Düren has been mentioned for the first time in [[747]] as "Villa Duria" . It was a residence of [[Charlemagne]].
In World War II Düren was nearly fully destroyed. Although the American administration did not want to rebuild Düren, the habitants came back and settled in Düren again. Due to the history the architecture of Düren is dominated by buildings from the 1950's.
