Line 1:
A role-playing game (RPG) is a game in which each participant assumes the role of either an imaginary character (such as a [[wizard]], [[ogre]] or spaceship captain) or the role of the [[game master]]/referee (usually one per group of players). The characters can interact within the game's imaginary world, which is described by the game master (who plays all entities not taken on by a player).

Actions are usually described verbally, though playing aids such as dice, maps, miniatures or drawings are normally used as well. The game combines open-ended play with elements of drama and storytelling. The main focus is usually on interacting or fighting with [[game master]]-controlled [[non-player character]]s or mosnters.

More popular games include [[Dungeons & Dragons]], one of the early online games, [[BattleTech]], and those based on [[Star Wars]]. The online environments known as [[MUD]] and [[MOO]] include software for playing and developing role-playing games.
