Just like almost any programming language, it can be used in any area as long as the correct "bindings" (not sure about the correct terminology, but hopefully you understand what I mean) are there, see the [[JavaScript#Uses_outside_web_pages|Uses outside web pages section in the JavaScript article]] for some examples.
