The Others are the mysterious, indigenous inhabitants of the fictional island in the television series Lost. Danielle Rousseau coined the term The Others, which the survivors of Flight 815 have adopted to describe anyone on the island they have not previously met. They habitually kidnap other people on the island, such as Rousseau's infant daughter, Walt, and a number of tail section survivors, and they do not hesitate to kill anyone who gets in their way. The Others have superior physical strength and stamina and do not leave footprints or make any sound when walking, making them completely untraceable.
First Season
In the episode "Solitary," Sayid meets Danielle Rousseau, who tells him that the Others kidnapped her infant child, Alex. Sayid seems inclined to write the story off as the delusions of a woman who has been alone for far too long, until he hears whispering in the jungle.

Later, Hurley discovers that Ethan Rom (whose name is an anagram for "Other Man") was not onboard flight 815, and in the episode "Homecoming," Charlie kills Ethan for kidnapping Claire. It was never ascertained whether Ethan was one of the Others, an associate of Danielle's or a member of another group.

In the season's final episodes, smoke appears on the horizon and Danielle appears to warn the survivors that the Others are coming. Soon after, she kidnaps Claire's son Aaron in the hopes of trading him to the Others in exchange for Alex. When Charlie and Sayid pursue her, they discover her alone at the source of the fire. Charlie is convinced the Others are a figment of Danielle's imagination and that she lit the beacon; however, Sayid doesn't seem sure.

On the raft, Sawyer, Jin, Michael and Walt detect another craft by radar and fire off a flare gun. A small boat responds, crewed by at least four — a captain, two men and a woman — who kidnap Walt and destroy the raft. As with Ethan, it is unknown if the boat crew are Others or part of another group of people from the island — however, Michael's explanation of these events in the "Collision" episode makes it seem that, one way or another, he is certain that the Others are responsible for the kidnapping.

Second Season
When Jin, Michael and Sawyer make contact with the survivors of the tail section of the plane, they mistakenly believe them to be the Others, an error that Ana-Lucia's group seems to have also made about them. The misunderstanding is eventually resolved.

In the episode "...And Found," Jin and Mr. Eko come across a dead body, identified as "Goodwin" by Eko. Shortly thereafter, the two catch a glimpse of their adversaries. For the first time, the Others are briefly shown, but only from the waist down, walking barefoot in almost complete silence. The last of the figures seem to be of a child carrying a teddy bear. The bear is identical to one belonging to one of the two children taken from the tail-section survivors in "The Other 48 Days."

In the episode "Abandoned," Ana-Lucia reveals that the Others took three of her group the first night they were on the island, and nine more two weeks later. Soon after this revelation, the group suddenly notices that one of their members, Cindy, has inexplicably vanished. Immediately, the remaining survivors hear whispering on all sides of them. Meanwhile Shannon is pursuing Walt, or a vision of him, and is fatally shot by Ana-Lucia, who mistook Shannon for one of the Others.

The episode "The Other 48 Days" details the first 48 days of the tail-section survivors. When the three survivors were taken on the first night, the Others also attempted to take Eko; he fought back, killing two of the Others with a rock. They were shoeless and had no identifying details on them, not even tags on their clothes. Two weeks later, the Others made another raid on the survivors' camp, taking nine people (including two children). During this raid, Ana-Lucia succeeded in killing one of the Others, a woman carrying a knife as well as a piece of paper on which is written the names of nine survivors. As the seven remaining survivors regroup, suspicion falls on a man named Nathan; he is quiet about his past, nobody remembers seeing him on the plane, and he was not on the list that Ana found on the body of the woman she killed.

The survivors move inland and Ana digs a deep hole in which she imprisons and starves Nathan, suspecting him of being a spy for the Others. Goodwin later goes to the hole and helps Nathan out of it, before suddenly breaking his neck. Seeing Nathan gone, the survivors believe they have been located and move on. They find a radio in an abandoned bunker labeled with the Dharma Initiative logo and an arrow. Goodwin volunteers to take the radio to higher ground in order to find a signal. Ana insists on accompanying him, and later confronts him when they are alone — she knows he is one of the Others, having seen him originally emerge from the jungle ten minutes after the plane crashed, wearing dry clothes. He realizes that his cover has been blown, and states that the nine survivors that were taken were "good people" — in implied contrast to those remaining. Goodwin also tells Ana-Lucia that the children are in fact not dead, but are "better off now." Once Ana-Lucia hears that the children are alive and in the Others' custody, she tackles Goodwin. In the melee, he falls upon a wooden stake, which impales his torso and kills him. Ana returns to the bunker and tells them they are now safe, not mentioning that Goodwin was an Other. When Bernard tries the radio later, he hears Boone's distress call made from the Beechcraft. Ana dismisses this, thinking that the Others are trying to trick them.

