Clark entered the world of literature in the summer of 2002 with the release of [[Almasheol]] by [[Jonathan M. Sweet]], a [[horror]] novelist who lives in [[the Missouri Bootheel]]. Sweet, who wrote the story in 1999, didn't know there was actually a town by that name until much later. The small community and the fictious Clark College are mentioned in the collection's fourth story, [["Eve Bade Adam Eat"]].

Clark appeared again the following year in [[Postcards of the Hanging]] and is mentioned or used as the primary setting in many other stories and novels by Sweet.
