Chávez was born on [[July 28]], [[1954]] in the town of [[Sabaneta, Barinas|Sabaneta]], [[Barinas State|Barinas]]. The second son of two schoolteachers, [[Hugo de los Reyes Chávez]] and [[Elena Frías de Chávez]], he is of mixed [[Indigenous peoples of the Americas|Amerindian]], [[Africa]]n, and [[Spanish people|Spanish]] descent, as many other important politicians of Venezuela (former president Romulo Betancourt, governor Andres Velázquez).
Chávez was raised with his five siblings in a thatched palm leaf house near Sabaneta. At an early age, Chávez was sent to Sabaneta with his older brother to live with his paternal grandmother, [[Rosa Inés Chávez]]. There, Chávez pursued hobbies such as painting, singing, and baseball, while also attending elementary school at the Julián Pino School.
