The school has a rugby playing tradition winning the Leinster Junior Cup twice however St Michael's has never won the main schools prize, the Leinster Senior Cup (but has lost the final on 3 occasions in 1988 and 1991 to Clongowes Wood College and in 2006 to sister college, Blackrock College)

It recently preformed an adaptation of George Buchners Woyzeck produced by Derrick Devine who has acquired notable fame owing tohisto his time in Aaron Copelands band, EllissonEllison 9, who incidently is also a teacher in the school.
