Holds are principally used to control the opponent, and to advance in points or positioning. Holds may be categorized by their function ([[clinching hold|clinching]], [[pinning hold|pinning]], [[submission hold|submission]]), purpose ([[chokehold]], [[pain compliance hold]], etcetera) or by the motion or body part they use or attack ([[jointlock]], [[armlock]], [[shoulderlock]], [[neck crank]], and so on).
