, and Lateef and (optionally) escape with the payment case.

'''Agent Martinez''' - An undercover CIA agent who has gone rogue and joined the arms smugglers he was supposed to be spying on. He spends the entire mission, which occurs at a pair of costume parties, wearing a yellow demon mask. He is there to meet with Vaana Ketlyn, another target. (Note: Martinez's mask is of that of the demon face which appears above one of the stages in the "Death of a Showman" mission.)

'''Vaana Ketlyn''' - The arms dealer whom Agent Martinez has aligned himself. Somewhat [[Gothic subculture|Gothic]] in appearance, she is the host of the Heaven and Hell parties where Martinez is organizing an arms deal, and acts as the master of ceremonies at the Hell party, presiding over the room from a steel railed stage suspended over a pit of sharks and giant flamethrowers. She can be eliminated by 47 either in her office when he's disguised as Agent Martinez or her pyrotechnic tubes can be turned around on her platform to engulf her in flames when she shows off for the crowd and then in an attempt to put the flames out, she rolls around on the ground and falls into the tank of great white sharks where she is subsequently consumed by them.

'''Eve''' - A young and attractive female assassin for The Franchise who has been killing 47's fellow hitmen. Along with fellow Franchise agent Maynard John, she has been assigned to kill 47 himself at the Heaven and Hell parties near the end of the game. Posing as a singer, but doing so very poorly, she appears to have a sexual, rather than purely financial, motive for killing. If 47 follows her into an office, a cut-scene will show her mounting him before repeatedly stabbing him with a [[stiletto]]. 47 eliminates her in order to find out who's been killing Agency personnel.

'''Maynard John''' - A hitman with a flair for the dramatic who is working for the Franchise who has been killing 47's fellow hitmen and is tasked, along with Eve, with killing 47 at the Heaven and Hell parties; he is the undercover operative in the Hell party. He spends the entire level dressed as a devil and pretending to be the bartender, though his drink concoctions cause those who consume them to become violently ill. Rather than attempt to simply kill 47, as he has been assigned to do, he engages in a duel in a soundproofed room, to try to prove that he is the superior assassin. Of course, he fails.

'''Daniel Morris'''- Interim Vice President of the U.S.A. after his predecessor was killed in a suspicious car accident. Before his post, he was noted for being a moderate in all issues, save for a near-obsessive opposition to cloning and a disdain of checks on executive power. He chafes at being regulated to a secretary for the First Lady and being forced to walk the presidential dog, among other things, under her orders. However, he stands to gain real control over the country, as he tasks an assassin sent to kill pro-cloning President Stewart as he arrives back from Los Angeles. (Note: Daniel Morris is also the name of former editor in chief, and current associate publisher of PC Gamer magazine, Dan Morris; he acknowledged this, and claims that their faces are also quite similar. He has speculated that the similarities may be a result of a poker game between himself and the lead designer of Eidos.)

'''Mark Parchezzi III'''- An albino clone (the best in a line that also included Mark Puryah II above) and 47's counterpart in the Franchise. In the newspapers' side articles, he is sometimes alluded to as a devious assassin and a "master of disguises" killing various targets; he is largely responsible for murdering most of the ICA's employees. Contacting Vice President Morris as "his niece", Parchezzi gains access to the Oval Office by disguising himself as a janitor, but is flushed out and killed by his rival, 47, on the roof. 47 is under the false assumption that the Franchise is run solely by Parchezzi. Some have claimed that Parchezzi bears a superficial resemblance to [[Richard Burton]].

'''Alexander Leland Cayne'''- As mentioned in Ending 2 above, 47 eventually kills Alexander Cayne after rising during the funeral.

''' Rick Henderson'''- A reporter who interviewed Alexander Leland Cayne. Along with Cayne, his guards, and the priest, 47 is forced to kill him to prevent him from revealing 47's fate.

== Trivia ==

*[[Jesper Kyd]] composed Blood Money's soundtrack, continuing his work with the franchise.

*The main theme, used in the menu sequences, is "[[Ellens dritter Gesang]]" by [[Franz Schubert]], more commonly referred to as "[[Ave Maria]]". It was also used in the blockbuster movie "[[Assassins]]", also centered around the theme of hired killers.

*[[David Bateson]] provided his voice and visage for Agent 47.

*The small cutscene which occurs when the player strangles someone from above in an elevator shaft, is a homage to the opening assassination in [[Luc Besson]]'s Léon.

*In the mission "Murder of Crows" if you go into one of the nightclubs and stand still for quite some time 47 will start to dance. Same works in the mission "Till Death Do Us Part" on the dance floor in front of the house.

*The newspaper displayed at the end of each mission makes references to past and future IO Interactive games, [[Freedom Fighters]] and the yet to be released [[Kane & Lynch: Dead Men]].

*Many jokes are made throughout, such as at the end of the mission on the River Boat the police chief named in the report is Police Chief Wiggum.

== Controversy ==

Despite the fact Blood Money has been said to be the most violent game of the series yet, the magazine ads for the game generated more controversy. [http://media.gigex.com/editorial/20060524173143-adcritic_hitman_pcgamer_big.jpg The one] that drew the most attention and protest depicted a woman lying on a bed in lingerie, seemingly asleep but with a bullet hole in her forehead. The caption above the picture read: "Beautifully Executed" a pun regarding the woman's appearance and her fate. Other ads were "Classically Executed", featuring a [[Cello|cellist]] with a slit throat; "Coldly Executed", showing a body in a freezer; and "Shockingly Executed", depicting a naked woman in a bath, killed when a toaster was plugged in and placed in the tub.

Complaints were raised regarding the "Beautifully Executed" ad, claiming that the ad condoned sexual violence against women. Advocates, however, praised the artistic quality and dark beauty of the spread.
