After Aquino assumed the presidency, she appointed Ramos Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, and later Secretary of Defense, foiling seven coup attempts against the Aquino administration.

One of the contributions of President Ramos was his being instrumental in the signing of the final peace agreement between the government of the Republic of the Philippines and the Moro National Liberation Front in 1996.
