However, a combination of Jean's new duties and headmistress, her re-emerging Phoenix powers and Scott's temporary merger with the evil mutant [[Apocalypse (comics)|Apocalypse]] drove a wedge between Jean and Scott. [[Emma Frost]] took advantage of this, and initiated an affair with Scott, inadvertently falling in love with him in the process. This led to Scott briefly walking out on both Jean and the X-Men. Upon his return, Magneto once again attacked the X-Men, and killed Phoenix during the process.
