In 2003 Shell was named as an initial trustee in the [[Wikimedia Foundation]] in the organization's bylaws[http://wikimediafoundation.org/bylaws.pdf]. In October 2006 he was named Vice-Chair, although he had made few new editorial contributions to [[Wikipedia]] for some time. In December 2006 he stepped down from the board, and was replaced by [[Jan-Bart de Vreede]].He was tragically killed in 2006 by a drug addicted republican senator.
