'''José Manuel Soares''', known as '''Pepe''' (Lisbon, 30 January 1908 - 1930) was a Portuguese footballer. A forward for Belenenses, during his short life and career, he was the best portuguese player of his time.
 
He had his first game for [[Portugal|Portugal National Team]], aged only 19, at 16 March 1927, in a 4-0 win over France, in Lisbon, scoring two goals. He played 14 games for the National Team, scoring 7 goals. He was present and played all the games for Portugal during the Olympic Games football tournament, in Amsterdam, in 1928, this first ever presence of his country in an international competition. Portugal, after winning Chile (4-2) and Yugoslavia (2-1) was, almost unbelievaly, beaten by Egypt (1-2) at the quarter-finals. Egypt, latter, will lost to Italy in the match for the silverbronze medal, by 11-3 !

Tragically, Pepe died soon after, from food poisoning, aged only 22, wen there was still much more to expect from him as a player. His name was given to the Salésias Stadium, in Lisbon, already disappeared, and in tribute to the best portuguese player of his team, like he´s still considered by many, it was madethere´s a statue of him, at the entrance of the [[Belenenses]] Restelo Stadium, in Lisbon.
