Some strings instruments have [[sympathetic strings]] which are not directly played, but resonate with the main strings. Instruments of this type appear all over the world, from Scandinavia, to India, to Baroque Europe. [[Sympathetic strings]] are not to be confused with [[drone (music)|drone strings]] which may be played directly.
