The building was first opened in [[1892]] by Captain Thomas G. Ryman as the Union Gospel Tabernacle. In [[1904]], Captain Ryman died and the building was renamed Ryman Auditorium in his honor. From [[1943]] to [[1974]], the Ryman hosted the [[Grand Ole Opry]] show. After the Opry left, the Ryman sat mostly vacant until [[1994]] when it was restored and reopened as a performance venue and museum.
