L'idea di organizzare il ''Tribute to the Troops'' venne in mente al wrestler [[John Bradshaw Layfield|John Layfield]], nelmeglio conosciuto come [[2003John Bradshaw Layfield|Bradshaw]], per celebrare il lavoro svolto dalle truppe americane in [[Afghanistan]] ed [[Iraq]].; Ilil primo ''Tribute to the Troops'' fuevento, in realtà, fu una speciale puntata speciale di ''[[WWE SmackDown|SmackDown!]]'' svoltasi il giorno di [[Natale]] del [[2003]] al Camp Victory di [[Baghdad]] ([[Iraq]]). Nel [[2004]] l'evento venne presentato nuovamente come puntata speciale di ''[[WWE SmackDown|SmackDown!]]'', chiamata ''Christmas in Iraq'', ed ebbe luogo al Camp Speicher di [[Tikrit]] ([[Iraq]]).
