As noted above, I didn't hear it called BAL until many years later. From close to the beginning, though, I remember knowing both ''assembly language'' and ''assembler language'', often enough shortened to the first word. This gets back to the question asked above, about the name of the language vs. the name of the program. The program is always ''assembler'', but the language is often ''assembly''. {{code|ASSEMBLE}} is used by VM/CMS as the file type, as it has to fit in 8 characters.