Ethan Rom
In the episode "The Hunting Party," Michael decides to go out again in search of Walt. Jack, Locke, and Sawyer pursue him, because Jack fears what might happen if Michael goes out into the jungle alone. Despite being a good tracker, Locke loses Michael's trail when the sun goes down. Suddenly, the man from the boat at the end of season 1 appears, and tells Jack, Locke, and Sawyer to drop their weapons. He explains that the island belongs to the Others and that they are "allowing" the survivors to live there. Jack says that he believes that the survivors outnumber the Others and that the Others should leave them alone or risk retort. The bearded man then shouts "Light 'em up!" and multiple torches light up around the trio. He then asks for "Alex" to bring out Kate, and claims that he'll kill her if Jack and company don't drop their guns. After he gives Kate back, the Others leave. One connection appears to be established when the leader quotes, "From the dawn of our species, Man has been blessed with curiosity"; he is quoting Alvar Hanso .
Ethan Rom lived among the survivors of Flight 815 until Hurley discovered he was not on the flight manifest. Coincidentally, just as that discovery was made, Ethan kidnaps Charlie and Claire. He tells Jack and Kate that if they follow him, he will kill either Charlie or Claire. Following up on his promise, Ethan hangs Charlie for a tree and leaves him for dead. However, Jack is able to resuscitate Charlie. Several days later, a still pregnant Claire is found and is suffering from amnesia. Ethan returns and demands that Claire be returned to him or he will kill the survivors one by one. Again, Ethan makes good on his promise and kills Scott Jackson. The following day Charlie shoots and kills Ethan.

Mr. Friendly
Mr. Friendly is the spokesperson for The Others. He first appeared to the raft crew with three assailants, who kidnap Walt, shoot Sawyer, and blow up the raft. When Michael goes to rescue Walt, Jack, Locke, and Sawyer follow him and run into Mr. Friendly who has kidnapped Kate and threatens to kill her if Jack doesn't turn around. He claims that Walt is safe and Michael will not find Walt "where he's at". He says that the island is their island and the only reason the Flight 815 survivors are living on it is because they (The Others) let them (the survivors) live on it. Mr. Friendly draws a line in the ground and says if any of the survivors cross that line there is going to be trouble. This prompts Jack to join forces with Ana-Lucia to train an army to attack The Others.

Tail section experience
In the episode "One Of Them," Sayid is contacted by Danielle Rousseau and taken to a hostage she has captured in the jungle. She claims he is "one of them..." and that he should not be trusted. The panicked hostage identifies himself as "Henry Gale". Sayid cuts him free, but after Gale tries to escape, Gale is wounded by Rousseau. Sayid then takes him to Hatch 3 and allows Jack to work on him, though he warns Jack not to unbind Gale's hands. Meanwhile, John Locke and Sayid conspire against Jack (who is convinced that their captive is trustable) to figure out whether or not Gale is one of The Others. Locke changes the combination to the armory, and Sayid locks himself and Gale inside. During the questioning Gale claims he crashed on the north shore of the island in his hot-air balloon roughly four months earlier, with his wife, Jennifer. He says that his wife died of an illness, with symptoms of delusion and fever. Sayid begins to ask more about Gale's past. Gale claims to have been very rich, living on money he earned selling his mining company. But when Sayid asks about his wife and how she was buried, he is soon convinced that Gale is lying, since he is unable to tell him exact details about his wife's death. Sayid explains to Gale that "You would have known how deep, you would have known how many shovelfuls--" referring to his own experience burying his love Shannon. Sayid then begins to beat Gale until Jack comes in to intervene. After this John Locke finds this an opportunity to point out that we are all 'Others', and that the term is relative.
The tail section survivors had many more encounters with The Others before joining the other survivor's camp. Over the first two weeks The Others took 12 tailies, including children siblings Alex and Emma. During the raids Mr. Eko and Ana-Lucia manage to kill three of them. Jin and Eko see Alex and Emma treking through the jungle with The Others, confirming that they are still alive. The tailies move away from the beach because they think it's unsafe. Inland, Ana-Lucia digs a pit, which she throws Nathan in because she suspects he is an Other. Ana-Lucia tells Goodwin, another survivor, that she is going to torture Nathan until he tells her where Alex and Emma are. Upon hearing this, Goodwin kills Nathan to conceal his cover. One day when hiking with Goodwin, Ana-Lucia confronts him about being an Other, and he confirms it. He says that the people they took were taken because they are "good people". Ana-Lucia kills Goodwin.

After encountering the shipwrecked raft crew, the tailies set out for the mid section survivor's camp. Along the way, Cindy, a flight attendant on the plane, disappears. Later that day, Ana-Lucia sees Shannon in the jungle, mistakes her for an Other, and kills her with a handgun.
Biology of the Others
In addition to the Others' superior physical strength, stamina and resistance, the survivors discover that they also do not leave footprints or make any sound when walking, making them completely untraceable.

ExternalHenry linksGale
Rousseau captures Henry Gale in one of her traps and alerts Sayid, who brings Henry to the hatch and interrogates him. Henry claims he's from Minnesota and was riding a hot air balloon that crashed on the island. Sayid does not believe Henry, and tortures him. Gale is currently locked in the hatch's armory.
