He was the grandson of the [[Argentina|Argentine]] general [[Cornelio Saavedra]]. At the age of 15 years he entered the [[Chilean Army]] and joined the revolts of 1851 and 1859. He took office as General Commander of the [[Chilean Navy]] in [[1860]], but left the charge that year. Later he was appointed commander in charge of the [[occupation of the Araucanía]] during its first phase.
