: The notation doesn't make much sense and seems to have been introduced quite randomly and without references in https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Monad_(functional_programming)&diff=next&oldid=867467071 , along with a few other strange changes by [[user:Zar2gar1]] in the vicinity.
