:Non c'è dubbio che gli Arabi abbiano dominato per 2 e passa secoli la Sicilia. Ma dal IX all'XI secolo. È plausibile che abbiano lasciato tracce in un'istituzione che compare assai dopo, in ambiente cristiano e, probabilmente, socio-economiucamente elevato? Con le etimologie si può dir tutto ma attenzione a fare, magari senza volerlo, del bieco anti-islamismo. The word 'Mafia' is the noun form of [[Sicilian language|Sicilian]] adjective "mafiusu" which has its roots in Arabic. Roughly translated it means "beautiful", but can also be translated as "cool". In reference to a man, "mafiusu" in nineteenth-century Sicily was ambiguous, signifying a bully, arrogant but also fearless, enterprising, and proud, according to scholar Diego Gambetta.<ref name="mafiusu">This etymology is based on the books ''Mafioso'' by [[Gaia Servadio]], ''The Sicilian Mafia'' by [[Diego Gambetta]], and ''Cosa Nostra'' by [[John Dickie]] (see books). </ref>
