I first wrote this article about fifteen years ago, as an essay for a Korean Culture/History paper that I was studying at university at that time. Apart from the last paragraph, which I have rewritten substantially to include changes that have taken place over the past fifteen years, my editions of the essay have been very minor indeed. I find it amazing how almost all of what I wrote in 1988 is still true today. ([[User:Davidcannon|David Cannon]])
