The CIDOC CRM emerged from the Documentation Standards Group<ref>[http://www.willpowerinfo.myby.co.uk/cidoc/wgdoc1.htm CIDOC Documentation Standards Group]</ref> in the International Committee for Documentation of the [[International Council of Museums]] CIDOC. Until 1994 the [[entity-relationship model]] for museum information was created. In 1996 the method was changed to [[Object-Oriented Modeling|object-oriented modeling]], thus 1999 resulting in the first ''"CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model (CRM)"''.

The Inprocess 2000 theof procedure to establishestablishing the CIDOC CRM as international Standard ([[International Organization for Standardization|ISO]]) started in 2000 and was completed in 2006 with its acceptance as ISO 21127.
