Nell'ottobre dell'anno 1646, quando aveva 19 anni, in una lettera al suo anziano tutore Isaac Marcombes, Boyle scrive che egli sta studiando la filosofia della natura secondo i principi del «our new philosophical college» («nostro nuovo collegio filosofico») e chiede quindi che il suo maestro gli invii dei libri che lo farebbero ben accogliere in questo "collegio invisibile" (« which will make you extremely welcome to our Invisible College ». En Nel févriergebbraio 1647,dansin uneuna lettrelettera àa un autresuo amiamico , il ditscrive: « the best on't it that the cornerstones of the Invisible or (asthey term themselves) the Philosophical College, do now and then honour me with their company, [...] men of so capacious and searching spirits, that school-philosophy is but the lowest region of their knowledge ; and yet, though ambitious to lead the way to any generous design, of so humble and teachable a genius, as they disdain not to be directed to the meanest, so he can put plead reason for his opinion ; persons that endeavour to put narrow-mindedness out of contenance, by the practice of so extensive a charity that it reaches unto everything called man, and nothing less than an universal good-will can content it.And indeed they are so apprehensive of the want of good employment, that they take the whole body of mankind to their care».
Nel maggio 1647 scrive ancora dell'Invisible College in una lettera probabilmente destinata a Samuel Hartlib.
