Il 7 settembre [[2008]] prende parte a [[WWE Unforgiven#2008|Unforgiven]], uscendo sconfitto da un Unsanctioned Match contro lo stesso Michaels. Nel corso della serata, prende parte a sorpresa anche al [[WWE World Heavyweight Championship|World Heavyweight]] [[Stipulazioni di match di wrestling#Championship Scramble match|Championship Scramble Match]], prendendo il posto del campione [[Phil Brooks|CM Punk]] infortunatosi poco prima dell'inizio del match; Jericho vince il match laureandosi World Heavyweight Champion. Nella puntata di Raw svoltasi la settimana dopo [[WWE Unforgiven#2008|Unforgiven]], Chris Jericho conserva il [[WWE World Heavyweight Championship|World Heavyweight Championship]] battendo [[Phil Brooks|CM Punk]] in uno Steel Cage Match. A [[WWE No Mercy#2008|No Mercy 2008]] Chris Jericho difende con successo il [[WWE World Heavyweight Championship|World Heavyweight Championship]] in un Ladder Match contro [[Michael Hickenbottom|Shawn Michaels]]. Il 26 ottobre [[2008]] perde il [[WWE World Heavyweight Championship|World Heavyweight Championship]] a [[WWE Cyber Sunday#2008|Cyber Sunday 2008]] contro [[Dave Bautista|Batista]]. Ma il lunedì della settimana successiva durante la puntata di Raw #800 lo vince nuovamente in uno [[Steel Cage Match]] sempre contro Batista, per perderlo poi nuovamente alle [[Survivor Series 2008]] contro il rientrante [[John Cena]]. Ad [[WWE Armageddon|Armageddon]] perde la rivincita titolata con John Cena.
